Luftace 0 Posted August 11, 2009 Have been playing BH&H every chance I get lately but, as I was trying to sleep last night and reflecting back on my flights earlier that day and all the new improvements found in the SP, my mind began to wander.... So I was taxing back to my hangar after a flight, and was naturally admiring the new improved hangars and clutter and such. Then I thought, 'How cool would it be to have my flight crew run out to greet me as I was cutting off the engine, and to have a few on-lookers standing around, counting the aircraft, anxiously awaiting their return. (It probably didn't help I have also been reading Fighting the Flying Circus lately and the detailed descriptions of such things on the ground.) Take it a step further, have your crew chief beside your aircraft at the start of a mission as you start your engine. I am so anxious to get back to flying now that I have the rest of the day off and off tommorow as well, that that's what I'm gonna go do now. That's the big one in my mind that really would be neat to see if possible. I am not by any means expecting any of this to be implemented, as I know as well as everyone else around here how hard the devs are STILL plugging away at expanding and polishing this sim that is already in so many ways more excellent than any of us could have hoped for. Was just day dreaming (Its cheap, and fun!) and figured I would share this with everybody. I will post some more if I come up with any and/or if anyone is interested. Pulling chocks! Olham 164 Posted August 11, 2009 Luftace, there is a certain danger in having sim people acting the same things again and again: they become boring after short time. I believe, that some of the best part of the immersion has to be created by your own phantasy. In older sims, you had a commander's room, where you got your mission. Nice idea first, but after a while, I thought: come on, get through with it - I wanna fly. But maybe some ground crew standing by the hangars and tents would work. Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 11, 2009 Olham, so you resented the C/O in that old game? Sounds like a good immersion factor to me. Seems many C/o's were unpopular with the men. Well at least according to hollywood.
carrick58 23 Posted August 11, 2009 I dont think it is a question of being popular. The Commanding Officer had to stay outside the loop in order to function. I think the film 12 O clock high visually explains it best besides it has airplanes. I do know that I never saw a big bunch of people hanging around the C.O. s even when I was in a small HQ Air Scout unit in the Army back in the late 60 s and early 70 s. Maeran 20 Posted August 11, 2009 Olham, so you resented the C/O in that old game? Wings? I liked that grumpy old colonel. He and I saw out the war together the first time around. There are soldiers with rifles dotted around the aerodromes. So ground crew hanging around the hangars are certainly possible. However, as far as I can tell, mobile people (marching soldiers and cavalry) are restricted to roads, so your crew would be stationary and always in the same place. As Olham says, this might get a bit repetitive. Nice idea though.
Hasse Wind 46 Posted August 11, 2009 Maybe there could a military band playing when you leave and then later come back from the patrol? (Let's see if anybody remembers which old sim had such a nice scene in it...)
Olham 164 Posted August 11, 2009 Hasse Wind: Maybe there could a military band playing when you leave and then later come back from the patrol? Keep dreamin' ! I had the olde sims "Wings of Glory", "Dawn Patrol" and - best of all - "Flying Corps Gold".
Barkhorn1x 14 Posted August 11, 2009 Silent Hunter III has a band and pretty nurses throwing roses at your U-boat as you sail out of the harbor - a nice touch
Olham 164 Posted August 11, 2009 Must have felt like your burial scene in a German U-Boot.
Hasse Wind 46 Posted August 11, 2009 The first U-Boot sim to have a band playing was Aces of the Deep back in 1994. I thought it was a really nice touch, especially when I returned having sent several Allied ships to the bottom of the Atlantic. Now if we had a guy turning the propeller at engine start in OFF, that would be REALLY nice.
Luftace 0 Posted August 11, 2009 Ultimately the screen shot of the mechanic standing in the hanger w/ the new 1.32 SP really got me thinking about such possiblilities. I didn't actually think of the fact that the troops are actually scripted to the roads. Any who though, as far as the guy turning your prop at start, just having him there to go through the motions as u start ur engine then run away and dissappear into a hangar would probably do the trick. Just had the ground crew greeting thing in mind also b/c when we (army blackhawk crews) come back from a mission at the end of the day, we usually have other crew members run out to the flightline to help us w/ any inspections, maintenance, or just tying down the aircraft and stowing gear. A couple other ideas I had were: popping flares for wounded signal etc. Flags on the flight leaders aircraft for easier ID
Cameljockey 3 Posted August 11, 2009 I believe there are flares in OFF or at least there used to be. The devs said they tried the streamers but they just wouldn't act right so they were left out. Someone correct me if I'm wrong as sometimes my memory escapes me. Too much wine, women, and song in my younger days. CJ

CJ Hadn't known about the flares, but upon you mentioning the streamers trying to be previously implemented and so far unsuccessful, I do recall the devs saying something about that. rabu 9 Posted August 12, 2009 Wings of War was great, I really enjoyed the story and the humor in it with the drunken British pilot (what was his name?) The CO reprimands and congratulations,, and you could cut him short with a key stroke. And lest we not forget, Lissette.. what a shame, I really was in love with her too. The ambulance in RedBaron, when you returned wounded would be very cool to have the equivalent in OFF, if possible?
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 12, 2009 Would it be too late to have a pilot in each plane we fly?
