Afghanistan Terrain
Gepard posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Has someone an Afghanistan terrain in development? If not i would start to develope one. -
Who is less dangerous for the world? Mrs. Clinton with her designated Sectretary of State Mrs. "*F**k the EU" Nuland or Mr. "lose canone" Donald Trump? I think Trump is less dangerous. Thatswhy my vote.

Ammo types.
Gepard replied to CptHrki's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
In the reality, the tracer need some space in the bullit. It contains less explosives. Thatswhy you normaly use rounds with tracers and without tracers. If i remember correctly the ratio was 3 rounds without tracer and one with tracer. The MiG guns were always loaded with a mix of AP and HE rounds. But i have forgotten in which ratio was used. Perhaps one AP and then two HE, or one AP and one HE? Sorry its to long ago. -
10 Incredible Soviet Fighter Aircraft that never entered service
Gepard replied to MigBuster's topic in Military and General Aviation
One of the problems of the MiG-21 was the air intake. The plane itself could fly much smaller curves, but this ability was limited by the airflow, which the air intake was able to let through. This caused "pompage" in some flight regimes and in very sharp flown curves. (sorry dont know the right english term, pompage means, that not enough air arrives the engine and the engine sucks so much, that the fuselage is moving like breathing, the thrust is decreasing). With the bigger air intake of the Ye-8 the problem was solved. Not with the first prototype, which had similar problems with the air intake, so that the design of the air intake was changed a couple of times. With the last design the air intake was able to solve the pompage problem and the engine got enough air at all circumstances. So the Ye-8 was able to outfly the complete possible flight envelope. The canards (destabilisators) additionally helped to increase the agility too. There was everywhere on a russian forum the description of the official Ye-8 test report, with all shortcomings and advantages. I think i have a copy in my archive. I try to find it. -

Ye-8 was twice as agile as the MiG-21PF. Its very close the the first F-16s. -
One game i miss in the list. It was Flight Simulator Toolkit FST by Domark. It was the first time you could create terrains, planes and flightmodels.

Help! Can't add new Target Area, another Area Overrides (_Targets.ini)
Gepard replied to swambast's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
The radius has something to do how close you must come to the target while flying a recon mission. AFIIK. If a target area does not appear in game has nearly always something to do with a wrong sequence number. after [TargetArea200] must come [TargetArea201] and then [TargetArea202] and so on. Sometimes small typos can cause a sequence break. for instance [TargetArea202 the forgotten ] make the break and the target area does not appear. or you have a [TargetArea20 2] or a [TargetArea 02] or something. Be sure, it is only one little typo, that cause your problem. -

I miss the Ye-8 here. It was a plane that was nearly as agile as a F-16, but 10 years before the F-16 program started. -

I agree with you, WoI Operation Kadesh is a must have for all friends of the WoX series. Its very close to SF2 in many aspects. -

