The Spanish Navy aircraft carriers

Recommended Posts

Just want to share with you a tiny bit of Spanish Navy history.

Spanish navy had 4 carriers during its history, the first one was not a carrier but more a seaplane tender with the hability to deploy observation baloons as well. It was the Dédalo, and it saw combat on the African campaigns.

The second one was a real aircraft carrier, the EX- USS Cabot, it was named Dédalo too, it served with distinction with the Spanish Navy, were it was used as a convoy escort, embarking helicopters for ASW and the Spanish Harriers, the Matadors... On later ages it carried the AV8B too.

The, it came the Príncipe de Asturias. Using the ramp seen on RN carriers it was our flagship for a long time, and on board carried the Av8B, the Plus Harriers with radar, the Seahawks... I love this ship

It was retired some years ago to give place for another "carrier".

The Juan Carlos I. Is not a pure carrier but a amphibious ship capable of deploying troops and providing cover with fixed and rotary wing assets.

The biggest ship deployed by the Spanish Navy marks the future for the Flotilla de Aeronaves, our Air Arm for the fleet.
