Rossmeister 0 Posted October 7, 2009 (edited) Okay guys, so I've recently gotten OFF, and after playing around in QC and trying out different planes, I've started a German campaign with the intention of keeping it going. So far I've flown for only four hours with Jasta I across nine missions in two days(!) The current date is 23rd of August 1916. This morning the whole aerodrome had to scramble (in fact the whole area did) to counter about eight F.E.2.b aircraft flying at a pretty solid altitude- probably a recon mission to map out our side of the front. They flew without escorts and I was pretty excited to just get up there before they got away to make some kills/claims. My Halberstadt II was taking me really slowly upwards, though steadily.. it was just a moment of time until we would see the wretches go down. So I finally reach their altitude, make a slow turn and place myself at the rear of their formation, only theres a straggler. I follow him because he got pretty far away. Guns blazing, I see him go down and head back for more. But what do I see? The formation has decided to turn for home! So now I'm right in the middle of the formation, trying to make the best of it. I get out of it with only taking a few hits from an unseen direction and I place myself at their rear with another slow turn. I take aim at the rearmost machine... *CLICK* My gun has been damaged. I've fired about 100 round and have 400 left. Seven machines still in the air, and I am the only one at their altitude. Some curses later I dive down and make my landing. God I love this game. EDIT My pilot's name is Erich Zahn. Ten points to whoever gets the reference. No googling! Edited October 7, 2009 by Rossmeister

EDIT My pilot's name is Erich Zahn. Ten points to whoever gets the reference. No googling! Sweet... glad you like the game! I see you found the heart of what it's all about real quick... that is a dynamic campaign and total immersion!!! Well... if you're from Long Island, NY... Zahn's Airport? It was a top notch airport back in the 40-70's and many folks on Long Island got their PL's there. It was owned by a guy named Zahn (possibly Eric?) and was located on a section of his farm. It was closed in 1980 (the last known accident at Zahn's Airport was a Cessna 172 which was flying at night during the Chistmas season, the pilot became confused, stalled, and slammed into my friend Mark Zelko's house!!) in favor of the more modern and larger Farmingdale/Republic Airport. Again.. I might be really off here... but it is the same last name as the airport, so it was worth a shot. I spent a lot of time there as a kid washing planes for rides!! itifonhom 6 Posted October 7, 2009 Hey Rossmeister, nice to see you have a good time out there! Say goodbye to your social life and be prepared to loose some sleep! Since I started campaigning, I lost some hair too! itifonhom
Rickitycrate 10 Posted October 7, 2009 New guy alert! Hi and welcome to our OFF world. You are having a proper start it seems. Good to hear of your enjoyment and happiness. I think if you are like many of us the game/sim will get even better with time and experience. You have much to look forward to. Let Olham know your town and country to be plotted on our OFF Pilots map please. See sticky for clarification.
Canvas Wings 1 Posted October 7, 2009 I take aim at the rearmost machine... *CLICK* My gun has been damaged. God I love this game. Awesome isn't it? Welcome to the mess, Rossmiester! CW
Bullethead 12 Posted October 8, 2009 I've started a German campaign with the intention of keeping it going. Welcome aboard! New guy buys the drinks! So far I've flown for only four hours with Jasta I across nine missions in two days(!) The current date is 23rd of August 1916. I wish Herr Zahn the best of luck. However, I hope he has his life insurance paid up. Life here at the front is nasty, brutish, and short. Fortunately, here we're all adherents of the One True Faith, which believes in instant reincarnation at the prime of life, with full memories of all that's gone before but without having to go through all that tiresome business with diapers, eating your veggies, school, puberty, etc. Just straight into booze, tobacco, women, and adrenaline! Of course, none of us will live to see 25, but who cares if you just start over again at 21? I take aim at the rearmost machine... *CLICK* My gun has been damaged. But look on the bright side. A few inches either way and the bullet that ruined your gun would have hit you or your fuel tank. Whoops, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. But that's why we're all in the One True Faith here, because lots of times those few inches do go the other way
Baldric 42 Posted October 8, 2009 Hiya Rossmeister, welcome aboard! Jasta 1 is a good choice, and my many pilots have been flying with 'One' since 1916, and I'm currently in April of 1917. Glue your hair on because it starts getting intense soon enough! Best of luck
Ryan H 0 Posted October 8, 2009 So far I've flown for only four hours with Jasta I across nine missions in two days(!) The current date is 23rd of August 1916. Welcome!! If you go into the workshop, you will find an option to change the time advance to manual, thats what I do anyways. I usually fly 5 days straight and give myselft two days off each week, sometimes, 4 days of flying and 3 days off if I'm feeling lazy
Rossmeister 0 Posted October 8, 2009 (The Zahn I am referring to has nothing to do with aviation at all ;)) Yeah I'm having agreat time so far you guys, but I'm struggling with the patience to fly manually through all the quiet parts.
Olham 164 Posted October 8, 2009 You can always warp, Rossmeister.
Rickitycrate 10 Posted October 8, 2009 Erich Zann..... seems to be music related but I can't place my mind on him exactly. I know the name from somewhere.