MiG-21bisD german updateprogram (What if) *********************************** ---------------------------------------------------------- I. This mod is written for WoX (a SF2 version will follow later) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ II. History: In January 1991 the Bundesverteidigungsministerium (ministery of defence of the Federal Republic Germany) decided to phase out all MiG-21 which were handed over after the reunification of Germany and scrap them. Two mounth later ingenieurs of the german DASA company (became later part of EADS) wrote a letter of memorandum to the chairmen of their company. In their memo they stated, that an updateprogram for the MiG-21 would be a profitable cashcow for the DASA company. As reasons for their statement they gave some points: 1. Repair and updatefacilities are already existing with the Flugzeugwerft Dresden 2. Skilled personal is available 3. Good connections to eastern Europe contries are given, because a lot of WP MiG's were repaired and overhauled in Dresden in the past. 4. The eastern european states are attempting to leave the zone of influence of the Sovietunion and will try to become closer to the western alliance. 5. The economic situation of the former WP states is so weak, that it is unlikely, that they will be able to purchase modern western equipment in the next decade. What means, that they will use the weapons they already have for a while. 6. The backbone of the fighter fleet of states like Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Romania is still the MiG-21. Its an easy and cheap to operate plane and it is believed, that this plane will held in operational status till the year 2000. Conclusion: For states which are willing to become members of the NATO and still operating the MiG-21 is an offer of a german made MiG-21 update program a welcome gift. It brings the MiG-21 to NATO standard and helps the economic weak states to operate a significant fighter fleet. To support our selling attempts is is neccessary, that the Luftwaffe must operate the updated MiG-21 in significant numbers over a periode of 5 years minimum. In March 1991 the chairmen of the DASA decided to start a MiG-21 update program. Close informal connections to the Bundeskanzleramt and the MOD changed the fate of the MiG-21 in german service. The former east german Jagdgeschwader 8, based in Preschen, was relaunched under the new name "Erprobungsgeschwader 8". As operating aircraft only the MiG-21bis was choosen. In April 1991, the DASA offered 3 update levels for the MiG-21 with the task to improve the combat capabilities of the plane by minimal changes in original design. The project name was MiG-21bisD. The D stands for Deutschland, the german name for Germany. MiG-21bisD1, electronic update. It consist of the replacement of the RP-22 radar with the italian Grifo-7M, the implementation of an avionics container at the tailfin root, which contains an internal jammer SPS-142, a chaff - flare dispenser and parts of the NATO compatible radio equipment. The weapon system was modified to operate Sidewinder missiles, side by side with soviet made weapons. Only the R-3R missile was withdrawn, because the radar was unable to guide this weapon. The first MiG-21bisD1 was ready in November 1991 and entered the german service in spring 1992. In August 1992 the first MiG-21bisD1 was sold to Poland. MiG-21bisD2, agility update. With this update the MiG-21bis got a pair of canards to improve the agility of the plane, an inflight refuel probe, new NATO compatible radio and a new french made IFF system. The radar RP-22 was slightly improved by better computers, so that the range was increased by 10% and the target quisition time reduced by 50%. The weapon system changes consist only of the Sidewinder implementation. The first D2 was completed in December 1991 and entered german service in summer 1992. First costumer was the Czech Republic in spring 1993, followed by Hungary in summer 1993. MiG-21bisD3, full NATO compatibility. This modification included the MiG-21bisD1 avionic update and the D2 agility update. Additionally the plane plane got a new engine. The old R-25-300 was replaced by the RB-199 Mk.105 which was developed for the Tornado ECR. It was ~ 5% stronger than the R-25 and a good piece shorter. The now existing space was used for a bigger internal fuel volume. In Spring 1992 the first MiG-21bisD3 started for maiden flight, but the program came to a temporary stop, when the british company GEC Marconi Avionics offered their Blue Hawk and Blue Vixen radars to the program. In summer 1992 the implementation of the Blue Vixen was finished and in spring 1993 the plane became able to operate the new american AIM-120A AMRAAM missile. The first MiG-21bisD3 entered the german service in November 1993. It proofed as a reliable, capable and cheap to operate aircraft. In 1993 the "Erprobungsgeschwader 8" was renamed in JG75 "Erich Hartmann". It operated the MiG-21bisD3 and a later D4 update till it was replaced by the first Eurofighter Typhoon in 2004. Poland got the D3 in 1995, Romania in 1996. India showed an increased interesse for a licence production of the D3, but when the USA denied the AMRAAM capability India retreated from program and purchased the MiG-21BISON from Russia. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ III. Russia updating the Su-33 with a GPS locator so it can use dumb bombs with great precision.
Gepard replied to Stratos's topic in Military and General Aviation
But they are not using the american GPS System. The russians have their own satelitte based navigation system which is called GLONASS. -
The P version was for PVO only (air defence), while the normal Su-27 was for VVS, the frontline units. I think that "earlier" has not to do with the version, but with the production date.
-
I have asked in a german aviation forum and the specialists gave the answer, that only the first series of Su-27 had green noses. The more advanced later series got white noses.

Using .jpg in 1stGen Games
Gepard replied to Foxtrott's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
First gen sims dont work with jpg. Maybe that it works in WOI Operation Kadesh.Im not sure. To convert a SF2 plane in WoX you must first look, wheter the lod file is displayed in game. If yes, the plane is completly white. If not, no plane is to see, only the armament. In a next step you must convert the jpg files into bmp files. Then you must hexedit the LOD files. look for all entries jpg or dds and replace them with bmp. Save and pray that it work. Und das Ganze nochmals auf Deutsch. WoX Spiele können jpg Dateien nicht verarbeiten. Eine Ausnahme könnte WoI Operation Kadesh sein. Müßte man mal testen. -
Plane Veering Off Runway
Gepard replied to maverickvf142's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Such thing could also caused by terrain, if the runway is not 100% flat. You should check, wheter the plane has this behaviour on all runways, or only at some. If it act at all runways in that way, then something is wrong with FM. -
Is this a true prototype or a mock up?

