Lt. James Cater Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 (edited) We all do it, using an aircraft in ways that would never have been tolerated in reality. Unless you are seriously stuck on historical roles, these planes can be used in ways that never would have been seriously considered by their users. F-102-Ground attack. For certain CAP missions or reconnaissance i would load up the aircraft with HVARs. After taking care of mission requirements i would go to Soviet bases looking for things to blow up. IIRC, in one campaign i destroyed about 7 MIG19s and 21s with the rockets. Then it was back to altitude and home. A-7-Fighter Bomber. Given the fact that in WOE you have the availability of the 9L, it was a given that enemy fighters were fought against rather then us running. Another thing was after a strike and on the way home, check with Red Crown to see if any enemy aircraft are heading your way on their return to base. If they were on a course that favored an intercept attempt, then go for it. F-105-Interceptor. Variation on the way the A7 was used. Used in it's usual strike role but armed with a pair of 9Bs. Outbound from a strike, monitor radar and Red Crown to see if any enemy are on near reciprocal course. If fuel allows, stalk and engage. F-4-Weasel varient. This one is for strikes on certain routes or targets. Load up with 4 ARMs while your wingman carries the bombs for the primary target. After take off, fly to a point where you'll release #2 towards the target, then go high up and monitor the RHAW and radio for SAM activity. As you will be above and some miles behind him, you can really do a number against the foe. If things are quiet on your srike, engage the enemy firing on other friendlies EF-111-Weasel varient. This one is virtually a gimme and it helps strike aircraft. Load up with HARMs and go really high and fast. What you are going to do is hunt for SAM radars in a certain area and take them out. You want to be able to destroy the overlapping coverage so a section of airspace can be opened up for others to be able to fly through with minimum danger. Edited March 18, 2011 by Lt. Slartibartfast Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Oh I have done that on occasion with A-4's Tornado GR1's Jaguar's you name it I have flown it for the wrong mission... it's great fun... Quote
Derk Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Even shot down a MiG 17 with a Bronco.... Houdoe, Derk 1 Quote

Spinners Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 A-1H's are especially good against MiG-17's  Quote
+EricJ Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 A-7-Fighter Bomber. Of course it was a Phantom so... Quote

Lexx_Luthor Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Il-28 patrol day interceptor, rebuilt and optimized for that role. Roundabouts 1950 or so, SAC and NAVY have long range Elint crawling all over Soviet borders, to support strikes against USSR, and you need a long range interceptor to get at them, especially in the north, assuming they are un-escorted, which is a good assumption for really long range missions over water. No Sidewinders (or Atolls) though -- so sorry. Although I wonder what the range of the MiG-15 was with the extra large super duper tanks. Quote

Actually, using the IL-28 as an interceptor is a hell of an idea! As it is a bomber, it has good range and it is fortunate enough to be armed with two forward firing 23mm guns. Even the tail gunner can be brought into the act by flying just ahead of the target at a slightly higher or lower altitude. Quote
Spinners Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Judging by the number of times that I've been shot down by a 'Beagle' I thought that they were fighters! Quote
Lexx_Luthor Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) B-57 too lol. Fellas, optimize the Il-28 for the role. If no radar (this is about 1950 or so), delete the nose guy and add cannon -- nose glass mesh could be covered with a blank decal matching the aluminum metal skin. Pour fuel in the bomb bay for long flights over polar waters. I would say maybe delete the tail gunner -- but -- with a small plane like that, how would that effect its flying ability? I really think it would make a nice impromptu interceptor in it's stock form. With your modifications, it sorta reminds me of the JU88 nightfighter. The one thing i'd advise is to keep the tailgunner. The more i think of the A-7, the more i'm considering another campaign in one. Between the Limas and the M61, it can be quite a surprise for unsuspecting enemies who decide to engage at close quarters. Quote
Sheriff__001 Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Very much guilty with A-4's (but with one mitigating circumstance, they're Australian A-4G Skyhawks and they were used in the air defence role) Quote
