SF2 Series DACT Reports And Related A2A Discussions (Game only)

Recommended Posts

Went back and forth with SF2 and SF1. it seems like The Flight Model for Sf2 is more stable than SF1. While i feel SF1 is more challenging and exciting. Sf2 is a bit easier for getting gun cross on the target.

Btw really good DACT Caesar. i really like reading Eric and your reports.

Okay and we are back... okay I am anyway after a long lay off with SF2 I decided to go for a turn and burn in a Tornado IDS running Anti-Ship in NATO V setup. Year 1986.

Tornado IDS Marineflieger vs 1 Mig-23MLD battle of the swingers...

Tornado Loadout 2 Kormoran 2 Sidewinders Tanks and 1 x ECM Pod 1 x Chaff Flare Pod.

Mig-23 everything he could carry including the kitchen sink...

Take off single ship and headed out to the target area practising low level flight 50ft and below need to work the rust off. Once in the target area I was listening to the radio and was hearing Fox 1 etc etc as a flight of F-4's were dealing with some Mig-23's playing as if no AWAC support no looking at the map. I paid more attention to the strike sortie had an SA-13 fire his full load at me as I skirted an airbase but as I was low and fast nothing much happened... I climbed up to take my shots with the Komoran's and turned for home it was during this that the Mig decided on attacking me, breaking through the fighters, he fired a single Apex Radar guided at me I punched off my tanks empty anyway and switched on the jammer and started pumping out chaff and flares just in case (My Mig-23's are edited to carry a single Radar and a Single Heat AA-7). I turned into the missile and broke lock figuring out I had enough room to run which I didn't as the Mig fired again at me with a AA-8B which I jinked out of as it plowed into the ground attracted by flares I killed burner and slowed to around 300Kt's forcing the Mig to overshoot at around the speed of heat I gained a lock with my Aim-9L's but held fire as he was moving to much for a good shot. We entered a single circle fight both bleeding airspeed down to around 200kt's at which point he lit his burner and went straight and level to get some speed up I fired my first sidewinder at him which decoyed away to the flares and accelerated after him unable to match his speed away. The AI then went vertical and I went with him trying to get a missile shot which was good enough to hold onto but this did not work either as at this point an SA-6 fired a pair of missiles my way to which I went back to the deck to avoid. The Mig followed me down and I tried for a faceshot as we were both heading head on but this missile also decoyed away leaving me with a my guns and he had 3 AA-8B's and an AA-7b Apex and his guns to shoot me with and I was getting low on fuel!!! We then entered another one circle fight and I forced him out in front of my jet and started peppering 27mm rounds in his direction and managed to hit once and he gained a flamer which 2 seconds later went out and he was still moving. But he was still out in front of me I then peppered him some more and he exploded leaving me to turn for home low on fuel and out of weapons, well I had about 20 rounds left in the guns. Had to divert to an alternate field as my gas level was too low to make base.

Take aways not much but never underestimate the Mig-23 you cannot outrun it and now in Nato V the flares are much more effective not good!!! Time of fight 5 minutes. Need to try this again but with a Mig-29 or an Su-27.

My sorties are always set within a standard Sortie and not made to meet specific requirements as I believe that it makes it more realsitic.

Had an interesting mission and was compelled to write something of it.. so a fictional letter from a fictional pilot to a fictional lover about a fictional mission conducted by a fictional squadron in a fictional war.....