Rossmeister 0 Posted October 9, 2009 Yeah you guys, I AM warping, but isn't that sort of taboo around here? =P Erich Zann..... seems to be music related but I can't place my mind on him exactly. I know the name from somewhere. Closest one yet! Oh and yeah, I'll buy the drinks. I keep a bottle of Canadian Club strapped in my cockpit at all times. The cap off so it's ready to drink. The centrifugal forces of my destined fatal spin will make sure it's not wasted, right? Right...?
Wels 2 Posted October 9, 2009 Hello Rossmeister, welcome, did you do studies at Miskatonic University ? Greetings, Catfish
Olham 164 Posted October 9, 2009 Rossmeister, I know what Erich Zahn does, but I googled. I assume you really are German, cause your subline "i get pissed off" was surely meant in another way. In english it means "to be really annoied" or "to be turned off by something", and I don't believe, you wanted to say that. Thanks for the drinks. Make sure your fatal spin is headover, so the CC is really not wasted.

gaw 5 Posted October 10, 2009 Yeah you guys, I AM warping, but isn't that sort of taboo around here? =P R.......naaah! I'll bet practically everybody warps.....I know I do. There's all tastes here....some scorn all the aids....no warp, no tac, no external views, no nothing.....bless 'em......I don't have time to fly full duration missions......life it's ownself keeps making importunate demands.....work, sleep, wife, etc.....and I can't find the bad chaps without help....so, the back of my hand to guilt....I use 'em and still never last more than a few weeks at best. I daresay if you flew invulverable with all your weapons on max strength it might diminish your sense of acheivement but there's every taste under the sun catered to by the devs in workshop.......use 'em to suit yourself. Anybody else want to weigh in here.......the views on what's "proper" are as varied as they are passionate. Welcome indeed and have a ball. GAW
Rickitycrate 10 Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Oh yes, my mind was tapped into my warped side just enough to have the music of Erich Zann flash briefly. I am a huge fan of Lovecraft but when in this forum my mind is on another "plane". Nice to know I'm not alone here with my Lovecraft appreciation. Warp, sure go ahead. Do what you want and have fun. I don't think we are a group of "hairy tough nuts" here. Fly DID if and when you want. I've never seen any real judgements made in this forum about anyones settings. I've been flying pilot never dies alot because I'm learning a new stick and been out on photo shoots to make screenshot postings. When you consider all the options the devs have given us there can't be too many guys flying with exactly the same settings. It's your game man, do your thing. Olham 164 Posted October 10, 2009 (edited) Rossmeister: Yeah you guys, I AM warping, but isn't that sort of taboo around here? We wouldn't be such a good community, if we had such taboos. Everyone to his own likes, definitely! It is only tabbo, to insult people, or talk nasty about this sim or any other. I have different pilots. Most of them warp, use labels sometimes, use TAC. And then I have two, who fly the DiD Standards (see sticky thread above) - those I only fly, when I am patient, quiet, not angry, and awake (so I fly them VERY rarely - Lol!). It's very hard to get far without the crutches. All the others are for the more instant action/fun. And death. Edited October 10, 2009 by Olham
itifonhom 6 Posted October 10, 2009 Well, I don't warp, not anymore, but I try and choose missions not that far and possibly not too far on the "other side". But I use TAC and sometimes labels, mostly for recognition but in big furballs I use labels even for fighting. I still think that I play fair, after all actually being there in a cockpit with three dimensional vision, side vision, 3D sound and all has nothing to do with looking in 22" 2D monitor and try to understand your suroundings. And if I was really at Jasta 2 I'd have Boelcke all the time by my side teaching me all the tricky things but now I'm almost alone, apart from this community of course!! This sim is all about fun not frustration. itifonhom
Olham 164 Posted October 11, 2009 That's true, Iti - and perhaps you have me there. (I also have a pilot in Jasta 2, September 1916.) You're never alone. All the fallen pilots keep flying their aircraft over the front. You just can't see them. When you see them one day - you have crossed that line...
