That regime is on the verge of collapsing since the mid-90's and only hold on because it's in China's interest... and all of its neighbours interest: -China does not want an unified Korea where, probably, US troops will be stationned in the Norh. -South Korea does not want to pay. -Japan fears a too powerfull unified Korea -The US need North Korea to maintain troops in RoK, as an unification might trigger an evacuation of the troops. Well, everybody that counts there is in favor of the Statu-quo... So is North Korea: they want to survive, and their paranoia is alievated with their new nuclear insurance. Now, they will resume their heavy-shouting and black-mailing based diplomacy. excellent summation. meanwhile, the captive population, enslaved in the Socialist Workers Peoples Paradise will continue to starve to death. In July 2002 a quite big naval battle occured between RoK and DPRK navies with several losses of ships and lives. And I'm quite sure other severe clashes occured more recently in the contested waters. But there were no all-out war, despite all the usual KCNA (http://www.kcna.co.jp/index-e.htm) warmongering and violent rhetoric. North Korea knows she can't afford a war she will probably loose. Hence the nukes, as an insurance: nukes means no all-out war or foreign interventions, as India and Pakistan experimented in their recent clashes, as Iran is trying to achieve, as Libya and Iraq tried. And the nuke is perfect for Kim Jon Il way of diplomacy: blackmail. I would personnaly prefer the destruction of DPRK's regime but with the nuke and China's support, military/'special" solutions are now impossible. An Ozirak reenactement is impossible now that the possession of nukes is certain: I guess nobody knows how much warhead DPRK has. One? Two? Ten? Or did they fire the only one? There is the risk that if such an attack occurs, they will put their one, two or ten warheads in missiles and fire them toward Japan and RoK... It would be a suicide for them as the US will probably destroy that country a few minutes later, but they could take an unacceptable toll on Japan and South Korea's assests/lives. That's called dissuasion... But I'm sure, despite the climate of purges and terror that must be reigning in Pyongyang that the Party and the Army are not so monolithic and perhaps some inner coup or palace revolution could be incitated. It was what happened in Romania in 1989: Ceaucescu indeed followed North Korea's model, and his grip to power was seen as unchallengable. In a few days, he was ousted and killed by something that was a palace revolution by pragmatic Party's members (with links in Moscow and in the West) disguised as a popular revolt. We should just arbitrarily blow up the most heavily anti-aircraft defended military target in pyongyang with 1 F-22. When they realize we can kill them without them ever seeing us, they'll shut up and sit in their corner like they do after they usually got their regular aid check. In the Ethiopian-Erythrean war of 1998-200, its records were awfully bad. The only way for DPRK Air Force to be a threat is numerical superiority and engaging in dogfights.
