India-Pakistan Terrian fixes and issues

Recommended Posts

I downloaded the India-Pak terrain a while ago(I was years ago part of the team doing the mod for sfp1 for a bit). The effort on terrain tiles and types is brilliant and shows up great..kudos to the team. However, geograpically the Terrian is unapologetically shambles which is understandable as the team may have been busy with other things. I decided to try and put(as accurately as possible) the Real Life locations of the various cities , targets and airbases together.

Working with the targets.ini and cities.ini was simple enough and the locations did show up correctly, however the tilesets were off along with the map height at those locations so I tried the Terrian editor. Using the "tutorial" that was put together for member lexx_luthor I tried to get the terrain heightmap up and running. However, any attempts to have the tile set show up have failed. Additionally, any attempts to try and level airfield locations based on new coordinates has the game crashing. If the members of the development team have any clues for this I would be very helpful.

Ive changed the map for the terrain and fixed the FLOT as well. I have not yet changed all the airbase markers to show how inaccurate the locations were.

I love playing the game so only want to help.

post-69805-0-67035000-1392233398_thumb.jpg

P.S I will NOT be uploading any of the changes and fixes to the mod unless requested by the team members of the mod or given explict permission by them.

Nice work! I'm re-working the Iran/Iraq map which has the same issues regarding targets and airfields locations. Unfortunately I can't help, because TW's Terrain Editor crashes on my system and I avoid using it. Have you ever tried Gerwin's TFDTool? It might make your job a lot easier when it comes to tiling and leveling the heightmap.

no it won't

a complete rebuild as he's proposing, is best done only the TE. You can manipulate mass amounts of tiles all at once

iirc, centurion-1 is rebuilding the Iran/Iraq already, and is well along in progress

Not a complete rebuild as such. A lot of the terrain is at the right place. Just the cities and airfield that need to be put at the right spot. Unfortunately, the TE isnt quite cooperative so I wa hoping that some help could be sourced to make it happen.

you're also forgetting the massive amount of work re-targeting; moving all the target areas, and their attendant items, BACK to their 'correct' placements within the various 'new' city tiles

Took me months to get it where it is now ....and I'd have thought our Resident Expert that worked on the project would have said something before we released it, as he lives in Mumbai.

so, best to start learning the TE, get it set up properly -and it ain't that hard to do- (follow Gepards' tutorials), and go from there. I'm too far buried to revisit something already finished and released.

I live on the opposite side of the border, and Its nowhere close to accurate in any location. The map image I posted here is basically an overlay over the original map..the geography was spot on.. so all I did was put a political map on top of it. And as you can see by the cities and locales.. nothing matches its Real Life counterparts.

Ive figured the .ini files on the targets and am actually along halfway on them. So Airfields and cities are showing up in their right locations where they should be approx in Real Life. Its the Height map and Texture that Ill need to burn some hours for.

In any case, thanks for the point to Gepards tutorial.. hopefully Ill pick it up and fix this otherwise great piece of work .

Cheers.

Wrench uses accurate aeronautical charts for placement, not simple maps.  Also, as the terrains are two thirds scale, placement is often a subjective matter.

Well, I tried figuring that. However, Here even aeronautical charts would show a bit off. To give you an example.. the distance between PAF Mushaf and PAF Lahore in he game is thrice what it would be in Real Life. Additionally.. PAF Mushaf is Above PAF Lahore in latitude while in the mod it sits all the way below. The map I posted above is basically the SAME map used in the mod except I put the political overlay on it. The geography matches perfectly and it is a very accurate representation in 2/3rd . Its just the locations that are off.

Ive tried following Gepards great tutorial on terrains to the letter T. The Kashmir terrain he shows builds fine. Yet there is not much luck when I try to get the India/Pakistan terrian to load like it does. Any ideas?

