The center tank and 4 Sparrows was the most common configuration for Navy Phantoms, where the wing tanks are rarely seen.

As far as I can tell, 2 was the most common loadout when carried at all, but I think the aircraft retained the capability to carry Sparrows on all four stations.

The year between patch 1 and patch 2 was the worst. Everyone was still learning the game, and there were admittedly quite a few problems that needed to be addressed, but the number and quality of mods was really ramping up. Still, a certain vocal group of crumudgeons persisted in coming around SimHQ and talking smack. Of course, in true SimHQ fashion this was allowed to go on at the expense of the people who were there trying to enjoy the game. The most infuriating refrain was "this sime will die, LOMAC will be uber" that we heard a lot of, and it feels great to look back and see how things turned out exactly the opposite. Being absolutely and overwhelmingly vindicated sure feels good!

I could go into so much depth on this, but in the spirit of the anneversiary I will not. Suffice to say that I have met soooo many characters on the various forums, and developed my own bizarre internet personality.

If I am not mistaken, SF turned 5 years old somewhere around the beginning of this month. I remember hounding the local game shops about it, and finally getting a copy at Best Buy. I went in every night looking for it and finally one night they had it along with a bunch of other games sitting in a shopping cart, waiting to be put on the shelves after the store closed. Snagged it and the rest is history. I had played an illicit copy of the Wal-Mart version and after seeing that VF-111 skinned Phantom in the air there was no doubt. So, anyone care to share their thoughts or reminiscences?

Exactly. Calling it a mistake is a way to mitigate the responsibility born by the people who made the decision. Its essentially a political copout in the same way President Clinton copped out and said aw shucks I sure made a mistake when I didn't take bin laden when the Sudan offered him up, when in fact it was a political calculation that took into full account the threat he posed. Its not so much a matter of logic as it is a matter of coming to terms with reality. The people who took the asbestos out of the WTC didn't amke a mistake, they made a fully informed decision that put politics (in this case, envirnmentalism and hypochondria) before the saftey of every person that ever worked in the towers. Why do I bring up the asbestos issue? Because it forshadows the fully informed decisions--not mistakes--made by people such as Jamie Gurelic, President Clinton, and others whose actions facilitated the attacks.