Dear Kris, After a long and unbelievable day i finally have a chance of peace. i decided to take this opportunity to write as i may not have another chance again. war is escalating and the fighting has increased. The enemy's air activity is more frequent and intense. My squadron Received an unusual order. we were tasked to land base our F-14 at an airstrip near the frontlines as part of the quick response group formed due to the increase in agression of the enemy's air fleet. They need a a platform that can perform any mission and can respond to every threat. Has long legs with varied and powerful arsenal. Has to be able to conduct this mission efficiently and autonomously. For these reason the F-14 was chosen. An hour after our debrief a recon Phantom detected was caught by a flight of what seem to be a heavy strike group of Mig-23 escorted by Mig-29s. the Phantom came under heavy fire but was able to relay the details of the offensive before losing contact with the awacs. Our planes were quickly prepped with 4 AIm-54C, and pairs of AIM-9M and Aim7P. near the boarder We detected the strike group 72nm away. as we have no other fighters coming from that are we were cleared to engage. Despite the report my Rio and I was asthonished. our System can track 24 different targets but this is the first time that we have all 24 on Display and we know that there's more. Our objective was break them up and hold the strike group while we wait for the AF to mobilize. We spread out and locked on our designated targets. I took upon the lead group of the strike force. One phoenix for a single A/c. 50nm We were cleard to fire and we did. a Blanket of smoke pass us as one by one the phoenix climbed on its arc to meet its target. we waited patiently. One by one the numbers counted down and the radar signature of each of my target was gone. positive hit on all four. Ens wise has 3 positive kills, Lt Webber has 2 while miraculously Lcmdr White only has one. Awacs radioed in. alerting us of the position of the escort group a flock of mig-29 has sneaked up on our nine. My rwr woke up. and we turned in into the Migs. The fight that ensue was a nightmare. We counted 12 bandits. so each one of us have 3v1. I locked on with the lead. My Rwr Screams and my wing man alerted me of a missile launch. i was still doing .90mch i rolled left and pulled hard dropped flares and chaffs.. the missile went past. i rolled my plane back into the bandits and got a lock sparrow lock. i called my wingman for assistance just incase i miss. I fired the sparrow. just about as soon as i fired the sparrow i was beam byanother bandit. i tried to wait it out as i track the sparrow into the first bandit. each second the RWR growl goes louder and i was forced to break lock and hit the deck. a missile passed us overhead but the the warning sound is still there. I jinked left increasing my dive angle and a missile blew a coule of feet from our side. Still got that warning. Im reaching the deck and i decided to level out. im now on a 1.02mch dive. i pulled up and added some burner while dropping chaffs and flares. the g force made me loose my sight for a bit. we heard a boom and we checked for damage. none. thankfully the missile detonates behind us again. I went back into the fight and found my wingman with two bandits on tail. I locked on to the first and got it with the last Sparrow. I positioned behind the second and asked him to break. I got tone and lock on the no.2.. fox 2! Good Hit. A call on the radio. the Lcdr is in trouble. he's winchester and got 3 migs on his tail. Webber is en route to assist but he has anothe mig closing in on him. We persue. Wise got lock on the trailing Mig and managed to get it with a sparrow. I was plugged in and reached the commander with a mig getting ready for a shot. i placed myself between 1 and 2. I placed my trust that Wise will get no.2 before it gets me. no.1 fired and i call the Lcdr to break. He managed to evade the missile. The mig lines up for another shot but i lined him up first. i fired my last missile and it hit. Wise had dispatched no.2 when we received call from the lead of an F-15 squad. reinforecemnt. We were given an update. the enemy has smaller group coming in from the southeast. We were asked to land to prepare for re-deployment. We headed to the Airstrip while F-15's take care f the escort group while another F-14 unit from our carrier engage the remaining strike group.