Firstly, thanks for your help throughout the last days, I asked way too much questions. So, I am sorry for that lol, just trying to learn. Now, I wonder if there a toturial for making maps as i Didn't find anything in the knowledge base or maybe I missed something, but I looked there many times. I was planning to learn making some tanks or ships/carrier and jets, but I found everything covered even fantasy planes are here. Thanks for that too lol. I found many maps here, but they haven't covered everything yet and from that I understand that they must be taking a huge load of time and they seems to be the hardest. However, if anyone has any link/file for any tutorial for maps making. I would appreciate it. I used to make some maps and mod other games, but I am not really familiar with this game files except ini files as they are pretty simple, but I try to learn lol.

Hello. I have just reinstalled the SF2 and put all addons I have already used. It is all working. However, after I downloaded new terrains (Iraq03 and Libya), my SF2 cannot recognize these maps in Mission Map sections. However, other maps I have used before work. What is the solution, please?

      Caporetto Terrain WW1 V2.0
      *******************************
      INTRODUCTION
The Italian Front during WW1 refers to a series of battles fought between 1915 and 1918 in northern Italy between the armies of Austria-Hungary and Germany against Italy.
Italy hoped that by joining the countries of the Triple Entente against the Central Powers it would gain Cisalpine Tyrol (today's provinces of Trentino and South Tyrol), the Austrian Littoral, northern Dalmatia and some areas of western Carniola.
Italy had hoped to begin the war with a surprise offensive intended to move quickly and capture several Austrian cities.
Well, the war soon bogged down into trench warfare similar to the Western Front fought in France.
The included terrain represents the situation around September/October 1917, just before the battle of Caporetto.
The Battle of Caporetto (also known as the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, the Battle of Kobarid or the Battle of Karfreit) was the greatest defeat in Italian military history. The battle was fought between the Entente and the Central Powers and took place from 24 October to 19 November 1917, near the town of Kobarid (now in north-western Slovenia, then part of the Austrian Littoral). The battle was named after the Italian name of the town (also known as Karfreit in German).
Austro-Hungarian forces, reinforced by German units, were able to break into the Italian front line and rout the Italian forces opposing them. The battle was a demonstration of the effectiveness of the use of stormtroopers and the infiltration tactics developed in part by Oskar von Hutier. The use of poison gas by the Germans also played a key role in the collapse of the Italian Second Army.

With the all that's transpired in Venezuela over the past few months and the arrival of roughly 100 soldiers from the Russian Federation this week, this South American country has grabbed even more of my attention. I was always under the impression that they had an unusual collection of aircraft and were aware that even my countries' RCAF sold them 2nd hand CF-5As at one point. That said, I was surprised to find that their current air force is comprised of Sukhoi Su-30Ms (35) and F-16As (16.) That leads me to think a war of air supremacy between them and any likely adversaries, probably wouldn't be a stowing-fighters-in-revetments engagement that we've seen in some recent Middle East wars. They also have Mil Mi-17 (10) and Eurocopter Cougar (6) helos and  a Boeing 707 tanker.
All the aircraft are currently available for SF2 with the exception of the Cougar helo and I didn't check for the 707. Correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption though, that the Mi-17 is more or less the same helo as the Mi-8M which has already been modded? Unfortunately the terrain doesn't exist - closest to the theater is Central America and coastal Ecuador.  Knowing nothing about how terrains are created for this game, I'm imagining  a country the size of Venezuela (roughly 900-800 miles if your place a rectangle around it) with 3 significant mountain ranges, some deep basins and highly varied coastline would be one heckuva challenge.  Not to mention that some part of Brazil or Columbia containing air bases would have to be created too.  Without any skill to make it happen, I'll just dream about it.  ;)
I'm curious though if any other fans of this game think Venezuela would be an interesting theater to run some SF2 missions in?
[Edit] I hope I'm not coming across as callous or insensitive, with suggesting a theater in which countless civilians are currently suffering. Like the handful of other conflicts raging around the globe, hardly a day goes by where I don't thing about those people - especially the children. But maybe it isn't cool to consider gaming in a theater where events are currently unfolding?
