FE2 Aircraft Hit Box Revisions

Until I get enough done to make a package, I'm going to post these as I get them done.  I didn't approach this work with enough forethought to annotate every change, so I'm having to compare new vs old files to determine what changed.

 

Because there are more than a few variations on flight models, you'll have to cut and paste the changes into the *_DATA.INI files you are using.

I just use the same specs as the bounding boxes (which I also use for the hit boxes)

 

BUT...

 

sometimes the hit box/collision point needs to be smaller than the bounding box. In the case below, for the Sea Venom (not released yet by Veltro), it has a tendency to 'drag is butt' on take off rotation. The blue being the bounding box, when those specs are used causes a tail strike, even if the actual part isn't touching the ground. So, I had to reduce the size of the hit/collision box (the smaller green box) to prevent that. It dosn't seem to effect damage taken by enemy action, as it still takes damage from gunfire, etc.

Using the bounding box for collision points make sense on the surface, but looking at the stock models there are discrepancies which are confusing to me.  Fuselages have 8 collision points.  Some components have a single point (!).

 

I think the hit boxes in general need to be smaller than the bounding box, which are normally larger than the actual component they are containing.

Yes because think about it: a wing with sweep (or dihedral) but with the same volume. If you use bounding box as hitbox, the larger the swept back angle, the bigger the hit/bounding box is. So this would give the swept wing an unfair advantage with hitbox size --> more toughness. Therefore the ideal hitbox should contain the same volume as the component.

 

But.... I have yet found an accurate way to do it, even looking at the stock min/max values. Atm one just has to eye it I suppose, what they say in aviation TLAR rule (that looks about right...), also some tests by shooting at it.

Stupid question: How I install the Mues Tool box programs?. They come with a lot of .dll files and I don't know where they go (or where go the .exe files)

I only use the LODViewer. I just made a "Utilities" folder on my hard drive and unpacked everything there. I don't know what .dll;s go with each .exe, but if they're all there it seems to work OK. After you launch the exe, you will have to use "File Open" to navigate to where your mods are installed - similar to the old CAT extractor.

Speaking of dihedral, while most 3W models are okay, the SE5a was pretty sloppy on the hit boxes.  No dihedral, top wing wrong cord length and incorrectly positioned in both x and z axis, tail too large, stabilizers wrong z position....

Thanks for these quick uploads Nicholas. I've just submitted Ver 7.0 of my FM tweaks for approval - and they include the previous relevant hit box tweaks you posted, among several other additions. The latest ones for the B.e. types, Salmson, 1A2 and 110/130 Strutters I will include in a Ver 8.0 update down the road, later in the summer, that will include another 6 or 7 plane types for the Western theatre.

You're welcome.  And thank you for your FM edits.  They take a lot more effort.  I'm running out of steam on this myself.

 

I should note the stock 3W Albatros D3's and D5's, DFW,  Camels and Spads are good enough not to bother with them.  I've been decreasing the pilot sizes a bit, but if someone wants to do that for these they can do that on their own (reduce the x value to 0.25 and -0.25).

You're welcome!  I hope they are improving the experience.  Maybe just knowing they are a bit tighter with the actual model is enough. :smile:

Indeed, these are superb updates. I look forward to rolling many of them into the 7.5 update for my FM tweaks. Thank you for doing these hitbox revisions.

Thanks, guys.  I've got this down pretty good now so I can do one model in 30-60 minutes...dependent.  41 complete and I'm not counting how many more to do...LOL.