En route to the Airfield. We were met by an intercept group of mig-29 coming in from the southeast. I requested assistance since we only have our guns and the Lcmdr has none. They were intecepted by the germans own fleet of mig-29. A couple of Mig-29 broke free from the intercept group and was heading towards us. since i still have fuel i ordered my squad to land. while i engage the mig's while i wait for backup. i called command for assistance but none of the fighters in the air is available. I merged with migs. visual confirmation show them to be only carrying bombs and no missile. this evens out the fight since none of us have one and they were carrying a heavy load. I pulled vertical and dropped on the trailing Mig. hoping i can get it before the lead drops its package. Zoomed in for guns. a few hits, But the mig continues to fly on course determined to drop its load on the base. I went for a second one which must have hit something volatile as it exploded into bits. I came after the second mig. got good lead and fired. missed. this time unlike the first mig this decided to drop its package and engage in a fight. I was light on fuel and despite the strain of the previous engagement my tomcat is handling better than before. We jostled. We engaged in a turn circle, to two circles which both of us getting nowhere. I decided to risk my fuel load as i took to t vertical plane the mig tried to follow but came short. i wasn't able to get a shot as he regained composure. another try. no and another. I now have just enough to land my plane. which means my tomcat is so light that im turning in tighter than the mig. i came inside and got into a good position. i decided not to hold back and pressed my finger hard on the trigger. i snapped the right wing off the mig. it went down and i went home. the rest of the offensive gave up and wen't home. Right now we don't need to get back up and my plane is on maintenance. this is t for now. I'll write to you again if i ever get the chance.

Oh yeah how are you doin by the way?

Last of the migs

Finally safe

Nice story saisran..

Slarti. Unfortunately some of my best DACTs were during missions but sometimes it gets pretty routine (in a way) so I don't mention them at all.

Eric I know what you mean which as I always fly as attack not dedicated Air to Air it makes an interesting counterpoint to pure Air dogfighting if that makes sense and I only post the missions that make me work for my kills not the run of the mill go in and come back with 10 kills in an F-4E type scenario where all I was fighting against were Mig-21's...

Tried to Fly The Su-27 for a bit. but since its SF1 I think the Flight Model is a bit out of tune Kept departing on me on the slightest provocation. Does anyone have a Modified FM i can barrow?

doing some cas for friendly grunts, bogeys all over the place. quickly unloaded bombs, asked flight to attack ground, switch to A2A myself. downed 2 mig21s headon with sparrows, 2 floggers with winders. one flogger remain, after some heavy jousting, managed a high deflection gun shot for a 5th. friendly escort took care of the rest but they suffer heavy losses too.

long breath, check map, enemy tanks remain. with only 20mm left i went for the strafe runs. some aaa in the area as usual but didn't pay 'em much attention. after pulling out of the 3rd run i heard a few heavy thumps and plane starts to roll right. apparently golden BBs got lucky this time! bullet holes in the fuselage and right wing, and the right inner flaperon is no more. luckily nothing's on fire and plane still reacts to controls, with a very sluggish roll rate. fuel gauge steady looks like nothing's leaking.

2's in hot wingman says and took care of the zpu seconds later. just about to rtb when seeing green tracers past canopy, wtf.... fishbed on six! another one glued to 3's tail who's already winchester. target no.4 on my guy while i go save 3, attempt to break left but the roll takes forever. thank god there's rudder. with no roll authority a one circle turning fight ensues, the phantom light on fuel gradually catches up and sends the mig into ground after a few painful overshoots.... meanwhile 4 took care of his mig with a winder.

way home is uneventful, but heck this time it's really good to be back!

not exactly a dact but a good mission with some pete mitchel's old man's moment too:)

Not sure how you're doing it, but I took the Su-27 for a spin and the only way I departed was intentional, flew vertical, thrust to idle, and let gravity and inertia do the rest, and realized that counteracting with rudder helps in spin recovery. So after 3 out of 3 attempts I recovered fine, and the Flanker flies how it should, not sure how you're constantly departing, care to explain? And I think it still is the old SF1 FM... July 2012 patch with FM on Normal and Hard, but she flew pretty nice...

that's odd... Flew it like i did witht he eagle since i figure it'll react closely. got into a slow speed high altitude battle with the eagle the got a missile launched called on me. i went for an inverted dive. i gave it a bit of rudder to help change my nose angle and it went spinning. recovered got into a turning fight. each time i gave it some rudder it went off. if you say that its an inherent behaviour then its fine. I was using one DL'd straight from marcfighters.

Hmm... that's the one I used... I didn't add any rudder input when turning, but will check on it later.

