The glide slope of the space shuttle. Really just a controlled free fall before popping a chute. If the wind isn't gusting, probably safer than jumping out of a plane. I went hang gliding once in California. Again, safety is subject to the wind. But you can stay up as long as you want if you are good at finding thermals. It is true flight rather than a controlled descent. My launch consisted of running down the slope of a mountainside at 5,000 feet until the ground dropped away. Peak altitude was 7,000 ft above the desert floor.

Yes, that's what flying well is all about. I don't know anything about that, but if you catch a thermal like vultures do, maybe, for those who are brave enough, it doesn't hurt to dream.

I used to love sky diving, didn't used to be a weekend that went by that I didn't find myself jumping out of a caravan somewhere. Did my first wingsuit flight when I was 22 in Lillo Spain with a bunch of gassed up Germans and two Scottish guys that kept us in stitches the entire time. One of the best times I've had in Europe, though admittedly I remember what I was doing before drinking with those Scotts and not so much what happened afterwards. This also explains my overnight stay courtesy of Police de Tarbes France, in one of their finest establishments.