MiG-21S Fishbed-G for SFP1, WOI, WOE, WOV A WORD BEFORE ************************************ I know, that there is a MiG-21S available already at the download section. It was made by Starfighter. I used it a lot of times, but i had always the feeling, that this bird was to capable, to agile. Additionally it does not 100% looks like the S. Thatswhy i decided to make my own version of the MiG-21S. First of all i used the october2008 patch data.ini, while Starfighters bird based on an older patch. I deleted the periscope at the canopy, the protection blades under the side air intakes and the gun. Then i increased the weight to the correct value and fixed the gunpod position etc. ************************************* HISTORY ************************************* In the mid 60th it became obviesly, that the MiG-21 of the second generation had some weakpoints. First of all was the radar system not capable enough. The range of the plane was to short and the air to ground capability was to weak. To overcome the first weakpoint the MiG designers decided to introduce the new radar system RP-22 Saphir. This radar was originally developed as S-23 for the high agile dogfighter project E-8, which was canceled to favor the swing wing design, which we know today as MiG-23. Because the S-23 was to big for the MiG-21 nose cone it was downsized. Especially the size of the radar antanna was reduced. So the maximum detection range of the system was decreased from 54km to 30km. But this was 50% more the old RP-21 could offer. So the RP-22 Saphir was selected, and the S in MiG-21S was the indicator for the improved radar. To give the MiG-21 longer legs, the designers decided to implement the long backfueltank which was already used at the MiG-21R recon bird. Further the miG-21S got two additionally wet hardpoints under the wings. So the S could carry 3 fuel drop tanks instead 1 as the older versions. With the 2 new weaponstations the air to ground capability of the plane was doubled. The bird now was able to carry 2.000kg of weapons instead 1.000kg as before. On paper the MiG-21S was an excellent and capable bird. But it was not loved by their pilots. It was nearly 1.000kg heavier than a MiG-21F-13 and 500kg heavier than a MiG-21PF, but still had the same engine. So the MiG-21S had lost a lot of the agility of their forrunners and was not more the born dogfighter. ********************************************** MiG-21S for WOE, WOV, WOI, SFP1 credits ********************************************** While making the MiG-21S i used a lot of files made by other modders. Thanks for this files! The plane itself: ~~~~~~~~~~ Model and skin by TK The gunpod ~~~~~~~~ I used the upk-23-250 of the weapon pack to simulate the GP-9 gunpod. It is not 100% correct, but the best available. The Cockpit ~~~~~~~~~ Cockpit by Mago/Paladrian And finally my little share ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I edited the Data file to fit the S. I deleted the periscope, the gun and the protection blades to give this bird the shape of the MiG-21S. I hope that i havent forgotten someone to give the proper credit. ********************************************** INSTALLATION ********************************************** 1. unzip into your aircraft folder The subfolder MiG-21S will be created 2. install Gunpod GP-9 2.1. Put file upk-23-250.lod and upk-23-250.bmp into your Weapons folder 2.2. include following lines into your weapondata.ini make sure to replace XXXX with your correct sequence number [WeaponDataXXXX] TypeName=GP-9 FullName=GP-9 23 mm Gunpod ModelName=upk-23-250 Mass=250.000000 Diameter=0.320000 Length=4.000000 SubsonicDragCoeff=0.220000 SupersonicDragCoeff=0.500000 AttachmentType=WP,SOVIET SpecificStationCode= NationName=SOVIET StartYear=1965 EndYear=2020 Availability=2 BaseQuantity=1 Exported=TRUE ExportStartYear=1967 ExportEndYear=2020 ExportAvailability=2 WeaponDataType=3 GunTypeName=23MM_GSH23 MaxRounds=200 MuzzlePosition=0.000000,1.675000,0.056000 LightPosition=0.000000,1.685000,0.056000 AimDirection=0.000000,1.000000,0.000000 EjectShells=0 2.3. ) open Weaponeditor and click on save Now the GP-9 Gunpod is available.
