It's Time To Play, "Who's Paint Is This" !

Recommended Posts

.

There you go Olham and Dej! And, while technically May never flew for 9 Naval Squadron, I will allow the answer as OFF lists him in that unit. For whatever reason the sim does not show the RAF squadrons after the April 1, 1918 merger of the RFC and RNAS. You both gave excellent answers with good additional information.

The standings after the first round:

Dej.............3 points

Olham........3 points

Next picture will be posted at 7:00 p.m. GMT, May 3, (that's in little less than 7 hours from now).

C'mon folks, join in. This should be more than a two-horse race! All you need is to look through the skins to find the bulk of the answers for this contest.

What if we don't have HiTR yet?

I may give some of these a shot but as I'm new to OFF and to WWI aviation, I don't know how competitive I'll be.

Great! Welcome, Shiloh! :drinks:

Lewie, with HitR came the Nieuport 28 and the DH-5. All other skins should be there for you.

Come on, give it a try!

The more the merrier, so join in Shiloh and Lewie and Hasse Wind, and all! Not to worry about HitR Lewie, I just won't use any of the N28 or DH-5 paints. I'm easy to work with.

Everyone ready for round two? Thinking caps on then, here is the next picture:

OFF_WPAI_003.jpg

And here are your questions:

1. Who was the pilot that flew this paint scheme?

2. Which jasta did he fly for in this paint scheme and during what time period?

3. Who flew with this pilot as his observer until mid-1915, later becoming a famous ace in his own right?

Good Luck All!

Lou

Shouldn't that be 'infamous' ace, Lou?

Could be, Dej...could be. And do you have the answer already Sir? If so, go for it!

Oh, alright...

1. Bruno Loerzer

2. Jasta 26, early 1917

3. Hermann Göring

Loerzer receved the PLM in February 1918, simultaneously taking command of JGIII and in Fokker D.VIIs putting the fear of God into allied squadrons in the summer of '18. He remained friends with Hermann Göring and became a Major General in 1938. He had an eventful life:

His II Air Corps participated in the invasion of Russia in the summer of 1941, as a section of Kesselring's 2nd Air Fleet -- in support of Fieldmarshall von Bock.

His unit was transferred to Messina, Sicily in October 1941, and he remained there until the middle of 1943, when his section returned to the Italian mainland.

Göring promoted Loerzer to Generaloberst in February 1943 and in June 1944 was chief of the National Socialist Leadership Branch of the Luftwaffe. He retired in April 1945.

Died in 1960, aged 69. Some memories he must have had.

Wow! A lightning fast answer that is correct and then some. Well done Dej.

Oh, wait, wait! Dej, you noted "early 1917" for the time period on Loerzer's DR1. That is not quite right Sir, but you have still earned 2 1/2 points. That means there is 1/2 a point out ther for someone yet to claim on this one.

Also, the next picture will be posted at 2:30 a.m. GMT, May 6, (which is 10:30 p.m. May 5 on the east coast of the US). Be ready everyone.

From what I gathered Bruno was CO of Jasta 26, and then was CO of JG III in August of '18 The DRI in Jasta 26 was used from early April to June 17th, I'm not sure that the DRI of Bruno's went with his transfer of command, they were flying DVII's soon afterwards though.

Just to be clear Lewie, what year are you referring to for the months you noted of the DR1's use in Jasta 26? (I am quite sure I know full well what year you mean, but just for general edification).

A precipitous answer as it turns out... Dr.1 with those crosses... in early 1917? DOH! *Slaps forehead*

Good to see you on the scoreboard Lewie. But as this is a prize competition I think Lou must be granted 100% control over the skins posted, plus the fact, if you post one you're automatically depriving yourself of three points... if that's what you're asking.

Oh yeah, yup I just had a killer skin and story behind the aircraft.

I must practice patience

Patience, Grasshopper Lewie, patience. When you can fly the length of the OFF front without a trail of AA bursts following you, then your plane will not be seen or heard...and you will be ready.

Time for the next round folks, so let's dive right in, allons-nous?

OFF_WPAI_004.jpg

1. Who was the ace that flew this paint scheme, and what is the plane type and model?

2. Which escadrille did this pilot fly for in this paint scheme, and during what time period?

3. What was the final number of palms attached to this pilot’s French Croix de Guerre?

Bonne chance!

Lou

George Guynemer's Nieuport 17

Escadrille N3 Very late 1916 to about summer of 1917. There were a number of variations in the N 17's, including a tricolor spinner off one of the Albatros' he shot down and an N17 with an upper wing with camo instead of silver.

19 Palms.

Guyenmar's Nieuport is gorgeous. Are there any RL pictures? I couldn't find any on google images

The Nie.17 shown is #1531, I think (difficult to see on an iPhone). It was #1530 that had the camo wing, as part of repairs following a crash on 20th August 1916.

Very good Lewie, you have two of the three correct. It is indeed Georges' N17, and as it is #1531 it is his second one which places it in the time period you noted, (this is also the one that had the Alb spinner you mentioned, but that feature is not modelled in OFF). However, you missed on the number of palms Capitaine Guynemer ended up with on his Croix de Guerre, so that one is still up for grabs for another contestant. Two more points for you Lewie!

Javito, I just did a Google image search for 'Guynemer N17' and several photos of his planes pop up, one showing the above craft with the spinner fitted.

Dej, good info on the camo top wing, and quite correct according to what I checked as well.

Still a point to claim on this one folks, so go for it!

Dej, je suis désolé, ce n'est pas exact. However, you are very close, if it's any consolation.

This point is still waiting to be claimed.

Well, I guess 25 palms then?

1 silver palm equals 5 bronze palms - so if he had 5 silver ones, that would equal 25 bronze palms.

Sorry, guys, I have been hindered through various reasons, to take part so far.

But now I hope I'm back.
