ironroad Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 wonder what it would be like to have a lifting body fighter The F-14
THEJETDEMON Posted December 11, 2008 Author Posted December 11, 2008 (edited) though you have a point I came up with the XF-24A *evil genius laugh* Edited December 11, 2008 by THEJETDEMON
charlielima Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Looks cool already. Probably not very maneuverable. Meet you halfway? CL
zmatt Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Lifting bodies aren't very stable, so I doubt they would make good fighters. Also the x-24 was rocket powered so its radius was limited to something like 50 miles. You would have to make major modifications to make it practical. And I don't mean strapping sidewinders on it :P

THEJETDEMON Posted December 11, 2008 Author Posted December 11, 2008 (edited) i have a design drawn up and ill probably scan it in TMW probably could make it into a sim jet for flight simulators Edited December 11, 2008 by THEJETDEMON
+Julhelm Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 You could design it with retracting wings like the Rockwell Surprise Fighter.
THEJETDEMON Posted December 11, 2008 Author Posted December 11, 2008 You could design it with retracting wings like the Rockwell Surprise Fighter. il think about it
THEJETDEMON Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) here it is, this design is stable and works because i built a paper 3D model and it flies perfectly. Edited December 12, 2008 by THEJETDEMON
THEJETDEMON Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) photos of the craft, i hope to get a test flight video soon, though it works phenomenally the photos are fuzzy Edited December 12, 2008 by THEJETDEMON
charlielima Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) Huh. It's a Disphenoid with a fan tail. A skinny flying wing.I notice with flying wings and the new UCAVs there is not a defined point where the fuselage ends and the wings start. CL Edited December 12, 2008 by charlielima

+Zurawski Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Wasen't there a big bad-ass what-if bird someone made for the MSFS series that was "supposed to be converted oveer to the thirwire engine at one time that looked like that elongated diamond-shaped one?

TX3RN0BILL Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 (edited) Whoa... that looks like a Micromachine Executor Super Star Destroyer!!! Or almost... would be a cool "what-if" fighter to have for SF/WoV/WoE... Edited December 16, 2008 by TX3RN0BILL

Gunrunner Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Lifting bodies aren't very stable, so I doubt they would make good fighters. A refresher just in case you lost the plot of the last 30 years in fighter planes technology... Quite a few major air superiority/interception planes designed these last 30 years have been naturally unstable on purpose (F-16, F-18, F-22, Mirage 2000, Rafale, Gripen, Typhoon, MiG-29, Su-27) as a way to increase manoeuvrability. Fly-by-wire being most of the time what stands between a plane actually doing what the pilot wants and actually doing exactly the opposite, or just crashing to the ground in interesting ways.

i90807065 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 (edited) Lets see: 1) Super Destroyer-think nimitz carrier multiplied by the largest destroyer 2) CFA-44 3) Terrains-couldnt get em started 4) Yellow SQN skins 5) Mobius skin-still WIP 6) Taro8's F-15-hopefullly will be able to that soon 7) Aigaion 8) Aurora (high altitude spy-bomber) 9) Arkbird 10) X-31 11) XF-22 12) XF-18 13) ADFX-02 14) "Classified"-This isnt even completely thought up yet, but know itll give Aim-120s a hard time As for 14, ill have a design soon, i guess technically i cant say they all didnt end well... charlielima Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 (edited) I was going to get in the frey with Maneuverability vs Stability. High wing loading vs low wingloading but I thought this would be more interesting: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/x-39.htm Check it out. I'm trying to figure out the difference between a narrow flying wing and a wide lifting body, (not the ones in a gym) but I think the UCAVs are where the concept is applied for real. widening the body gives more space for weps. I think every body wants more Weps. CL Edited December 19, 2008 by charlielima
Rambler 1-1 Posted December 20, 2008 Posted December 20, 2008 The only problem I can think of about a lifting body fighter is that it would be very difficult for it to hold Gs unless you were at a very high speed. Otherwise the thing would just pile on the AOA instead of actually turning on the lift vector.
