VMF(AW)-212 "Lancers"

 

 

VMF(AW)-212 came into being on 1 July 1964 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, when VMF-212 transitioned to the F-8D and was redesignated an all-weather squadron. In January 1965 the squadron once received F-8E?s, in preparation for the Marines? only F-8 combat carrier cruise, which lasted from April to December 1965 aboard the USS Oriskany. The commander of Oriskany's Air Wing, the "CAG", was Cdr. Jim Stockdale who was shot down and became one of the most famous of the POW's. The commander of VMF(AW)-212, Lt. Col. Chuck Ludden, was the next senior aviator and, as such, became the acting "CAG". He finished the cruise commanding Air Wing 16, it is believed that he is the only Marine to ever command a Naval Air Wing. After return to MCAS Kaneohe Bay the squadron reverted back to flying F-8D?s until 1 March 1968 when F-4 Phantom II?s replaced the Crusader. Currently flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Tailcode: WD (the squadron retained its own tailcode while attached to USS Oriskany?s air wing).

 

 

VMF(AW)-232 "Red Devils"

 

 

Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron Two Three Two was established at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, on 1 March 1965 from a redesignated VMF-232, the change in designation reflecting the (limited) all-weather capabilities of the F-8D. By December 1966 the squadron had converted to the bomb-capable F-8E and had deployed to Da Nang AB in Vietnam. This deployment lasted until 30 August 1967, after which the squadron moved to MCAS El Toro, California, arriving on 1 September. Seven days later VMF(AW)-232 was redesignated VMFA-232 and F-4 Phantom II?s replaced the Crusaders. Currently flying the F/A-18 Hornet. Tailcode: WT.

Point taken. But within the stock WOV campaigns the Sundowners fly the Crusaders only in 1965 from the Midway, thus their tailcode should then be 'NE'.

Besides, it's interesting that in the WOV campaign the Sundowners transit to the F-4B in 1966...

 

Ah well, nothing is perfect.

Suggestion: Look up the WOVCampRT_data file. Search for VF111 and check which carrier they operate from.

Hint: It's not the Intrepid.

 

Interesting enough, Mersky's F-8 Crusader Units of the Vietnam War says AH, but the Navy's own list says just CVW-10.

 

Besides, I don't mean to claim that the Sundowners never used the tailcode AK, all I'm saying is that with regard to the stock WOV Rolling Thunder campaign the 'NE' tailcode would have been more representative. End of story.

The AK code was probably never used in a Vietnam deployment since it is an Atlantic code. But, its appropriate for the particular variation in markings represented by the skin. VF-111 markings changed a lot over time so for practically every tailcode they wore, they wore different squadron markings. I think the ones represented by this skin are the most impressive, and that is why they were chosen.

Ok so whats all the confusion about then? I am looking at an F-8C of VF-111 with AK tail code 10 days before its Vietnam cruise. Page 105 of the Ginter F-8 book. It's Omar Orpahns by the way. Then I got a pic of them with an NE tail code in 1963 flying F-8D's of the coast of Vietnam. Page 103 of the Ginter book. Then on the same page AH tailcode of an F-8C in 1966 of CVW-16. How about a pic on page 107 of an AJ tailcode F-8H taken in 1970. So again what are we confused about?

Badfrank and some other said that the stock Sundowners tailcode refers to deployments with CVW 10 in 1967 and 68 and I pointed out that with regard to the deployment of the Sundowners in the stock Rollling Thunder campaign (1965 with CVW 2) a different tailcode ('NE') would have been more accurate.

But I guess that C5 is quite close to the truth when he says that certain decal designs are not determined by historical accuracy, but rather by aesthetic considerations.
