+ordway Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) I have almost finished the late Mig-23,(the Mig-23MLD cockpit). I added quite a few changes compared to the earlier one including a new later MLD HUD from Starfighter 2, a new blue cockpit color and changed the gunsight around to match photos better. I'm also updating the old Mig-23ML cockpit to better reflect photos...inlcluding a visible grill on the gunsight- (To ibetter irridate your food before eating "dillo" in Angola, I sure). So the late Mig-23MLD was quite a cooker too. It was a lighter weight than earlier versions (to dogfight better) and finally added ECM, chaff and flares. The MiG-23MLD was the most advanced version of the Flogger. It had a different identification-friend-or-foe system (IFF), a more advanced missile capability and a distinctive notch in the leading edge of the wing to improve flight characteristics at high angles of attack. They were apparently produced between 1982-85 during the cold war years and would have been available for the "Ronney the Ray-gun" era. The two cockpits compared for download. Older Mig-23ML with "grill" in the gunsight. Later Mig-23MLD with new blue cockpit color and HUD Edited May 21, 2009 by ordway Quote

+ordway Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Is the mini radar screen under the sight accurate? As they say in the movies, its a radar screen and its sort of on the HUD (which it should be). I don't have the personal capabilities to do it better...and the Mig-23 is not one of my big favorites to give me enough motivation to do the radar from scratch totally on the HUD (if it is even within the capabilities of the SFP1 series engine to begin with). Secondly, apparently, the radar almost never worked in real life...the technology was too advanced for the Sovs for what they were trying to do at the time with the Mig-23. Thirdly, compared to what we had for a later Mig-23 cockpit before, this is a huge improvement and at a quick glance cannot really be distinguished from a real one. The middle row of switches is there in front of your face and you sure would not mistake this cockpit for any other Sov aircraft with its HUD and distinctive switch placings. Quote
Miracles Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Great job. You have convinced me to reinstall both WoV and WoE. Quote
+ordway Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Okay all you Mig-23 experts out there, Can anyone provide an airplane manual, or photo of a Mig-23 MLD gunsight to tell me whether its gunsight had the grill on the gunsight or not? Quote
WLJet Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) There's a couple of MLD cockpit photos in this site (2 of the smaller pics and click them to enlarge): http://www.geocities.com/iek_17/walkarnd/mig23wa.htm Edited May 21, 2009 by WLJet Quote

gregair Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Excellent stuff Ordway, the cockpits are really great, Im looking forward to this. Time for me to try my hand at some Angolan Mig-23 skins, the old 23ML's are quite cool in their faded camo and the new refurbished ones look neat too. Somone please do a good Sub Saharen or Southern Africa terrain. Quote
Baltazar Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Any hope of getting the proper RWR (SPO-15) in cockpit like on the TMF MiG-29 or the old analog SPO-10 from the MiG-21 cockpits? Just so we can get the sense of direction for the threat... Btw Awesome work!!!! Cheers, Fox Quote

These are the best photos of Mig-23MLD gunsights I have. I see it looks very different than the earlier gunsights...almost juried rigged looking with the little knobs on the gunsight, etc. Edited May 21, 2009 by ordway Quote

Shaolin Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Yes, create a separate lod for it, and try adding it using FC's 'copilot" method. I think the question was not how to get it in the 'pit, the question is how to make it work. It is a "analog" type of display, with lots of little lights... Quote
+ordway Posted May 21, 2009 Author Posted May 21, 2009 Playing around with the MLD gunsight initially gives this...quite striking really. Quote

It is a "analog" type of display, with lots of little lights... Getting it to work is easy, as it's been done before (been there, done that, have the bags under my eyes to prove it). Getting it into an already finished 'pit, especially this one, where the original developer has lost the max file in a disk crash, is a horse of a different color. The copilot method is probably the only way to go. Quote
+Wrench Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 A small request.... if possible, can it also be tested in SF2, if it supports the HUD stuff??? 'cause I can't get any of the 17 or 19 pits to work .... game keeps crashing. Hate to be pest/annoyance/whiner ___ fill in the blank. Just asking! many thanks for ALL your hard work, ordway! wrench kevin stein Quote
