Whats your experience transferring installs between systems?
daddyairplanes posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
NOTE: this isnt so much looking for advice as just discussing how its gone for others in the past. So, still working around real life on getting my new computer set up, and the final part is going to be setting up my SF2 installs. currently at a nice medium 90GB worth of goodies (i say medium, i know theres some going holy crap thats a lot and some saying thats rookie numbers ) last time i did this, i backed it all up and dropped it all in after creating matching installs. this time is going slower, as i plan to make it much more painful in the beginning . 5 basic exes set up currently, with new ones to be created for naval combat, NATO 1950-1960, NATO 60-70, and 70 on up. a vietnam dedicated to helicopters, two test specific ones (one clean and one set up for nukes) and a jumbo jet specific one (because, me) but wait theres more! not only am i doing these up, but looking at things like Eastern Med specific to the improvements i've made ( the LARAF Herk skin in there is similar to mine, but mine is tweeked up a bit better as one example) so a process that took about 45 minutes last time is going on 12 hours actual time spent over the last week. whats your experiences installing SF2 into new systems? am i being extra special this time around or still being noobishly simple? -

daddyairplanes replied to daddyairplanes's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
well, as a guy in a movie once said, its a small operation, but theres potential for aggresive expansion! still was impressed. pulling off of external into the system still took same amount around an hour or so on the same system. so 14 minutes was a lil impressive to me at least now back to comparing stock ish aircraft, already in progess -
Is this possible?
daddyairplanes replied to GKABS's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
potentially ignorant comment but.... i think there is either ships that feature vertical launch systems or at least some threads in the early days of hte SF2 records that talk about them if possible on a ship, dont know why it wouldnt be possible on a mobile sam -

ther Eric(K)s are closest in reading my intent on the post Erik: oh i know this. 4 drives total although the two regular HDDs are mirrored (before coffee cant reemember RAID 0 or 1 just yet). and those are now renamed from "RAID" to "Mod Drive". was going to set up the second SSD as the back up drive for the main system but me thinks i will affect a slight change up now EricJ: I thought i was a little low . with this go around im going to try to remember its a flight sim, not a just a digital model painting program all others : thank you for your replies so far. i had a brain fart when i said exes, meaning installs. i did in fact have fun with installing each bit i have from TW to date (from the site this time instead of my external) and am working on the mod folders copied from my old system before totally setting up the new one. although i have a copy of Dels C-130A in the mod folder already even before its official update: transferred from the hdd to the ssd. took 14 minutes to move all 90 GB. im impressed, esp since at best that used to be a start at lunch check at dinner operation -

Need a hand
daddyairplanes replied to UllyB's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
if i were tackling this, i would throw a blank layer on top, them scale the image (not layer) 200-300 percent trace the shape and use color picker to get that down. keep pressing shift while working the pen/pencil/brush/ whatever you use and just make the curves a large series of small straight lines. do the curves esp zoomed in at least 200% if not more the Cryllic word is only slightly trickier, quick google search for an image with it (in the proper font and style) or playing with Word or something similar. PS and GIMP will use teh same fonts you have in your preferred docx program, but looking it up in word first keeps GIMP from crashing (well, at least several years and versions ago, just habit for me now) i understand wanting a ready made copy. but as scratch makes go that one seems really straight forward -

ThirdWire.... What a shame !!!
daddyairplanes replied to Veltro2k's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
you misunderstand what im saying, in saying the payment was a month subscription to the site i acknowledge that none of us (that worked on it) got a single cent from it. its the pay for content rather than access or just to support the site that i had reservations about (however roundabout it may be to call it as such). yes, i've gotten the messages and updates on whats going on. i just happen to be skittish of slippery slopes, however good the intentions that get you to them are. it appears i am just being a paranoid old man on the whole thing, and i hope that is the case. but ive gotten through the four decades of my life listening to the paranoid tingle and calling out what causes it. how this was handled has the possiblitly to change up this site overall in the future esp if it was very successful in Eriks eyes. we havent necesarily shown him the way, just a way to inject funds to support teh site. but again, i hope im just seeing things. finally, the fact that a subscription is required would make it a paid product. who gets the money is irrelevant, the end user to dispense funds to get the access to the whole package -
Need advice on how to save .tga (for image files with transparent)
daddyairplanes replied to Eagle114th's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
going back and rereading the thread. size does and doesnt matter in exporting your tga from gimp it does matter just because of the file size going up in the bigger it is (examples in a moment) it doesnt because you can play around plenty wtih the sizes. the DC-9 project i'm wrapping will be the example. i developed almost everything in 1024x1024. but thats a 4MB file size across 8 files, or 32MB per each airline, times 12 per skin. (now you see why my mods can get huge). I resized the bulk of them down to 512x512 if they had basic geometric patterns, to a 1MB size. but the ones with finer detail got reduced only to 768x768 for a 2.1MB file size. on the extreme end, i made one for the nose gear doors to extend paint when needed but that was only 12x12 and i did the no no as an advanced trick: i ran the color all the way to the edge so it would bleed out and "paint" the whole nose gear door mesh with a 1 KB tga just some thoughts before coffee, hoping theyre useful- 24 replies

Imported/Converted skins ...
daddyairplanes replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Mods & Skinning Discussion
now i'll ask it Kev, why not tga them onto a bare metal skin? im quite aware of the PITA im setting up in the beginning but once the intial skin and placement are done, you can knock out as many as you please very easily only (actual) one skin to work on, about two days (maybe less, youre good with finding positions on a model) to set up the tga then off to the races. and nothing stopping you from doing it with one airliner per skin with serials rather than my everybody is a serial in the skin method up to you, and doubting you go for it. but it seems a solution to your current issue (at least to me) -
ThirdWire.... What a shame !!!
daddyairplanes replied to Veltro2k's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
said it before, say again: its the modders that keep this show rolling check out the ODS campaign. while i wasnt the happiest about it being a paid mod, the payment is a month subscription to the site so it helps everyone (esp Erik) not just one. and it does have alot of good work from the current active crowd all compiled together. not DCS peak quality but i think it will be awhile before we see one third of whats in it from Eagle Dynamics plus,i might know the guy that painted up alot of the big birds in it -

i would talk to allenjb42 or emre mola (i forget his handle here), iirc alot of work on the FB page is based on FS models so they may have a better clue course this is where a baremetal skin and buncha stickers comes in handy you know
