  1. I'm not sure about the "checkpoint" issue, but you can manually advance and retard time by hitting ctrl-shift-E and crtl-shift-R. I just tell them to attack (A) and they find something to do. I think it is shift-W to advance to the next waypoint (I remapped mine to just W, since I don't need WEP, so I'm not sure). But you have to be the flight leader to do this. It's a blast, isn't it?! And TrackIR.....amazing!
  2. Well, ask and you shall receive! Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. I've ordered Lewis' book, and also one called Winged Victory by Yeates, as the reviews just looked great. While I'm waiting, I'll start on Rickenbacker's book online. I've looked up all of the ones listed so far. Quite a few seem harder to find/get. But a number are readily available. It seems that Biddles' Way of the Eagle got several votes, so that'll go on the list. I'll probably order No Parachute right away as well. Sounds very good. The Fonck book seems like a must read. And the Parsons book on the Lafayette Escadrille is probably a must have for me as well. Fascinating unit. Voices in Flight is very intriguing, as is the Otto series. The First Air War is at my library, so I'll get that today. And I'll probably get the Udet book if I can find it, since I've been interested in him ever since I saw The Great Waldo Pepper. So, like I said, I have my work cut out for me. If someone can put together a quiz based on those books to start with....or should I just do book reports (new sticky??)? Thanks for all the help! I'm really looking forward to diving in.
  3. The regular guys on MP know more about this than I do, but I think the one of you who has that plane in his aircraft folders needs to remove it while out of the game. You can just move it to another folder temporarily for your MP session and put it back when you're done.
  4. Yeah, that's quite a secret weapon!! The best part though, was t-boning it without even knowing what happened!!
  5. Hey everybody. Thanks for all the suggestions. I see there are a few that crop up a few times, so I'll probably start with those. Cecil Lewis seems to be on many people's top 10 list, and tttiger's endorsement is hard to resist. But, there are several that sound very appealing. Clearly, I have my work cut out for me! I'm looking forward to it, though. I read all of O'Brian's work (20 Aubrey novels and two or three others...I can't remember). I love historical narrative and fiction.
  6. Thanks Gous. I've heard of both of those, and will track them down. BH, I'm interested in narratives of the experience of being a WWI fighter pilot. Not so much analysis or history of development or warfare, but the personal perspectives of participants. I looked for that sticky and couldn't find it among the topics. Maybe it's still over at SOH?
  7. Okay, I'm way behind. I haven't read anything about WWI air combat. From what I hear around here, I'm missing out on quite a lot of interesting reading. So, what are the top one or two or three books to read on WWI air combat? What's the best one to read first, best in terms of rich historical detail, well-written, and a jolly good read?
  8. It was a blast. And that is a great shot, duck, and a great insignia. I'm going to have to learn how to do that.
  9. I think your situation may be the result of the flight dynamics of the tripe. This is a tail-heavy plane. I've flown it a few times in MP, and get the result you describe right as I enter the game sometimes. As for the warp issue, I tested the auto-trim solution last night and that seems to be the cause to me. Without auto-trim, I couldn't ever induce a problem, and with it, problem every time.
  10. Yes, quite a report. It's interesting that it has a score of 80 while pending. It appears there is some lingering suspicion you staged all of this! Maybe it was your belligerent tone!
  11. Oh, I wasn't complaining. Like I said, I can't see the windsock when passing over the field. I LOVE that I can use smoke to detect wind. That's one of the first things that tickled me about this sim. That and how the FM allows me to slip in when I'm coming in high and hot. But I suspect you are easy, UncleAl.
  12. Okay, Ax, I'll try to make it.
  13. Vista 32, E8400 dual core at 3.0, nVidia 9800 GT with 512, 4gb system, sliders: 554454
  14. Actually, I've noticed this for quite some time. I just land by the smoke, and it always seems to be correct, in that I notice my ground speed drop appropriately when turning final. I always just thought that the windsock points to the wind, but the reverse of how it should point, i.e. with the small end pointing into the wind instead of away from the wind. I can hardly ever see that little windsock until I've almost landed anyway! I should start using the zoom key as binoculars, I guess.
  15. Ctrl-Shift-E increases the speed, 2x for each press (so 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x...and if you can fly at 16x, then you da man!), and Ctrl-Shift-R reduces speed by the same proportions. I think this is left over from CFS3 (but never having flown CFS3, I can't be sure!).
  16. Hey Winder, I was curious about this, so I tried to test it myself last night. I will gather up the stuff you ask for this evening and send it. My test flight was the last mission I flew last night. I used to fly warp when I first started playing OFF3, and never had a problem. I haven't flown warp in a long time. But last night on the last mission I flew, I tried warp. I flew a Pup, in clear weather, with manual mixture and set for altitude, and I kept going into warp and then out to see what would happen. It didn't always do it, but sometimes when I came out, I was pointing straight down. I hope you will be able to see this in the files you ask for. Anyway, I just wanted folks to know that it is happening to others (I'm flying 1.26+hotfix). Doesn't matter to me, as I don't fly warp otherwise. I was just curious. And, I use a Saitek Av8r.
  17. OT alert!!!! Which GA community are you terrorizing Baywing? The folks at Friday Harbor put together a petition and banned me completely from the whole international border area! The folks at the marina put out a contract on me, I've heard. And all just because I enjoy an occasional low pass!!! In the Hornet!!!! On TOPIC: TrackIR is the greatest thing since running water. It's better than sliced bread. The electric light and refrigerated air pale in comparison! Flying with it is an amazing immersive experience. I feel as if I am IN the sim world.
  18. Well, I was trying to say that you have the settings correct for seeing damage (which is basically the aircraft resolution at normal). I don't think there's any other "fix." I'm not sure seeing bullet holes happens. I've never seen any. Try taxiing into a neighboring airplane and see if you can damage a wing.
  19. I think Zommoz has it right. I think the issue arises when your claim exceeds what the program thinks you got. It's fine if you claim less, which I have several times, but gives the error if you claim more, which I apparently did once.
  20. Hey Winder, I've flown several missions now after the hotfix and the wingmen all perform great, as they did before the 1.26 patch. Great work. Thanks again.
  21. Nope, I never attempted to remap (figured I wouldn't be using such weapons enough to be worth it), but it looks like Pol did!
  22. It took me a while to figure this one out as well. Hit the backspace key until the rockets are selected, then the enter key fires them.
  23. Them's the settings I have. I don't ever see any bullet holes (but I don't ever really look for those either), but when I'm done with my usual clumsy flying into something (EA, balloon, trees...), I certainly see damage to the wings. I've flown home with the last two feet of my lower left wing gone in the Pup once. Just jagged and mangled spar ends sticking out of the rent fabric. That was fun!
  24. Wow, that was fast. Thanks!
  25. I'm curious, Winder. I've been following the various threads about DM and guns since they started. I have certainly appreciated the dev's interest in scaling the sim for everone's benefit. And I'll echo the oft-repeated refrain of how amazing (truly unheard of in my experience) the support is for this sim. I've got 1.26, but have only flown one mission so far, my first encounter with two-seaters. I play some version of DiD (usually use TAC). But I sure poured a lot of bullets into (or at least in the general direction of) that two-seater without much apparent affect. I noticed pieces flying off. But he sure wasn't "easy"! So, if I keep my settings on hard, and thus 100 Realism, what is different, if anything, from 1.25? Will the AI start shooting as far away as before? Is there improved DM even in the hard settings? In other words, should I experience more variety of plane behavior on shooting them down?
