B-17/B-24 question about bomb run speed

Recommended Posts

Hey CA!  So I have been playing around with a lot of fun WW2 addons but one thing that I have found that's a little strange is when flying escorts or intercepts on heavy bombers like Flying Fort's or liberators their bomb runs are exceedingly Slllooooowwwww... I just don't think its accurate that a formation of 17's would be Nose high almost at stall speed (like 70knts)  while dropping bombs on targets.  This also makes escort missions VERY LONG as well haha.  This seems to be an issue for any and all SF2 B-17/24's I haven't tried 29's yet.  I love the work done on these great models and not trying to belittle anyone's hard work just trying to make it even better!

I've not seen that behavior with the Korean B-29's - I've not checked the B-17/B-24's.  B-17's normally cruised at around 180 knots, B-24's a little faster.  Do they ingress and then slow down?

Yep they cruise to the target pretty normally, then when they hit the initial point they slow way down usually and bring their nose way up and fly to the target at about 70-75 knots literally on the verge of a stall like a B-17 high alpha pass haha

hmmm...maybe something in the LevelBombAI statements??? No, wait that's only altitude and release intervals.

For grins, do the same test with the stock B-52s or Tu-16s watch their airspeeds. Maybe something can be found in there??? (other than the fact they're easily twice as fast as the Forts and Libs!)

I will keep playing with it Ive tried playing with their cruise and turn speeds that seem to help, I made them a little bit below the cruise speeds of a P-51B while that may not be super realistic at least its more tolerable in a game setting haha

      Hello.
      I have re installed complete SF2 and updated it. After I copied all content StrikeFighters2 (I backed up before), addon planes are not showing up? I can only see stock planes. May someone tell me what to do?

      i have still to figure out how to properly mod my new sf2 install and i am a bit of a dumdum when it comes those issues, i have tried to just mod the base sf2 campaign Burning Sands (1959) to give the mercenary squadron more cash as a start so i can figure out how to start doing the rest.
      i made a flight directory in my saves folder and extracted the missiondata001.cat into it
      i.e. my folder is:
      C:\Users\evil overlord\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\Flight\MissionData001
      and i am trying to edit the campaign1_data.ini to simply add more cash to the merc squadron for now (was trying to add more land units and stuff but i am back to just trying to change one thing and getting that to work so i can later do a custom campaign)
      the options.ini has
      [Mods]
      ModsEnabled=TRUE
      Directory=C:\Users\evil overlord\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2
      Editors=StrikeFighters2
      but for now, nothing changes when i try to start a new merc campaign, any ideas what i am doing wrong?

      Hey admin/admins;
      I would like a clear notification somehow when a file is updated in SF2.  Especially since I had to get lucky to find the Super Hornet package was updated.
      Many thanks!

      View File SF2 Cold War Prop and Flogger FM Tweaks
      Hello SF2 Flyers,
      For the post-WW2 prop. high-performance aircraft, several tweaks have been applied to the data inis, ranging from lift values for wings and wing tips to the engine section, prop. rpms, flight control section, gears section, flaps, also empty weight, inertia values, ceilings, engine sounds, rudder reversal effect fix, aileron/elevator/rudder sensitivity and movement, etc., depending on the type tweaked. Tweaks are not as extensive as for my FE2 work - but I've tried to get them into the "90% realistic enough" category for SF2 since these high-performance types are difficult to precision peg to within a km or two of historical stats., in contrast to the slower-moving FE2 types. Also included with this package are my minor data ini tweaks for several Flogger types, such as the MiG-23 S, early M, ML, P, MLA, late variant "98," and export variants MF and MS.
      Many thanks to the original FM modders for the late prop. types, including Baffmeister, Wrench, Cocas, MontyCZ, Charles of A-Team, Coupi, Paolopanz, and others I may not have mentioned here. The data inis are for SF2 installs only, tested at hard FM settings (no guarantees that the AI can land them nicely, although they fly them just fine). The Me109 G5 and H0 are variants on the stock G10 package provided on CombatAce (to install simply copy the relevant aircraft folders, rename as per my included folders, and drop in the relevant files). P-47 Sprint upgrades are variants on the ETO P-47D Bubbletop model and PTO P-47D Razorback model. Also included with this package are three sounds for a Pratt-Whitney, Centaurus, and Me109 either Benz or Hisso powered (sound works good for both). Links to the relevant aircraft that correspond with these data ini tweaks are located in the included "Read Me" file with the package. Please go through the Read Me for more thorough info. regarding these FM tweaks.
      Version 1.2 of this package includes the P-47N and improves the data inis for the other Jug and Superbolt variants.
      Happy flying,
      Von S
