coolpilot Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Did the F-4E´s used in Operation desert storm had updated avionics (HUD, internal jammer, countermeasures, etc.)? If so, could someone send me some pics of the HUD, please? I plan to make an avionics update for the F-4E but I can´t find any photos. Any help appreciated. Quote

I have heard things about a few F-4Es flying over Northern Iraq from Turkey, not sure. By 1988-89 most of the F-4Es had been replaced by F-16s, even in the ANG and Reserves. Quote
coolpilot Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 Thanks AOCbravo. Do you mean RF-4s and F-4Gs? I meant F-4E´s but I knew there were very few of them. Quote
+Southernap Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 The only USAF unit that was still flying F-4E's around the time of Desert Storm was the 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were home based at Clark AFB in the Republic of the Philippines Islands. This would of been the last unit to convert to either the F-16 or the F-15 at the time, however the change was canceled because of closing of Clark AFB. The 3rd TFS did not deploy to the Saudi Peninsula. As part of our coalition partners the Turkish AF and Egyptian AF did deploy to the region and they both did fly F-4E's at the time. However, I don't believe they deployed F-4E's near the active combat zones. Instead most of their support came from flying helicopters and transport aircraft. Quote
+Dave Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Yes the F-4E's did fly combat missions in Desert Storm. They were the 3rd TFW out of the Philippines. They also provided escorts for some of the RF-4C missions. By the time of Desert Storm in January 1991, almost all of the F-4Es had been withdrawn from active duty USAF units, having been passed along to foreign customers or placed in storage. Nevertheless, a handful of Pave Tack capable F-4Es flew with the 7440th Composite Wing based at Incirlik AFB in Turkey, operating against targets in northwestern Iraq. Quote
+Southernap Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 My bad. I thought that none of the Clark AFB units deployed to the Pennusila during the Gulf War. Quote

A USAF F-4E with all the bells and whisles? Go for it Bro!! Quote
+aleks Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 well, from what i saw in the past, at least 28 f4e were delivered from ANG to hellenic air force. the planes presented some extra features, such as more precise auto pilot and bombing capacities.the rwr had female voice in tape, to warn about threats and reinforced structure(a kind of mid-life update).for the rest, the airplane's avionics and electronic suite was just updated , withapq 120 radar ecc the planes known as f4e SRA in greek service were dismissed about 2 years ago, came with the hillgray 2 camo and in 2003 change it to the typical greek f16 camo.one of them was particular, because it was one of about 12 having full glass front canopy without structure beams.they all were replaced by f16 blk52+ to obtain spare parts for the remaining f4e AUP. +ST0RM Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 My bad. I thought that none of the Clark AFB units deployed to the Pennusila during the Gulf War. You were partially correct. The 90th TFS sent jets to Incirlik, Turkey for ODS. Quote
mppd Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) 3rd TFS sent 6 F-4Es to Europe during Desert Storm - Operation Proven Force. 4 went to Incirlik 20 February 1991 (71-1086, 72-1407, 73-1199 and 73-1198) attached to the 7440 Composite Wing, 2 acft went to Spangdahlem and stayed there. Tailcode "PN". The Incirlik birds left 19 March 1991 for Spangdahlem. 2 F-4E's remain unidentified (71-0238, 71-1081, 72-0165, 73-1182 or 73-1197). 90th TFS did not deploy in F-4s. 90th TFS deployed in F-15E to Incirlik and Aviano after conversion to Strike Eagle at Elmendorf. +Dave Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 90th TFS did not deploy in F-4s. 90th TFS deployed in F-15E to Incirlik and Aviano after conversion to Strike Eagle at Elmendorf. But that was well after Desert Storm. The 3rd TFW didn't move to Elmendorf until well after Desert Storm. The 90th TFS still had F-4E's during Desert Storm. My father was at CEM of 11th AF HQ at the time. I went to the ceremony when the 90th got the 1st Strike Eagle. My father was stationed at Elemendorf from 1990 to 1992. Alaska is where I enlisted at the AF at and graduated high school up there. Quote
mppd Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 mmmm...I don't think so.....Check out these pages - these guys were pretty thorough: http://www.dstorm.eu/pages/en/usa/f-4e.html http://www.dstorm.eu/pages/en/usa/f-4.html Also good serial number references for other DS acft: http://www.dstorm.eu/pages/en/usa/ Mike D. +Dave Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Also yes I agree that the 90th did not use the F-4E's, it was the 3rd TFS. The 3rd TFS flew the last combat missions by an active duty F-4E unit. I am not disputing that. What I am saying is that the 90th TFS didnt get F-15E's until after the 3rd TFW moved to Elemendorf AFB and that was after Desert Storm, but it was in 1991. Quote
mppd Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Understood - thanks. Still good to get so many responses to acft historical questions, no? Quote
+Dave Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Understood - thanks. Still good to get so many responses to acft historical questions, no? Yes it is. The 90th Flew F-4G's at the time of Desert Storm. Quote

They were "Arnie" jets, upgraded with the ARN-101 digital navigation and weapons delivery system. That means they have CCIP ( nothing fancy, no green stuff, no HUD, just he normal red sight reticle on the combiner glass which shows weapon impact point ) which never worked really good due to some quirks int he system and Pave Tack capability. TMF made such a kite, and I think it could be included in Ds with the next update ... Quote
+ST0RM Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Whoops, my mistake in regards to the 90th and the 3rd. Too quick with the fingers. Quote

+Crusader Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 No HUDs. The F-4G had a modified gunsight, the electronics put a green cross on the combiner glass which pointed out a located radar emitter to the pilot for a direct attack. Cant do that in the games. Quote
