First Eagles - WWI and Early Years 1914 - 1920

    1. Airco D.H.5

      The Airco D.H.5 was intended to be an improved version of the D.H.2, combining the power of a forward facing prop with the forward visibility of a pusher. The reverse stagger of the wings was an unusual configuration and the strange appearance of the plane may have contributed to false rumors of its bad performance. Although a slow climber, the D.H.5's strength and maneuverability made it excellent for ground attack and light bombing missions.

      I have included two skins with decal ini's for both British and Australian markings. Both use the letter decals that come with First Eagles, which you can set in the Loadout screen. The British skin allows you to also set the squadron. (The Australians all used a white stripe on the tail instead of squadron markings.) I have included a set of serial numbers which will be applied randomly.

      You can also choose a light bomb load in the Loadout screen.

      Historical Notes
      The serial numbers are fictious, but in the correct range for most D.H.5s.

      Credits
      My thanks to Ojcar for once again making an excellent data file for the D.H.5.
      My thanks also to Nix for providing the realistic sound file for the Le Rhône engine.

      Installation Instructions
      For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "AircoDH5" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. You also need to move the sound file "rhone110bn4nC" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder.

      For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folder named "AircoDH5" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create a new folder named "AircoDH5". Move the folder named "D" from the Airplanes/AircoDH5 folder into the Decals/AircoDH5 folder you just made. You also need to move the sound file "rhone110bn4nC" into the FirstEagles/Sounds folder.

      Airco DH.2
      14 Squadron, RFC (Palestine) 1917

      Obsolete on the Western Front by 1917, this little pusher fighter/scout still filled a useful role fighting the Turks.

      I've changed the insignia (no white surround), fixed up the damaged wing tga and included an alternative DH2_Loading file.

      Full credit to Aladar for this terrific model. With the exception of the main surfaces, I have retained much of the detail of his original skin. When you can't improve on it, don't try.

      Enjoy

      Airco DH.2
      24 Squadron, RFC 1916

      24 Squadron was unusual in that it identified individual aircraft by a pattern of coloured stripes on the outer struts. While only A Flight (red and while) is usually depicted in plates, B Flight (black and white) and C Flight (blue and white) are also represented in this skin set.

      I'm not sure whether this skin will cause problems for older slower computers. There are 8 decals on the struts alone.

      Airco DH.2
      29 Squadron, RFC 1916 (Update)

      This squadron went to France in March 1916 and was the second unit to have the DH.2. It transferred to Nieuport Scouts in March 1917.

      This skin now includes the wheel colours, and individual aircraft marking for the three flights. The upper wings have been darkened and the struts paint the appropriate grey.

      Full credit to Aladar for this terrific model. With the exception of the main surfaces, I have retained much of the detail of his original skin. When you can't improve on it, don't try.

      Well folks, this is my first airplane for the SF engine, and I'm hoping it'll live up to the hopes of the community. It's been alot of fun, and I hope y'all enjoy it.

      Read the Readme.txt please.

      EDIT:

      Thanks to BigBouncer, who posted a great tip for increasing FPS. If you don't want to redownload the file, open up DH2.ini in the readme and change CastShadow=TRUE to Castshadow=FALSE

      It aughta improve the FPS. :)

    8. Airco DH4 - 2 pack

      Although best known in its role as a bomber, the Airco DH4 was intended to be a general purpose airplane and was used for recon and ground support as well. Early versions were powered by a 250hp Eagle engine. Later versions were powered with a 375hp Eagle engine, which made them very effective bombers. The biggest problem with the DH4 was the gas tank placed between the pilot and gunner, which made communication between the two almost impossible.

      I have uploaded two versions of the DH4 - Ojcar has created two FMs for the plane, one with the early 250hp engine, and one with the later 375hp engine.

      Both planes have two skins, a brown and an olive color. Both use the letter decals that come with First Eagles (which you can set in the loadout screen) and a set of serial numbers which will be applied randomly. There are also loadouts for light, medium, and heavy bomb loads. The skins, decals, and loadouts are interchangeable for the two planes.

      The skins are rather generic, I have included my skinning templates for those who wish to make better skins.

      Credits
      My thanks to Ojcar for once again making two excellent data files for the DH4.
      My thanks also to Sinbad for providing a great deal of resource information for this plane.

      Installation Instructions
      The two versions can be installed separately or both together.

      For FE1 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder.

      For FE2 - Unzip the file and move the folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375" into the FirstEagles/Objects/Airplanes folder. Then in the FirstEagles/Objects/Decals folder, create new folders named "AircoDH4_250" and "AircoDH4_375". Move the folders named "D" from the Airplanes/AircoDH4 folders into the corresponding Decals/AircoDH4 folder you just made.

