Sf2 game engine seem to be completly worn out, graphics on how they are with the fps how much you get them are completly dated.

While some new additions to the game could be done or improved its not worthed anymore to update it for small stuff while the sales wouldnt go up.

The only solution would be to make a new game engine and there seem to be alot game engines available that far more could be done.

BMS actually did better job updating that old falcon game than TW did from sf1 to sf2.

Welcome and thanks for your opinion.

Being true DX10 SF2 has far greater potential than BMS currently in the graphics department.

BMS has a terrain engine similar in scope to the older SF2 games - however BMS has less resolution and fps potential and the water is not flat in places.

With SF2NA (which I gather you don't have) a new terrain engine was created - but probably didn't turn out as good as TW hoped - but the Sea is pretty spectacular.

SF has potential... no problem with that. While not the latest in visuals, but in functionality it could be the best. But that's right, a major version is needed, not just little fixes.

So this initiative has died?

To be honest, what did you expect?

TK himself has said there is not going to be a SF3....which sounds like to me that there won't be another major engine upgrade of any sort.

As far as I can tell, TK has no interest in bringing in outside content or funding for his games.

People have gone around and around on this and have always ended up in the same place with the same answer:

"What is done is what can be afforded to do."

Does everyone remember wanting a mission editor?  TK said that they blew a bunch of time and money to make one, and hardly anyone bought it.

Or how about SF2:NA with the new terrain, water effects, new damage rules for carriers and cruise missiles, new avionics, and new content?  Remember the state it came out in and how buggy it was?  I suspect he simply ran out of money and put it out just to pay the bills.

Considering that TK has also given tacit approval to modify core files (exe, dll, etc) without distribution of stock files, I would postulate he's done with any major edits to the game engine.  Unless he has something major up his sleeve, I suspect you'll only see new content, not any new engine changes.  So, what are the options?

1) Make any future content compatible with the engine as it stands.

2) Modify the core engine yourself.

3) Move on to something like DCS.

And before anyone makes the dumb statement of 'How hard can making core engine changes be?', you'll note I've asked several times here for anyone who programs core to pipe up...no one has.  Making content is one thing...programming core is quite another.

Now, I've been surprised before (TK's attitude toward core file modification was not what I expected), so I could be reading this wrong, but I think he's done with core changes.

I know this man, he says that having the source code would be great but If not available there are certain things that can be done, specially If we're really interested (If you know what I mean). But such things cost time and time equals money.

Got to say that Mission editor is truly a marvel (and no I didn't request it) - makes it really easy to make realistic YAP style missions and makes modding far easier - sadly i guess most cant be bothered to do that.

gawd even if the source code became available - that would need to be coordinated team effort - just like BMS in fact - dedicated C++ programmers working for years and years and staying friendly during that time.

I agree, the mission editor is great [i did request it] so long as you can be bothered to use it fully to achieve what you want from a particular mission.....

But on the second point, well, I think we have no hope !.

I didnt mean that bms is better in quality or anything like that. What i mean is that BMS made far bigger step to update the game engine than TW did from sf1 to sf2. BMS still looks old but its amasing what they did with such old game engine.

TW is a company and i have to say that i personally was completly disapointed with sf2 progress overall. Beside new terrain(nothing amasing actually) that is available only SF2NA the game is nothing new was more of rippoff to customers. Thats just my opinion, i know many see it different to but they could do it better.

The rendering engine should simply be rewritten at some point or made completly from scratch as for the quality that it offers fps is far from where it should be.

While some think that simply C++ coding could do the thing is wrong. Rendering engine here is at the end and it seems that TW didnt want to go again from zero or completly redo it but i doubt to that source code will be available at any point now, especially as they are still in bussines.

If there are some C++ guys around im sure they would think of rather doing something new, it would be there game afterall to and with game engines like unity or unreal far more can be done with modern standarts and far less work.

Give the SF2 source code to that same community today and in 2024 I'm sure we'd be astounded as to what "SF2.5" could be. However, that's not going to happen. Even with depressed sales TK is still making SOME money off it all, and there's no reason to dump that.

Perhaps if at some future date he sees no sales for any of it for several consecutive months he might consider it, but even then he's worried about people using his work for their own monetary gain. He's still leveraging many of those assets for the mobile products.

SF2 was too big for one man, but TK never wanted to believe that. I think he DOES believe that SF3 would be, so it's not going to happen. I get the impression that TK's #1 trait is independence. He doesn't want investors because it's not much different from his old relationships with publishers.

He wants to do his own thing and make a living doing it. If it doesn't, he changes what he does (mobile) so he can. He's not going to partner with anyone and at this point I can't see a SF3 unless he does. Ergo...
