I found him at the Yuma Air Show. It looks like he is slimmer then I remember him in from the future, and he hasn't yet decided he likes the goatee. He is currently an F-5 pilot, and has yet to try the T-65 X-Wing. Hell, I think the X-Wing still has yet to be invented. Anyways, here he is in the future: And here he is in the present:

Hello CombatAce-ites! Here are my modest attempts at aerial photography from last week's El Centro Air Show (110312). I used to post my shots at SimHQ but I consider CombatAce my new home because some of the administrators at SHQ behave like moody little girls. One last thing before we begin our journey to El Centro: I don't think my shots are all that great or anything, but everyone is free to use them for whatever purpose whatsoever, short of selling them. I would expect no one to buy them anyways, but I'm just saying. EA-18G Growler! 100 Years of Naval Aviation scheme #1! 100 Years of Naval Aviation scheme #2! 100 Years of Naval Aviation scheme #3! You think a MiG-23 with it's wings swept back is meant to glide? Is an F-4 supposed to glide?

Man that was cool. I'm an F402 mech who originally wanted anything to do with Hornets, but it's just cool to have anyone else from our line of brethren! Welcome! BTW, why won't MAWTS let me use their simulators?

Here are some random pics I liked from the past couple of months. F-14D testing out it's new ground attack capability. Did you know the Marines were pressing for ground attack capability until it was decided higher up that this would be a dedicated interceptor. Dhimar received Lightnings and tried it as an escort. RA-5C takes off for a high altitude mission. 52K and climbing. I think I hit 68K on this one. An A-6A strikes. These were from a radar intercept mission I designed to try out engagements beginning in the BVR then doing VID for a close in kill. I did a USAF mission then a US Navy mission. MiG down. Now the Navy engagement begins. It was a lousy shot but still, I took it. Then I missed. Locked him up for a shot at about 5 miles away. This should have been good, but the low altitude probably had something to do with the effectiveness of the Sparrow. The 2 ripple shots both went straight and dipped into the ground. 8 missiles later and no kills. -
Mig-21 variants

The F was a low weight fighter interceptor with little to no all-weather capabilities. The PF was a straight-line interceptor without a cannon, but it had a small search radar and some all weather capability. Also, beam-riding missile compatibility was added. The added weight also brought an uprated engine. The PFM got a slightly better radar and the last ones got the cannon pod. Also added were advanced ground attack capabilities in the form of the Kh-66 air to surface missiles. The Ms and MFs got successively bigger engines and better avionics, as well as new radar. The new engine helped greatly with the maneuverability of the heavier MiGs. I think the most pleasant MiG-21 in game is the F-13 and the M/MF. The PF(M) is a dog that is suited for straight intercepts of unescorted bombers. I believe that the MiGs that were complained about doing high speed 'sneak attacks' over Vietnam were of this type and had no choice but to run after their missiles were expended. -

I love the idea of this! I wait in fascination with this conflict since I have read Tom Cooper's awesome book on it. It was a conventional conflict using almost modern technology. -

The Gulf War was actually the last really interesting 'classic war' where a lot of *ahem* almost modern technology was used. A complete conversion would be an excellent addition. -
Airspeed is your only friend in combat vs the early MiGs. 400 knots and above ensures two things: a)gunpods on early Phantoms historically wouldn't operate, and b) you can escape when you get in a jam. Let's examine some stats from Vietnam - 2.5:1 is about the average kill to loss ratio for aerial combat during the Vietnam, though Vietnam makes a MUCH higher claim. That isn't a high one at all. Not when you consider the fact that a Phantom or Intruder of F-105 costs 2-4 times as much as a MiG-17 or -21. What my video and see how I use energy to take out a MiG-17 using only missiles during an early Vietnam scenerio. Maybe you can appreciate the challenge then. I thought this dogfight was a lot of fun even though I only got one kill and most of my missiles didn't work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o74OThmj0s4 The action pretty much starts at 2:45, even though it's a long scene.

Why they call them the Flying Nightmares.... -
Here's my Harrier landing video. It's take off to landing, and there are no hints or voice overs, it's just a video with the landing from the cockpit. That way you can see the speed, pitch, and altitude. I admit that I have a little bit of work to do on learning how to control the attitude of the nose during the set down. I hope this helps, but if you have any questions, please post.

Here are my directions for getting the the AV-8A on the boat: 1. Before you turn onto your final make sure you are at no closer then about 3-4 miles away, 500 AGL, and 140 knots. This means your nozzles are down about 60-70 degrees, and your airbrake is deployed and you are being extremely careful NOT to climb at all. 2. Turn onto final, but don't put it down right on top of the carrier, aim for a point about 1-2 wingspans off the left of the ship. At 2 miles you need to be about 250 feet AGL and have your gear/flaps/maybe break deployed to landing configs. Make sure you do not apply too much throttle or else you will climb and you will gain speed trying to put it down. 3. At a mile you need to be at about 150 ft AGL and doing about 75 knots. Keep making little adjustments to your nozzles and pitch to keep your climb at zero and speed low. 4. Within a mile you should be trying to match the ship's speed. You need to make MICRO adjustments at all times so the plane doesn't lose control - just like real life. 5. Once you are at the ship's speed (about 30 knots) and about 1/4 to 1/2 of the ship length then slowly roll to the right and get her over the boat. Then you slowly adjust your pitch and throttle to set her down - easier said then done. I'll try to make a video to post of this. You can look on youtube for an older version I did with an AV-8B before I had the technique down.

First, get the Vietnam Ground War Expansion for SF2V. Then, get the NATO Fighters 4+ for SF2E, but be careful with adding the Lightning 6 and the Firestreak and Redtop missiles - they will conflict with Exp 2's versions of the same thing. As for individual add-on aircraft, I would recommend the A-4m, A-5A/RA-5C, AV-8B Day Attack, F-101A/B/C, and the MG-21 Cockpits 1.7. Hope this helps.