    9. Airco DH9

      The Airco DH9 was introduced early in 1918 as an intended replacement for the DH4. The pilot was seated closer to the gunner in the DH9 and an internal bomb compartment was provided. However, because of the DH9's low performance and unreliable engine, the DH4 remained the better bomber until the DH9a was introduced a few months later. Nevertheless, the DH9 did operate with better success on the Eastern and Palestinian fronts where it faced fewer enemy fighters.

    10. Airco DH9a "Ninak"

      The Airco DH9a, called the "Ninak" ("nine a") was introduced in June 1918 to replace the underpowered DH9. The 400hp Liberty engine required changes to the front of the fuselage, otherwise the plane was pretty much the same as the DH9. Although it was introduced late in the war, the DH9a did see service during the war, and was used extensively afterwards.

      This is a mod from Stary's excellent Ejecting Pilots Beta mod.
      This mod was made by my brother(ezmonee),who is a huge FE2 fan.
      Be sure to read the Readme for install instructions.
      I haven't tested it yet,but it might also work with WW2 and Korea non-ejection seat aircraft.

    12. Airfields for Bombers

      First off this is for First Eagles Gold. But I'm sure it will work with FE2.

      I figured a simple way to use heavy bombers that takeoff from airfields without changing the spacing for fighters.
      What I did was copy a terrain folder (for this example I'll use the Flanders terrain) and renamed it "Flanders_Bombers".
      And then changed the spacing in the "WWI_AIRFIELDS1 .ini" in the new terrain folder.

      Now I can select the new "Flanders_Bombers" in the terrain menu and takeoff with any of the heavy bombers. All the missions are the same and all the same aircraft will appear.

      There is a bit more to do. It's all in the Readme file inside. The new "WWI_AIRFIELDS1.ini" is also included.

      A link is also included in the readme for the heavy bombers if you dont already have them.

      Hope you like this. It's great for bombing missions.

      Enjoy, quack74

    13. Airfields for Large Planes

      This replaces the stock airfield for both FE1 and FE2. The planes are spaced 25 meters apart instead of 15 and arranged in two rows, 10 meters apart. For smaller planes, like the Morane Saulniers, they will seem pretty far apart, but the larger planes, like the Farman F.40 and the Caudron G.4, can now take off without colliding.

      In your Terrain folder, make a backup of your WW1_Airfield1.INI and replace it with mine. It will change all the airfields to the new configuration. All the parked planes and all the other spacing is the same as the stock airfield.

    14. Airships

      Dirigibles were used by both sides on all fronts during World War I. Early in the war, they were used for recon and bombing, but were soon replaced by aircraft. However, because they could stay aloft for long periods, and their ability to hover, airships continued to be used for naval operations, especially for scouting and anti-submarine patrols.

      I have created five different types of airship. They are all identified as "Balloon" and they are all armed with machine guns. Drop them into your Ground Object folder and they will show up over the battlefields for more challenging balloon busting missions. I have included alternate skins for some of them so you can use them for different nations.

      Historical Notes
      The R23 and L32 are relatively accurate models of actual airships. The Type M, Type PL, and Type VZ are more or less generic representations of popular airship types which were used by different nations. I have averaged out the national and manufacturer variations, but the overall size and shape is relatively accurate.

      I have taken liberties with the gondolas and simplified the rigging in order to keep file size down and frame rate up.

      Installation Instructions
      Unzip the file and copy the folders you want into your FirstEagles/Objects/GroundObject folder.

    15. Alb D.I Otto Hohne

      This skin set depicts Albatros D.I D.390/16 of Lt. Otto Hohne with Jasta 2 at Lagnicourt October 1916. Lt. Hohne was credited with six victories from mid September to mid November 1916. He was wounded in January 1917, and then served briefly as the C. O. of Jasta 2 in early 1918. Hohne flew with the Luftwaffe in WWII, attained the rank of GeneralMajor and died in 1969.

      The files attached include hangar and loading screens.

      Thanks to Gambit168 for making his skin set available as a template, to BortdaFarm for the original model, and to Southside Bucky for advice for improvements. I have included a cockpit adaptation of the Albatross D3 model from the First Eagles Expansion pack. The cockpit mod will not work unless you have the expansion pack. If you do not have the expansion pack yet, you can still use this skin. All you need to do is go into the AlbDI.ini file and modify the lines which now look like this:

      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      To look like this

      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      (Yes, these references are supposed to read AlbatrosDII not DI). Alternatively you can download the full cockpit mod from CA.

      The FM by Peter01 is intended for use without the April 08 patch.

      In addition to the skins, there a sound file which was recorded from a running Mercedes engine. If you prefer the original sound, simply change the lines in the data.ini file which refer to “PropLoopMercedes” to “PropLoop”.