I tried it and I think you're being too heavy-handed with the stick to be honest with you, When I turned in a simulated high-g turn with moderate stick input the chance of blacking out increases but was controllable. However, putting a lot of rudder and forcing the stick hard the chance for "departure" exists if you over-correct. So basically take it a bit easy on the rudder and you'll be fine, on Hard. On Normal to Easy departures are very hard to induce so I just think you're over correcting on your technique

yeah I guess you're right. I'm a bit of an idiot. i flew it right after doing a mission with the 14D. As we all know that thing is as stable as a barn. I was thinking the plane is more agile and can take more rough handling(also i think i was carrying a full load that time so might have affect the handling a bit). anyway i DL'd the J-11 and tried it after some time on the viper. this time i was light (4 Aphid) and was able to fly it like much better. the nose cuts in like a knife on input. Blacked out many times. managed to nail. the eagle and fulcrum with the seekers and got guns on one fulcrum. the remaining fulcrum got away when i run out of guns.

The best part was i was coming to land and i was a bit off decided to turn round and try again. Again my idocy came over me and at an altitude where the figures are still yellow i gave it a simultaneous elft roll and pitch command with and some left rudder(i think). the plane sliced it nose across left down on a horizontal plane completing a 180 and recovering. that was an awesome moment. to bad i don't have it on film.

There's always Fraps :)

how do you get fraps to load 10 to 30 mins worth of vid? its so annoying having to initate it every whatso seconds

10 to 30 mins is a LONG video and the file is gonna be HUGE! I have one of my exploits in an F-4E vs a MiG-17F which was shot at 30FPS, half size and its 1.92GB. Now, once you re-render it as, say a .wmp file using something like Vegas, it gets a lot smaller, but if you're trying to record 30 mins of video in FRAPS, make sure you've got the room! FRAPS doesn't have a time limit if you buy it; the freeware one has 60 second clip limits and probably some others (I bought FRAPS a while ago, so I can't recall what the limitations are). For now, it sounds like you have the freeware version, don't think you can get rid of the limits on that.

Ah. thanks. that's another purchase in the future. miss your dacts caesar.

As Caesar said, buying a license gets rid of the limit, but I use WIndows Movie Maker to reduce the size of the files after recording in Fraps.

Now i remembered why i didn't get fraps before. it works fine with sf1 on my lame systems but seriously hits framerates when im running it with Sf2. oh well im sure i can use it with something else.

Eric and Caesar. DACT please!

Got an idea, do you have a specific set up you'd like to see? We've had a heck of a lot of missions, and although there have been some FM changes over time to various aircraft (new F-14, new F-16, updates to the F/A-18, program patches, etc.) we've flown a lot against a lot. Is there a scenario you had in mind?

well, nothing at the moment really but the first thought that came into my mind was "vampire" then "hunt". don't know how you could use it though.

That sounds like an intercept mission against cruise missiles fired at an aircraft carrier (Call "VAMPIRE" when a missile is launched at a ship in the CVBG) which is a bit outside of Dissimilar Air Combat Training - more so running an intercept. In the real world this is a very important mission, and one you'd better not dick up, since you have literally thousands of lives relying on you. In game, however, I don't see that as a very exciting engagement to read about.

Just thinking about our airframes, we've covered a lot in the F-14A/B/D and F/A-18E/F (especially) but not a hell of a lot in most of the others. An engagement with the F-4 here and there, an F-8 in one or two, I recall doing an F-101 v F-100 once, and an A-4 Super Fox on an occasion. Any interest in other aircraft?

i do have an interest in both F-8 and F-5's performance against newer at least the aircraft that replace them or simliar. like F-5 vs early models of F-16 and F-18. or F-8 vs the F-4 or another. (but i think most of them might be too one sided.) Im also liking the flanker(it is a pretty airframe) quite a bit right now. been pitting it up against the Mig-29s, F-15's etc.
