Nuclear Reactor for Terrains?
Gepard replied to PFunk's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
I made it years ago for Israel terrain and used it later in "Persian Gulf" terrain and "Baltic Entrance" terrain. All terrains were made for WoE or WoI. A stand alone download you will find here: http://combatace.com/files/file/10946-nuclear-reactor/ A simple search in the download section by using the search function and the words "nuclear reactor" -

As recon bird, the MiG-25 made a great job. It operated from Egypt over Israel in the early 70th and evaded HAWK missiles and F-4E fighters by high speed high altitude runs. There were rumours, that some MiG-25 were refitted to carry medium range Anti-Radar missiles (IIRC Kh-58 or so, with a range of approx 100km). I have never seen such refitted birds in real life. -

The MiG-25 fighter versions were used only by PVO Strany, what means air defence, and not by VVS, what means frontline air units. The training of the MiG-25 pilots was only intercept, not dogfighting. The plane had had no dogfight capabilities. It was designed as a very fast, very high flying, fast climbing airplane with limited air search abilities. The pilot relied only on ground control for target search. He has a very limited field of view from his cockpit. No chance for dogfighting. Even the MiG-31 was intended only as interceptor. The ability to carry the R-60 missiles is only to see as a psychological aspect. Neither MiG-25, nor 31 had a internal gun or could carry a gunpod. With the R-60 the pilots had a little weapon for selfdefence, but with the poor agility of the MiG-25 or 31, they would never had a chance to use it successfully. It is like the R-3S Atoll missiles on a L-39 Albatros trainer. Nice to see, but no real chance to use it. -

The MiG-25P was a pure intercepter. It was intendet to intercept the XB-70 Valkyrie bombers and when the USA decided not to produce the Mach 3 capable bombers the MiG had no real target. The SR-71 could be intercepted by MiG-25 only in a small corridor over the Baltic Sea, between Sweden and the GDR, where the SR-71 had simple no space for flight path changes. There the SR-71 was intercepted nearly every time. In the north (Murmansk area), the MiG-25 was unable to intercept the SR-71, because already slight flight path changes of the Blackbird were enough to evade the MiG-25. With the MiG-31 the soviets had a fair chance to intercept the SR-71. The MiG-25P were only used for intercept missions. Never for escorts, CAP, recons, air-to-ground etc. The MiG-25R flew only recon missions. The tactic was simple hit and run. Avoid enemy fighters by high speed, high altitude flying. Fire the missiles and run away. -

SF2 Inactive SAMs Issue
Gepard replied to Mike Dora's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
The term "SAM_Launcher" give the game engine the order to place at this position a SAM system. Not which SAM System. The first entry in a target area related to SAM is "SAM_RADAR". The game engine decides randomly which type of SAM Radars is set on this place (depends on availability and year). The SAM_RADAR type is connected (networked) with a specified SAM missile type. (Fansong Radar is always networked with SA-2. Flatface is networked with SA-3, StraightFlash always with SA-6 and so on) In the _data.ini of the SAM_Radar you will find the line: NetworkType=SA-3 If no SAM missiles are fired in game it could have the reason, that the radar is not working (check wheter there are SAM Radars on the map), then it could be, that the missiles in the weapondata.ini have a different designation than in the, lets say, Fansong_data.ini line "NetworkType=SA-2" An other question. If you fly over North Vietnam, as you said above, do you has tried to press F7 button to see the groundobjects? If you do this, do you see missiles on the launchers? Do you see SAM Radars? Or are there no missile launchers at all? -

How Do You Add Carriers To Germany Map? (WOE)

No carrier groups north of Peenemünde. Its to shallow there. Better to place the carrier somewhere north of Bremen. -
SF2 Inactive SAMs Issue
Gepard replied to Mike Dora's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
Mike Dora, does your problem happen at all terrains, or only at certain terrains? A common mistake made by terrain creation is to place to many air defence units at one target area. The game engine accept only 16 units. If you have a lot of Flak and SAM, only 16 units are active. The others does not appear. The next problem is the timeframe restriction. You should check, wheter you are flying in years with operative SAM systems. Then you should check, wheter the SAM Radars appear in game. Without Radar no missile is fired. -
The question is, wheter you want to have a high tech toy for a fist full pilots or a reliable weapon, which you can build in large numbers and which is usefull on real combat. Dont missunderstand me, the F-22 and F-35 are innovative and outstanding planes, but they does not really fit the needs of the military in field. A restart of the A-10 production would have had a much better effect in the last years than all F-22 together. The F-22 is like a Battleship in the 1930th, great, outstanding, techologically the best of the best, but not really usefull in fight. Why i say this? The enemy today are terrorists like the IS. How usefull was the F-22 in fighting the IS? The enemy of tomorrow will be rather China than Russia. And China you cant beat with a fistfull of high tech fighters. You will need masses of planes, but if you set your cards on the overpriced F-22 or F-35, then you will never get enough planes, because you cant pay them.

Mil Mi-24W
Gepard replied to WINGSOVERISRAEL's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
The model, we see in the screenshots, is an early Mi-24W or in english letters Mi-24V. It has no internal flare dispensers, only the addon flare containers below the tail. The antennas for the EWR are also not to see. And the EWU cooling device at the engine exhaust is also not there. To make it appear as Mi-24D you need only the launch rails for the Phalanga ATGM. The Mi-35 was a simplyfied export version of the Mi-24V. -

After releasing the 100 camos for east german MiG-21's i want to do 100 camo skins for north vietnamese MiG-17F. A first test showed following result: As you see the outer wings are lighter than the rest of the plane. I found out, that it has something to do with the decals. But i dont know, how to handle it. Has someone of you an idea to solve this problem? -

100 skins are made now. Two different ways of decalplacement are tested. I hope that i can release the random skins for the MiG-21F, PF, PFM and MF this weekend. Further i tested wheter the skinset would fit on other planes, just for fun. I found some anomalies. Unfortunatly. -
What If Screenshot Thread.......
Gepard replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Screen Shots
Nope. That was not intended. The german Phantom should have been a single seater, lighter weight version without Sparrow missiles and without air refuel capacity. It was canceled in favor of F-4F, because the demanded development costs were to high. -
Ergo Nix Tunesier, nix Albaner, nix sonstewer.

Isn't stealth overrated? Modern IRST systems are said to be capable to detect a plane at around 150 km. What if the enemy is unable to detect a F-35 by Radar, but can detect and track it with IRST systems? While mockup fights between Eurofighter in F-22, the EF was able to detect and track the Raptor at combat relevant distance. And this was in 2010. The development goes forward. It would be careless to rely only on stealth.

Looking for Russian/Soviet/Redfor Campaign.
Gepard replied to n8d0g's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
If there is no red campaign, then it is not as difficult to make a own one. Try the knowledgebase of SF1 http://combatace.com/topic/72817-adding-new-air-services-in-a-campaign/ Here i descriped how to make a new airforce, that is already included in a campaign usable for the player. It is for WoE, but SF2 is very similar. If you have problems with it, then ask here, not post in knowledgebase.
