Burma Air War WIP

Recommended Posts

"Terrain objects, scenery" Those truck are perfect Geezer (yes I got the email, just forgot to respond!) Those are actual building in the back, yes? Given a skin they could replace some of the tents are Runway3, or other buildings around the other fields.

Lowpoly or not, given a re-used data ini from the any of the Zils or M35, they'd be showing up in Armed Recon. As long as set to "TRANSPORT"

Two more shots below of WIP airfield buildings. These are relatively easy to make - fun too!

Can the mod community give me an idea of what kind of buildings, hangars, hootches, factories, etc would be useful for the various PTO mods? As I've explained before, I am new to the non-First Eagles sims and I don't yet have a good feel for what might be needed. Suggestions are welcome.

While I have drastically simplified the new trucks, they still have some details - such as suspension components - that probably aren't necessary. I looked in the knowledge base, but there isn't any info about ground objects. For instance, where do I locate the center/pivot point for a truck so it will move correctly? Can anyone send me to a site with the necessary info?

geezer, those are fantastic :shok:

Sorry, can't help with the pivot question. You may want to head over to capun's forum and ask him. Unless anyone round here can help?

Below is an example of what I am trying to get a feel for. Several of the WW1 flight sims have extensively modded the airfields to improve the atmosphere when starting or ending a mission. The idea being that new trucks, buildings, etc aren't just a collection of new targets but add to the immersion of a mission.

THATs the fuel bowser I've been needing!!!

And that net covering the revietment -- dude, that seriously cool!

Geezer, there's a lot of PTO items that Polak has imported and coverted from CFS2, originally done by AF Midway Group. I've been using QUITE a lot of them. I haven't looked, but he had a link over at SimHQ in the 3rdWire forums

Here's the pic that came with the pack:

Now, I've found that some of them don't work; as in they don't show up or have other issue - the small bridges (tried in Burma -never appeared at Sittang River), one of the large pillboxs/trench(the green one) - you crash into it at 10000 feet!!

The 2 tents show up in the Libya map, repainted and hex edited for the desert, thereby creating 2 NEW tents.

The 'depot buildings' show up all over Burma, at the myriad of train stations. They look VERY cool!!

These are what I used on the New Gueina and Burma; more will show up in China. At some point, I should go back and add some of these items to the Solomons map, too. Eventually...

Perhaps I should send him an email, see if they could be uploaded. Otherwise, the ones used will just appear in various terrains.

Most of those look perfectly usable, though there may be a need for more realistic airfield stuff? After consulting a bunch of old photos, it seems that many airfields in China and Burma should look a bit more improvised - more quick and dirty construction using boards and corrugated roofs. Also, it sounds like you could use a "Bridge On The River Kwai" bridge?

Also, for tropical locations it looks like there is a need for REALLY improvised structures with palm frond roofs?

We Chinese sim pilots are looking forward to smash the Jap invaders in these great planes!

I have learned the hard way why many model aircraft, vehicles, etc sometimes have subtle distortions. Shot below shows the Curtiss Hawk II that I have been making using data and drawings DL-ed from the internet. I also ordered a good dead-tree reference that FINALLY came in the mail, and was I surprised when I looked at the high quality 3-view drawing! The model must be extensively modified to be accurate.

i think it will help you

Yes, it did. The Curtiss Hawk used two different wheel/fairing sizes - the US Navy mostly used the large wheels, so that is what most drawings show. However, the website above shows that Chinese Hawks used small wheels. Thank you!

Got some more work done - the overall configuration now matches the more accurate drawing. The drawing shows the US Navy version and I am now checking photos to identify the differences between the export versions and the US Navy version.

So will you be making multiple versions?

Hmm.....that never occurred to me!

No reason why not, though the different wheels/spats and tailwheel/rudder used by the US Navy would require a new model and new texture maps. Lemme think about that - maybe using multi sub-objects in Max will allow me to just make one model? Will get back to you.

Go ahead, make my day, punk!

Things are about to get ugly on the Sino-Japanese front:-

Work continues on Burma Air War campaign, although these Chinese infantry will probably come in handy for scrapper's Flying Tigers China campaign as well

Cheers for now,

Well, it made me laugh

Here's something a bit more serious - finished the decalling (is that a verb?) for 67 Sqdn's Buffaloes. Here we have RD-B W8143, whose pilot showed remarkable calm in attacking the raid of 87 Ki-21 bombers escorted by 30 Ki-27 fighters which attacked Rangoon and its airfields on 23 December 1941. They were met by 12 P-40s of 3rd Sqdn AVG and 15 of 67 Sqdn's Buffaloes. Thanks to Hakans Aviation page on the Sino-Japanese war for this story:-

"Sergeant C. V. Bargh claimed one probable Ki-27 but had his aircraft (W8143 “B”) shot full of holes; he managed to evade his attackers and flew out to sea, there regaining height. His windscreen was covered in oil so he calmly removed his flyingboot, opened the cockpit and wiped the screen clean with his sock before continuing his search for the bombers."