      This fileset is complete, and includes everyting necessary to load the BortdaFarm Alb DI. If you have other Alb DI skins, place the skin folder in the AlbDI folder and select it in the loadout screen to fly the skin.

      This skin set is part of a series presented to acknowledge the dedication and continuing hard work of Peter01 who has given us outstanding flight models for so many other aircraft for First Eagles. Without his work, this model and many others would be just pretty pictures.

    16. Alb D.II Erich Kohler

      This skin set depicts Albatros D.II of Jasta 9, flown by Vzfw. Erich Kohler from February to May 1917 at Leffincourt. The serial number D.520/16 is somewhat speculative. It is correct within the series delivered at that time, but the specific number is not known. Vzfw Kohler transferred to Idfieg in May 1917. I find no record of him flying again.

      The files attached include hangar and loading screens (the latter depicting this aircraft). That image appears to display a darker finish, but this is misleading as the nature of the film used darkens the colors.

    17. Alb D.II Jasta 14 White Bird

      This skin set depicts the Albatros D.II flown by an unidentified pilot with Jasta 14 in late 1916 and early 1917. If you can identify the pilot, please let me know. This aircraft was license built by LVG, and carries the LVG logo and camo scheme. The werk number D. 1747/16 is possible (as one source suggests), but not certain as this plane also flew with Jasta 5; perhaps it was reassigned and repainted.

      The camo pattern and colors, personal fuselage markings, lower wing colors and national markings all closely depict the emblems and national insignia of the reference aircraft. All skins, indeed all models, are at best approximations, and my time machine is still not operational. This skin set uses an unusual number of decals to obtain appropriate texture and color; consequently the bmps do not show up in the form normally expected on the model.

      The files attached include loading and hangar screens.

    18. Alb D.II Jasta 5 Default Skin Set

      This is a default skin set depicting the Albatros D.II as flown by Jasta 5 in 1916 and early 1917.

      The skins will generate random aircraft identification letters and numbers on the fuselage sides and lower wings as well as werk numbers D.XXX on the vertical stabilizer. The letters and numbers are all authentic, but it was not possible to co-ordinate the two in large part because the squadron often changed the identification number/letters for the same aircraft, e.g. D.1799/16 carried both A and D as identification letters at different times. Nevertheless, the werk numbers are those of aircraft which actually flew in Jasta 5 during this period. Occasionally you will see an aircraft without any ID, as sometimes occurred.

      The camo pattern and colors, personal fuselage markings, lower wing colors and national markings all closely depict the emblems and national insignia of the reference aircraft. To the extent possible the skins are based on photographs and reliable research sources, particularly Dan San-Abbot. There were variants of the camo markings in Jasta 5 during this period, most notably with differing colors for aircraft made by three different manufacturers (Albatros, LVG and OAW) and even for the rudder and vertical stabilizer as made by a single company as a result of field modifications. I chose the version which I felt looked best.

      Even in 1917, some of the Jasta 5 aircraft still carried the 1916 style national markings, with a full white square surrounding the black crosses, rather than the narrow white surrounds; this set uses wide 1917 style bright white surrounds.

      In response to requests, I have included variations of the national markings used in testing. If you prefer a “smudged” look for the white surrounds on the black crosses, simply edit the decal.ini entries which look like this:

      All skins, indeed all models, are at best approximations, and the replacement parts for my time machine still have not been delivered. Consequently this work probably includes some material which is not authentic, as well as some which is.

      The files attached include loading and hangar screens.

      Thanks to Gambit168 for making his skin set available as a template, and to BortdaFarm for the original model. Thanks also to Southside Bucky for comments and advice on the beta versions which improved earlier versions.

      I have included a cockpit adaptation of the Albatross D3 model from the First Eagles Expansion pack. The cockpit mod will not work unless you have the expansion pack. If you do not have the expansion pack yet, you can still use this skin. All you need to do is go into the AlbDII.ini file and modify the lines which now look like this:

      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      To look like this

      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      As usual, place the skin folder in the AlbDII folder. Jasta 5 should then appear as the default skin set.

      This skin set is part of a series presented to acknowledge the dedication and continuing hard work of Peter01 who has given us outstanding flight models for so many other aircraft for First Eagles. Without his work, this model and many others would be just pretty pictures.

    19. Alb D.II Li Karl Schafer Kasta 11

      This skin set depicts the Albatros D.II 1724/16 flown by Lt. Karl Emil Schafer, with Kasta 11 in late 1916 and early 1917.

      The camo pattern and colors, personal fuselage markings, lower wing colors and national markings all closely depict the emblems and national insignia of the reference aircraft. All skins, indeed all models, are at best approximations, and my time machine is still not operational.

      The files attached include loading and hangar screens.

