Enemy Skill Level
Lt. James Cater replied to Spinners's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
My enemy skill levels have been hard from the very start. -
Hey all, I finally got my main comp back working after it being down since September. Since the old Dell really didn't have much in the way of gusto i didn't bother with a ton of downloads and patches. Just WOE, NF1 and 2, and the SEPT2006 patch. So i was wondering if i could do this...Install WOE, Sep2008 update, patchOCT2008, and NF1and 2. If i then transfer campaign and pilot info from my current WOE to the new one, will i be able to keep going? Or will i have to start over?

This is bugging me to the point that i've got to ask. At first it was an uncommon occurence but now it's fully down. For the last few weeks things have been working nicely but in the last 4 days or so i've been getting failures and now i can't fly at all. As bad as things have gotten the game refuses to go to the Main screen unless i use the CD and even then i can't load any campaign. When i do that i get a quarter size black screen( i can see the backgrund on my monitor) and then get the usual M$ have to shut down notice. Anyone knows what the problem is and what can be done about it? If worse gets to worst i'l tranfser the WOE files to my external HD and do a fresh intall.

Thanks for the heads up! I've got it put on my favorites list now.

Been a Dolphins fan since 1975. Ain't no way on Earth can i go for the Steelers!

That's pretty funny to me. I dipped into IL-2 years ago when i was a seriously hardcore Mechwarrior4 Mercenaries gamer (LIGHT BRIGADE FOREVER /LB\ FOREVER LIGHT BRIGADE) but gave it up when i fell on hard times. I actually made the move into WOV FROM Rome Total War. Can't tell you how long i spent on that game. Especially the Barbarians expansion! As a matter of fact, since i replaced the HD on this comp i loaded it just as a test and sure enough, i'm slaughtering Romans once again. If i ever stop procrastinating and replace the HD on my main comp, the Alexander expansion is what i'm going to explore as well as WOI and FE. Right now though, WOE is the center of my gaming world!

While hunting the web about F-105s in flight sims i came upon WOV. The more i researched the better it looked so i ordered it through Amazon. I found SimHQ and the TW site and that led me here. I made a few posts then got delayed big time when i was living on the streets and so could only add a post here or there but nothing really in depth. Since July '08 it's only in the last month and a half that i've taken the basic steps and added Nato Fighters 1 and 2!

Star Wars all the way! Saw it as kid back in '77 and i haven't looked back. The Sith make far more sense than the Jedi and so i've adopted a lot of what i've found into my personal philosophy. I've even been thinking about getting the Sith code tattooed for some time now (Decision made. I'm getting it within the month ). Darth Maul was good, Darth Bane conquers! I've seen a lot of Star Trek through the years and only the more recent stuff that concentrated on the Ferengi and Klingons i enjoyed. Quark rules! BTW i've been to "Star Trek...The Experience" at the Las Vegas Hilton a number of times. For anyone into the genre, it was like being in Trek heaven.

You know how some people are. I think i'm going to download the whole thing to my external HD so i can start it right after i get through with the campaign i'm in at the moment. Thanks to all for the time and effort! -

The sick thing about the lost Hornet was that multiple aircraft had tracked the MIG and had it locked. They were waiting for permission to fire that never came. -
Considering the limitations of the fellow AI pilots which one leads into battle, it's nice sometimes to have everything go your way. As of this writing, i'm doing the '79 campaign in WOE flying an F-15. I've since past my personal best in kills but also have a few in my squadron who are serious aces in thier own right. At this stage, attrition has cut into us, but man have we been responsible for bleeding the Sovs of a whole lot of planes. On an intercept mission a few days ago i scrambled 12 F-15s. As usual, i climbed almost vertically to 25,000ft and headed towards the enemy at full speed guided by Red Crown. The distance to go towards interception was about 70 miles so i wanted to get to them as quick as possible. After a few minutes(felt like an eternity at the time) i made contact and began the affair. The first target i gave to my wingman to engage while i quickly shifted to another. May the massacre begin! You know how we always gripe about the AI here? No worry on that day. It got to the point that perhaps 4-5 times i had MIGs that i was about to shoot at suddenly explode from the fire of my fellows. I actually jumped a few times from the sound ( I use TDK MP-100 headphones) and flash of enemy planes blowing up near me. When there was nothing else to shoot within reasonable range i got everyone together and headed home. Our losses-0. The Enemy-28. Only a single pilot failed to score , some had multiples. One who i thought of as a second rater got 4! Who else has had missions like this? Is it an a rare occurence or can it be duplicated? Was it the aircraft we were flying? I'm curious to hear from others and compare notes.

That's what it looked like to me. We were at about 5000ft when i got one that exploded violently and seemed to veer into his mate. Said mate went down like a load of bricks and hit the ground. About the only other thing i can think of is fragment damage (if that is modeled at all) from the explosion.

A mission which i'm going to start a thread about soon... On an intercept mission in an F-15 i got 11 kills. 3 guns, 5 Aim7, 3 Aim9. 5 with Sparrows you ask? I hit an SU-22 and he collided with his wingman. In all 12 F-15s got 28 of the enemy with no losses in a wild fight! Got a DFC out of that one.

Thats why i so love TW games. I get to do what i've been reading about since i was a kid. Anyone who has been around at the dawn of PC flight sims knows that these games were nothing more than the wildest fantasies back then. To be able to do all this without having to memorize dozens of key combos and sequences is a massive relief. Take armor sims for example... as any ex-Tanker can tell you, there is a whole lot of things have have to be done in perfect step by all four crewman just to put a single round downrange. Anyone want to have to do it all by yourself in a sim? Can you imagine how many buttons and mouse clicks you would have to do? Would you have a satisfying time? I doubt it! Lite sim hell! TW games are simply minimal overelaboration.

As everyone should know... Having superior gear is nice, but no guarantee of success.

Anyone know...

Wow! I've never even gave that a moment's thought. I'm having a similar situation with drop tanks for my F-15 squadron. At the moment we have 8 for 14 aircraft. Good thing recent missions have been nearby. -
The FASA studio closing hit me hard. I'm still dedicated to the MW4 series. Especially Mercenaries, which gave me my introduction to online gaming and being a member of a gaming community.

The really good thing about the AIM-9B is that the Soviets duplicated it for the Atoll. As far as my use of the B goes, i estimate that i have had a kill rate of less than 10%. My opinion of it's use differs from Scouser. Against a fighter sized target moving straight and lever, inside of 2 miles seems to work well. 1.5 to 1.2 miles will usually get you the hit. Be advised, your aircraft should also be either straight and level or in a very shallow angle from 6 low. Once the range gets to a mile either go to guns or manuver to be able to stay at least a 1-1.2 miles behind the target(provided it's still straight and level) If it breaks, good luck on the rest of your fight! I've had greater success with the AIM-7 using boresight, but the envelope is pretty tricky. Much depends on the heading and speed of the target. When firing from 6 o'clock, i prefer to be 500 to 1000ft lower than the target at a range of 3 to 5 miles. With face shots, i've fired from as far as 12 miles with 5 miles being the absolute minimum due to the minimal time you'll have due to your closing speeds. A neat tactic in the case of the latter is to drop the nose and go full burner in order to give yourself sufficient seperation to turn back into the enemy and re-engage.
