My quest to find a new (or newer) car...

  1. 1. Which car should I get?

  2. 2. Do you think I'm crazy?

Recommended Posts

So, I've examined my monthly income and how much I keep after taxes and bills and have found that I can easily afford in buying a new or newer car. Infact, once my promotion goes through, I can afford in buying a really, really nice new or newer car. Something that I thought I would never been able to purcahse until I'm in my 50's. So... my targets have been so far a 2006 - 2007 Chevrolete Corvette Z-06 or a 2006 Dodge Viper. Now, I know a lot of you might think I'm crazy for buying such a car. Howevr, you would be surprised how low the prices are on these cars right now. The owners who had bought them can't afford them anymore or have lost their jobs and need to get rid of them fast to get some money back (I just love it when the economy goes down the toilet when you have job security with the federal government). So, my dilema is deciding if I should get a Viper or a Z-06. So far, I've found a 06 Viper SRT-10 coupe with under 15,800 miles and a 06 Z-06 with around 15,500 miles both going for $44,000. I don't know which one to go for. So, I have this pole here for you guys to help me out... and also another one setup to see if I need mental help.

Too many Challengers at the base, and the new Camaro is becoming the latest fad there. Seen a couple Z-06s. Have only seen 1 Viper... once... and that was several years ago.

I just almost went in on getting an 09 Lingenfelter Z-06 that some lady was selling for $37,000 with only 1500 miles! The car usually goes for $90,000. She got it out of a divorce and wants to sell it quick. Later I found out that she and the car are in Rhode Island.

Do you just plan to use either car as an occasional toy, or do you plan on doing some sort of motorsport with it (i.e. autocross, drags, track days, etc.)?

Cruiser = Viper (or just get a regular Corvette)

Sunday racer = Corvette Z06

Go with the Viper, more exotic than the vette.

Guys i really envy you since you have all the means to get the almighty MOOSTANG in all it's colors, flavors, and odors but the 06 is not a bad election either...

I don't race. 1.)It costs a lot of money to really go out and race those cars and 2.)It adds un-necessary wear and tear to a vehicle that should be treated with such better care and would add on to maintenance costs in the long run.

If you're looking for a durable, trustable car, i would go with te Z06, though the Viper has a hell of an engine, it isn't very economic as the Z06 is...

i'd go with the Z06, though i find the Viper just gorgeous...

I voted for the Viper, simply because it has a more "muscular look" and as you said it yourself, since you're not intending to race, and having it at the base, makes you stand out of the crowd. :good:

And no, I don't think you're crazy. Heck, you only live this life once, so if you can, why shouldn't you indulge yourself a little? I'd consider it as your gift to yourself to becoming an NCO... Gz for that btw!

Doesn't the Viper have crap for features, though? Basically an engine with wheels, seats, and controls to drive it? Certainly not the kind of car I'd want to spend more than an hour or 2 a week in.

This is true. The Z-06 has a HUD, push start button instead of an ignition key, heated leather seats, On Star, a MFD in the center console, GPS tracking, and keyless entry. Viper only has keyless entry and badass looks. The Z-06 is comparable to the F-22 while the Viper is comparable to the F-14. Both awesome aircrafts and equally desirable.

Meh, on the looks issue: F-14 > F-22. And curiously Viper > Z06 as well, in terms of looks, IMHO. I guess it's an "either or" question. You can either be comfy or you can be badass. Not both at the same time. And I'd choose bad-ass.

Whichever one which will allow to keep your driver's license the longest. So off-hand I'd say get the vette, as the Viper bekkons "Try ME"and my V-10

As cost of ownership is obviously not a problem, why such cheap aim. Get the Bugati, and be done with it

I never saw the Logic on comparing an auto that can do 180mph verses another that can go 215mph, with the speed limit at 65mph ( in the USA, anyway )

Or Discover what True Speed Really is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpQP4v_Z0nQ

A Bugatti... right...

I just happen to not have a lot of expenses to pay and got a lot left over to play with. I'm not bringing in the dough like Tom Cruise does. There are a lot more people in my unit that make a hell of a lot more than me. Infact, one guy in our unit can easily come rolling onto base in a brand new Ferrari, but doesn't. It just boils down to what your monthly expenses are and your dependents. I don't have any dependents, but can claim one on my tax forms. I don't go out and party, don't have a girlfriend (anymore - thank goodness), I don't have a smoking habit to maintain, I'm not a big time drinker, and I don't waste money on stupid things like fancy clothes and narly tattoos - which happens to be what a lot of the guys at work invest in. I probably should be saving up to buy a house, but I really don't see myself living in one unless I get married, which I doubt will happen within the next 5 years. So right now, I'm quite comfortable in my cheap apartment and my limited assortment of clothes. Besides, that's what birthdays and Christmas are for, right?

I'm now retired from many years of getting a rather large paycheck. And I must admit I squandered much of it, on cars, boats, and part ownership in an antique aircraft, it helps if you're Not a clothes horse, and are satisfied with 8 year old Bourbon and Buds. By all means buy the vette and enjoy it fully.

But give serious consideration to buying a house, best idea is buy a small one, with a small apartment included. You'll live in the apartment, and Rent out the major portion of the house. The Tax benifits alone will be amazing, and you'll enjoy ridiculously low rent.

Banks are for idiots, in this economy stocks are very chancey, but Real Estate is a sound investment in the Future. . . . your Future good.gif

My thing is, I don't want to deal with renting a house out to someone. This is the same recomendation that I got from everybody that I work with. To me, it's too much of a hasle. I'm not big on the idea of being somebody's landlord. So that's why I stay with just an apartment and enjoy the simpler things in life... like combat sims!

MOPAR OR NOCAR!

I'm obviously a MOPAR fan...and voted VIPER. I've spoke with the SRT team last year, and plan to meet them this year in OH for a great MOPAR Event. These guys are doing some incredible work and although the Vette is cute, everyone has one....Z06 or not. If you want to compare them...get a ZR1..otherwise the Z06 isn't much of a comparison.

The Viper will set you apart from everyone else.

Only problem with getting a ZR1 is that it cost over $100,000.00 and there aren't any used ones out there yet... and even if there were, they would no where get close to the price range in which I'm limiting myself at... I almost got lucky with that 2009 Linginfelter packaged Z-06. Too bad it was in Rhode Island.

Here's the link to the Viper that I might be getting... It says it's posted for 49,995, but I spoke with the sales man and they said they would be very happy to lower the price for a military member. Possibly be getting it around $44-45,000.00

Corvette vs Viper? Since there is no practical side here I guess the only possible answer is: whichever you like better.

We had an Airman at Hurlburt Field that bought a new Vette. It was beautiful. And it looked great sitting in the parking lot for 3 weeks out of the month. He could only afford to drive it 1 week after insurance, gas, and any other bills.

I have decided to go with the Z-06. I just heard from an "inside" source that Chrysler is on the verge of collapsing completely. That means if that company goes under, then I would be SOL if I need replacement parts for a Viper. Apparently they got hit hard from the recession and I guess they have been struggling to make due with paying up to their contracting companies that manufacture the parts for them. I know GM has had it's share of troubles too with the closing of Pontiac and Saturn, but according to my source, it won't be just one division of Chrysler that will fall, but the whole company. This isn't a gurantee, but the possiblity of it happening is very high. Besides, replacement parts for a Z-06 are cheaper and easier to come by since there are more of them out on the road.

The Viper Club of America is in the process of buying all the factory replacement parts for the Viper from Fiatsler. Chrysler is discontinuing the Viper soon, irregardless of their financial shape.

Anyways, congrats on the Z06!