OK, I think I'll have to edit my CBI instant action to recreate that raid, but where's the button for "wipe windscreen with sock" ???:blink:

DUDE!!! You stole my idea for the Chinese Infantry!!! Nicely done!!!

Here's a couple more CAF birds:

I-152

caf_i-152.jpg

I-153

caf_i-153.jpg

Had a hell of a time trying to make the fabric lines. But they're much better looking then using the 'texture' button, and 'canvas' effect. Not perfect, but better. New skins, from a newly created template.

Speaking of you Buffs, I just came across "Buffaloes Over Singapore" today, whilst looking for books on the I series biplanes. We already have 60 Sqdn's skin for the Blenheims (it's stock, I think)...too bad we don't have Malaya on the maps.

The CAF P-43 is nearly ready, but I've having some issues with it's ground handling abilities.

Also, does anyone have a source for CAF serial numbers? I mean the "P-xxxx" as seen on the tails? Mostly for the 152/153. Lancer serials would be plus...

And the map still needs some more minor upgrades (read: eye candy). Hopefuly, done soon.

Nice stuff!

Ah, the joys of hexediting

Was scratching my head a bit over that one for a while (insisting on carrying a japanese flag, no matter what  ) but got it sussed now

Nice work there on the CAF skins, I must admit I've not really looked at their stuff much, but now you've got me going down this CBI not the same as PTO line, I'm having to flesh out that install :wink:

Have been slowly working through Brian Cull's books, a great source of detailed info. Blenheims are next up for the decalling treatment in BAW campaign - getting there, slowly.

Be nice to have, but sadly I can't help with FMs. Stuck my head under the hood of the 109 while working on BoB campaign - head still hurts, and couldn't get anywhere with it

More map upgrades, excellent  You are the man :good:

Seriously though, where do you find the time?

Iceland has been idling on my HD for weeks, with quite a few other things I haven't even looked at in ages. Frustrating, as things are at the stage when I'm actually getting able to do stuff (TE is always a joy  ) - but always, where to find the time?

Ah well, onwards to victory

Something for the merry band of WW2 propheads - happily growing in number, it would appear  :good:

I am hauling this thread up from the vaults to announce that Burma Air War is a WIP no longer. Coming soon to a combatace near you:-

post-16914-1244162117_thumb.jpg

Uploaded and awaiting approval in the CA campaign section

EDIT: Now available right here at CA

http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=9133

What you get:

Campaign covering the air war in Burma from Dec '41 to May '42.

Flyable squadrons for RAF, AVG, IJAAF and a lonely USAAF bomber squadron who made it to Burma in time to start ferrying the wounded back into India.

New ETO and PTO Hurricane and Blenheim skins, and a stack of RAF decals to cover the squadrons in the theatre. With many thanks to Wrench for his superlative new Hurri templates, cheers mate :good:

Re-decalling of Gramps' Buffalo skin to create 67 Squadron RAF, complete with authentic serial numbers for the squadron.

Nation-specific WW2 Chinese Infantry, modded from Kesselbrut's WW2 infantry.

A major upgrade of Edward's WW2 Burma terrain, building on the work done already by Wrench in that regard.

Stacks of new historical airbases, many completely new target areas, new rivers, new planning maps, new terrain .HFD and .TFD files to accomodate all the new stuff.

Revised movement, nations, targets and types .ini terrain files to achieve, so far as possible, a historical campaign progression. In other words, the Allies are going to get their butts kicked in this one. Try flying a 67 Sqdn Buffalo campaign and see what I mean

Any comments, feedback, suggestions and gripes are most welcome.

Tally-ho chaps!

Slainthe!

Will this work in SF2?

Sorry, I can't help with that as I have not yet taken the plunge into SF2, although I don't see why not.

A major problem is that all the WW2 prop FMs need a thorough overhaul to work in the Oct 08 (or later) build of TK's engine.

That's why I specify that this campaign is for SFP1/WoV/WoE patched up to v 083006 level only.

There is a bit of a resurgence of interest in the WW2 stuff, so hopefully we will see some updated FMs before long.

Toodle-pip for now (North Africa is next on the hit-list )
