Sorry, there's no thunderclap sound to accompany the visual effect, as presently, no provision for adding new sound events exits. Besides, you wouldn't hear thunder from the cockpit, though a static "popping" sound (as one might hear over the radio or ICS due to EMI) might be somehat more realistic.

5 minutes isn't bad. I have two other modders beta testing the mod, and one reported that he's yet to see any ligtning effects, at all, and he's had it for a couple of days.

Ed's correct, you usually don't hear thunder from the airplane. However when you do get hit by lightning it sounds and looks like one of the old Polaroid camera flashbulbs going off.
