SF2 Series Air To Ground Combat School

Recommended Posts

Lol wow... The Gimlets/Grouses/Grails are easy, just stay away from close to the objective. Gadflys (SA-6) is a real pain in the ass while the Guidelines (SA-2) is what I descrbed as  let theme fire and jink, and jink again.  I'm a bit rusty on SAM evasion (haven't done any since at least DCS anyway) so I'll have to reinstall SF2 again, but I'd look into carying a few HARMs if possible though, and pick off the 6's and 8's, and maybe 2's.  You won't be able to see he rest until it's too late anyway.  But like DACT sometimes it;s don;t think, react, and so on and it;s not ike Behind Enemy Lines where they magically follow your every move as while they do maneuver once you evade that's it.  ECM and chaff as well.

Ok just flew a mission and i seem to have forgotten to add the SAM i hate the most. Grumble.  The guidelines i can break lock just by diving steeply to atleast 5kft then leveling out sharply. But this thing doesn't break lock unless youre dropping from 30kft to 10ft or your 100ft on the deck. it can also be launched from as far away as 50 nm and from 1nm. It also turns on a dime and very fast. They're littered everywhere as well ( Black Sea Crisis). Had to go home again with a failed mission and half an tail section and with one engine, didn't even bother landing on the carrier as the tail hook was shot.

This is a specific SA-10 tutorial I made years ago, and still works of course...

As for the Guidelines I may have gotten that wrong... but yeah they launch when they do and its not so much turning on a dime it's just player skill :)  Don't worry sometimes I get spiked (back then anyway) by SA-2s sometimes.  Overall I run ECM before entering the envelope.  I think it's game logic that if you're jamming BEFORE they detect you then it works.  Once you get detected and run the jammer it doesn't work....

I'll be checking it out later on. Just purchased the book black aces high hoping to learn about the tactics the crew did during their numerous bombing runs.

Been having issues with F-111Fs doing LGB drops (was using GBU-24) at low level.  I don't know if it's because of the targeting pod mechanics, or because I'm too low and fast, but I basically end up having to drop them ballistically and hope for a hit since they apparently don't have enough time to start guiding before they hit the ground.

If I pop up, how high should I get?  Last time I tried I got up to around 1500 feet AGL and dropped from about 1.5 miles away, but the bomb still didn't start guiding, and fell short.

Shit sorry for not answering man.... Usually the larger the bombs, the more pain in the ass they are, as I usually bomb from high up with -10s and -24s and not always low level (I don't always bomb with those, usually -12s or -16s).  But needless to say start out farther out until you can perfect a drop with those bombs.

And I'd suggest the Bombing Range to do that as well, if you haven't downloaded it already.  It'll help you practice without distractions (other than the unnecessary escort flights).

I've been using the Nellis Range to practice.

I guess the big issue was me trying to shoehorn a weapon into a suboptimal mission profile for it.  Was trying to hit a bridge in Germany, but set the level of Air Defense so high the only way to survive was to burn in at 200 feet AGL.  The GBU-24s didn't particularly like that, apparently.  Guess I'm gonna have to go the old fashioned route of retarded Mk. 84s.  XD

True the big ones just don't have that maneuverability that the -12s and -16s can do.  Granted that is a bad profile anyway....  But if you can load JDAMs you'll get more play rather than LGBs all of the time.  Amd those will work fine

The weird guidance issue JDAMs seem to have turns me off to them, though.

Plus they're not really an option in a mission set in 1987...  XD

Well.. that is a problem

But as far as guidance they're pretty good hitting the target, I like them in the Afghanistan map quite a lot, though I stick with the 500lb more than anything heavier.

When they guide right, they're great, I agree.  But the problem is getting them to do that.  I've noticed that if I'm not like 2 miles out and in at least a 15 degree dive, they'll to this weird pitch-up thing and fly off into the middle of nowhere.  It's REEEEEEALLY weird.

Hrm... I'll have to play with them (haven't in a long time) to see how that's going...  Though I think you can get out further...

Also which one is it? I'll have to knock it out tomorrow as it's getting late here.

Okay hit one for one so... I think it's your GuidanceType that's the issue, so open up your Ini file for the V4 and I think back then it was "6", and just change it to 8:

GuidanceType=8

I am indeed.

GPS guided Brimstones seem to work just fine.  So I don't know what's going on.

Might be your flight profile, as I generally drop a few miles out (not too close but not too far, I tend to drop like they're all GBU-38s I guess) and hit all the time.

I seem to get good results dropping from about 2-3 miles out in a 15 degree or so dive.  Might as well just stick with that.

If your doing laser guided bombing at low altitude I would suggest that u release the bomb at least 3.5 miles that's what I do and it works

The last time I did that the bomb hit the ground about 3 miles short of the target...  XD

Need some opinions on the air-to-ground arena please:

Being able to employ LGBs for instance on the F-14D, how do I employ them on ace888's EF-2000 (Beta) or JAT81500's AdA Rafale ?

Because I can't find no laser designator or targeting pods in these aircrafts load armament list.

Thank you.
