The "improvement" to the flaps was a Boundry Layer Control system that used air bled from the engine compressor to smooth out the airflow over the flaps at low speeds, thus increasing lift. The same system was installed on the F-8J for the USN. The downside was that by bleeding off air from the compressor, thrust was reduced somewhat.

Image Request
column5 replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Thanks guys, those are all great shots! The one I am looking for is actually a black and white silhouette. Interesting trivia...the aircraft in the art posted by Bibbolicious is the A-7F prototype, which was trialed in the mid 80s but did not go into production. -
There is a classic drawing of the A-7 that is basically a front silhouette with perspective. Those who have seen it will know which one I mean. I have Googled intensely for this image but can't find a copy. If anyone has it, or knows a link, could you post it here please? Thanks!

As several people have pointed out, NF was not designed to work with the weapons pack. It is a standalone enhancement that is designed for people who want to add a lot of depth to their WOE game with just a few mouse clicks. Some people will want more, in which case you will have to dig into the game files and learn how everything works before adding additional mods.

F-4 Phantom II VF-161 Chargers Skin by column5 View File This is a repaint of the stock USNGrey1 skin depicting an F-4 Phantom II of VF-161 "Chargers" as it appeared while deployed on the USS Midway alongside VF-151 during the early 1970s. F-4B VF-96 Fighting Falcons View File *INSERTD 11/20/02* This is a repaint of the stock USNGrey1 skin depicting an F-4J Phantom II of VF-96 "Fighting Falcons" while deployed aboard the USS Constellation in 1972. It is designed to complement the VF-96 "Showtime 100" skin I released earlier so that your entire flight can wear the VF-96 colors without all flying aircraft 100! On the loadout screen, assign yourself the Showtime 100 skin, and assign all fo the other aircraft in your flight this skin. Submitter column5 Submitted 06/24/2004 Category F-4 Phantom II Skins

View File A-4E Super Echo Addon This modification of the stock A-4E represents the first aggressor aircraft used by Top Gun. Essentially a stripped down A-4E with a high performance J52-P-408 engine, the "Super Echo", as it was called, was an extremely capable ACM aircraft. Well, this is what I say in the article: "Note that the CarrierType must remain CVA-63, but the CarrierNumber and UnitName can be changed to whatever you want, so you could use the CVA-63 model to represent any Kitty Hawk class carrier." This is because you are using the CVA-63 model, but you are free to change the Number and Name to reflect whatever Kitty Hawk Class you want to represent.

Run the exe and, when asked, point it to the WOE installation that you want to update. You should install NF and NF2 over a clean WOE installation. -
Climb Out
column5 replied to ezlead's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Under the [AIData] section of the aircraft's data INI, add the following line: MaxPitchForAltitude=30.0 30 degrees is the default, so you'll probably want to drop it to 20 or so and test. You can adjust this parameter in conjunction with "ClimbSpeed=" in the [FlightControl] section until you get the results you are looking for. Remember to use meters per second whenever you set a speed in the data INI. -
Those who are so inclined can get the NATO Fighters Environment Update here: http://www.column5.us/campaigns.shtml Install it over your existing NF1 or NF2 installation. Thanks to Polak and Deuces for their work. In addition to the new sky tiles and clouds, the 0 aircraft bug affecting some squadrons in 1962 and 1968 should be fixed (finally). The main NF2 download has also been updated with the campaign fix, but not the environment update.

Hmmm...not a bad idea to include instructions on how to do it. I'll have to consider that--the only problem is that I've specifically tailored the aircraft included in the pack to the weapons included in the pack. Some weapons and/or loadouts will no doubt be affected. I suppose it shouldn't be a big deal if a person doesn't mid doing a little tweaking to make things work. -

That request I cannot fulfill. These are designed to be stand alone packs not requiring any additional modding. The weapons pack is too large to include, and includes far too many weapons that are irrelevant to the setting. -

The desire for Swedish and Norwegan squadrons is duly noted. ;) I'll see what I can do about adding some in an upcoming pack. Here are the final release notes for NF2.