      Thanks to Gambit168 for making his skinset available as a template, and to BortdaFarm for the original model. This revision of the earlier release is updated thanks to advice for improvements from Southside Bucky. I have included a cockpit adaptation of the Albatross D3 model from the First Eagles Expansion pack. The cockpit mod will not work unless you have the expansion pack. 20. Alb D.II Max Bohme Jasta 5

      This skin set depicts the Albatros D.II D.910/16 (OAW) flown by Lt. Max Bohme with Jasta 5 in late 1916 until 3 March 1917, when it was shot down and taken into Allied hands. This aircraft was made under license by OAW, and the camo differs from the Albatros and LVG built aircraft. There is a relatively good photographic record of this aircraft, particularly the fuselage, but questions remain regarding some details. The files attached include loading and hangar screens.

      The personal fuselage markings, wing and fuselage colors and national markings all closely depict the reference aircraft. There are several known flaws: (1) the prop displays as metal, rather than wood; changing that would also have required wood struts but the original struts were grey painted, since we see those more than the prop before it spins, the choice was easy; (2) the cowl is brighter and more “metallic” than I would prefer, but limitations in the original skin do not permit a more subdued display; (3) there are certain variations and gaps in the colors, again forced by the form and fit of the original bitmaps. There may be others. All skins, indeed all models are at best approximations, and despite extensive reprogramming, my time machine still fails to boot up properly.

      Thanks to Gambit168 for making his skin available as a template, to BortdaFarm for the original model and to Southside Bucky for constructive and timely advice for improvements of earlier versions.

      An adaptation of the Albatross D3 cockpit from the First Eagles Expansion pack is included. The cockpit mod will not work unless you have the expansion pack. If you do not have the expansion pack yet, you can still use this skin with the original. All you need to do is go into the AlbDII.ini file and modify the lines which now look like this:

      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      To look like this

      CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosDII_cockpit.ini
      //CockpitDataFile=AlbatrosD3_cockpit.ini

      Alternatively you can download the cockpit mod from CA.

      In response to requests, I have included alternative national markings. This version has a bright white surround around the national markings. If you prefer a “smudged” darker white surround, edit the decal.ini entries from INSIGNIA006T to read INSIGNIA006.

      The FM was done by Peter01 and is intended for use without the April 08 patch.

      In addition to the skins, there a sound file which was recorded from a running Mercedes engine to be dropped into your Sounds folder. If you prefer the original sound, simply change the lines in the data.ini file which refer to “PropLoopMercedes” to “PropLoop”. That is the only change I made to the FM.
      As usual, place the skin folder in the AlbDII folder and select it in the loadout screen to fly the skin.

      The September 15 update changes only the decal set. The earlier version runs AOK as White 8 but included files which corrupted the decals used with the Jasta 5 default set. Of course these are intended to be used together. A separate download of just the decal set will be posted for those who do not want to DL the entire file set. Sorry about that!

    21. Alb D.IIL Otto Gerbig

      This skin set depicts Albatros D.II D.1782/16 of Vizefeldwebel Otto Gerbig (NOT Herbig) of Jasta 14. This is one of the later versions of the D.II, with the central wing mounted radiator. Some believe that this plane was refitted with the wing radiator, after initially flying with the Windhoff “Elephant Ears.” Gerbig was credited with four victories before he was mortally wounded near Passchendale on 18 August 1917.

    22. Alb D.IIL Rudolph Weckbrodt Jasta 26

      This skin set depicts Albatros D.II D.1777/16 of Vizefeldwebel Rudolf Weckbrodt with Jasta 26. The serial number is correct within the range of aircraft delivered, but speculative. If you can identify it more precisely, please let me know.

      Weckbrodt was credited with two victories before he was shot down on 14 Oct 1917 while flying an Alb D.V with Jasta 26. This is one of the later versions of the D.II with the central wing mounted radiator. The D.IIL designation is used in the game, but was not used in 1917 by the Germans.

      This skin set depicts Albatros D.II D.1729/16 which was flown with Jasta 19 by a pilot named Scheller, first name unknown. Scheller was credited with four victories, which makes his partial identification a bit more interesting. If you have more information about this plane or pilot, pleease let me know.

    25. Alb DI Prince Friedrich Carl

      This skin set depicts the Albatros D.I flown by Prince Friedrich Carl of Prussia when he was forced down on March 21, 1917; he died of wounds suffered attempting to reach the German lines. There is no doubt (because von Tutchek described it) that the fuselage was painted light green. Some suggest that the field on the fuselage emblem might be red, but it seems to me the better evidence is that the field was black. An additional emblem was on the spinner, but I have not found a way to mount that, given the skin of this model. It would be impossible to see in the air, unless the prop was stopped! The serial number of this plane was painted over and is not known.

      The files attached include hangar and loading screens.
