There were several proposals submitted and most were based around the "assault ship" concept which was geared towards amphibious operations and utilized the type of air wing you would find on an LHA. The most capable submission was the Anderson design which would have operated conventional aircraft. At the same time there was also a plan to reactivate a couple of Essex class carriers... from what I read years ago the fixed wing portion of the air wing would have been made up mainly of light attack aircraft and light fighters, the A-4M skyhawk was favored for the attack role, perhaps a squadron of A-6's for heavy attack and at the time there was serious consideration to taking a few squadrons of F-8J crusaders out of mothballs and modernizing them to serve aboard retrofitted, modernized Essex class carriers. The air wing on the Anderson design was geared around the same light attack concept, probably A-4M's with a small detachment of F-8J's.
