When I fly the Vietnam campaign, I`m attacked by SA 3,,7,8,9 and so on cause I have installed the SAM pack! There were only the normal AAA units in this period, no shilkas, and only SA 2 and 3 when I`m right?! What is also needed is a country specific definition for those ground objects. Just to be attacked by the right weapon, in the right country in the right timeperiod. I think you know what I mean ;) Maybe someone can help me?!

well SAMs and AAA are handled "litge" by the game, as are other things :D

for a timeline/country specific install you have to adjust the ServiceEntry and Export dates for each Ground Object.

NV had 8 Shilkas in 1972 or '73 but hey didnt see much action, if any at all.

some SA-3 batteries were available in 1973 but no use in combat occured. The batteries used only the Dual Launch Ramp.

SA-7 was used very actively in 1972 and got several kills agains Helo's and A-1 ect.

Dont know about SA-8 and -9, would have to research that.

some sources stated that "showtime 100" may have been shot down by a sa-3

but it's uncertain

hmm.. that it usually attributed to SA-2...

the SA-3 are close to medium range SAM and used for airbase protection by the NVPA .. I think the area where Showtime 100 went down is in the wrong place for a SA-3 kill. There is also talk about some MiG-21 which sneaked up and shot it down... still one of the 'mysterious' events LOL

But we cant rule out SA-3 usage ... they might have attempted to "test" the system.. :D

Wiki said that the Sa3 wasn`t used by NV cause of russian restriction.. they feared that this systems gets into chinese hands.. NV usually used SA-2 am i right or is wiki ger wrong?!

SA-3s were there in late 1972 according to Istvan Toperczer apparently one of the few foreign nationals that has been allowed access to the VPAF war files - even supplies photos of them with Vietnamese dressed soldiers by them.

Like someone else mentioned, if you don't want these to show up at all in Vietnam campaign, make them so they aren't exported.

But another thing I noticed, is that the SA-7 and SA-9 are listed as type=MOBILE_AAA and STATIC_AAA. This means that they get placed on the map wherever AAA is listed in the targets.ini. The result is an insane volley of SA-7's and SA-9's whenever you fly over a target area normally populated with guns. I think it's a little extreme, in the VietnamSEA terrain, anyway, where there a lot's of AAA. In the WOE terrain, it doesn't seem to be so bad, since there aren't as many AAA emplacements. I'm going to try two things, and see which one works the best and gives a realistic result:

1. Change the types to STATIC_SAM and/or MOBILE_SAM, so that they don't show up in huge quantities with the AAA emplacements. The downside of this is they will only show up where sam sites would normally, and smaller targets with AAA protection won't have any SA-7's or 9's.

2. Change the availability to RARE or VERY_RARE (for availability and exported availability). Hopefully this will allow them to still be randomly placed with AAA installations, but they will show up a lot less often.

I'll let you know how it goes.

If the SAM hits you, it doesn't really matter what it says on the label does it :dntknw:

While I'm at it and updating som SAM launcher data, can anyone tell me what years the following would have been deployed in East Germany?

SA-3

SA-6

SA-7

SA-9

Would it be the same as the service entry date for the Soviet Union, or delayed slightly?

Thanks!

Well, I kinda answered my own question...

Since the enemy nation in WOE is Soviet instead of E_Germany, it would be the service entry date and have nothing to do with exports.

Also, I changed the availability to RARE, and you see maybe one or two SA-7's and/or SA-9's per mission when you scroll around with F7, which seems about right...

However, with TYPE=Mobile_AAA, your wingman don't call out when they launch, so be careful and take lot's 'o flares!

Wingmen do warn you of SAM launches, irregardless of whatever groundobject role you assign to the launchers. FYI, the Mobile_SAM groundobject role has been porked since the beginning (and never fixed), which is why we set the mobile launchers up as "mobile_AAA".

If you want added fun, network the 57 mm and larger AAA. Makes for a decidedly nasty overflight of enemy territory :good:

Ah... So nothing should be set as Mobile_SAM, then?

That's correct. But, it's not really an issue, IMHO

It's only an issue if I went through and changed a bunch of things to Mobile_SAM and then get confused when they don't show up in game!!

:good:
