Interestingly enough, here's a direct quote from some chap (Jason) over at RoF. It more or less expresses his attitude with regard to the smaller flight-sim/combat flight-sim development community in general...

"What we need is support from the community at large, no matter who your favorite developer is or what you like or don’t like about our products, ALL flight sims (assuming the product works halfway okay) deserve your support. The number of serious sim developers can be counted on one hand. The big publishers don’t give a rip about flight sims and the big retailers really don’t care either. This community is small enough to where we need to support each other. Combat flight sims are the most difficult kind of PC title to make, and it enjoys the smallest market share, the math doesn’t add up does it? Be kind to your fellow simmer and sim maker, the sim you save may just be your favorite."

Frankly, I think it's an attitude that could be of benefit to everyone.....developers, modders, enthusuiasts in general, and end-users alike. Admirable to say the least...

Cheers,

Parky

Yes, I agree, especially when they are obviously trying to produce a real sim, not just an ardade spin off with pretty graphics like Wings of Prey turned into, though I enjoy it too and bought it.

With limited funds I will support ROF and OFF, as I think they are both heading in the right direction and I respect what they are doing.

Sorry PD, didn't mean to stray off subject, but obviously, from what Winder said, OFF isn't merging with CK and the subject just wandered over to what other posibilities there were, like ROF, and then to the general subject of support of WWI sims that we are most impressed with. There didn't seem much else to say about the rummor about OFF and CK, is there?

Yes, well I agree with the overall feeling on this, but,and it is a big but, the most important but - for me -

When flight sim developers make it compulsory to go online to fly their sims, that's when I don't support them.

That's why ROF doesn't get bought by me, and it's the only reason i won't buy it, cos it looks great.

And any future sims which go the same route as ROF will not get played by me.

There has been much debate about the rights and wrongs of online requirement, and there's no need to engage in that here,

but there must be many who think as i do, and so the flight sim sales will be all the fewer as a result.

Jason should know that, and probably does. IMHO devs should take it onboard.

.

I was under the impression that RoF had gotten rid of the online requirement to fly in their most recent release. Also, I completely agree about the work being done towards the improvement and creation of any and all WWI flight sims as being very good work, regardless of who is doing it. As previously mentioned here, just imagine if all this talent could work together on a single combined effort. Wowzers!

Hi, PD,

Not doubtful at all. Their website featured beacoup screenshots of their airplanes in various stages of construction, from early shapes without textures to what they said were finished planes. This is how I saw the carburetor air intake "exhaust stains" I referenced earlier.

Jason's opinion as quoted by Parky is great!

If only the sim makers would also follow it, instead of spying out their competitors or copying their work.

In the end, the sim with the best look, most realistic campaign and the deepest immersion will get my money.

This is going all over the place. We have always said a similar thing to Jason - there's room for more sims on people's hard drives no need to be a "super fan" of only one, that's nuts. If you can afford it buy all that try to provide what you like. We need support to carry on. Doing it because we think it's good doesn't pay for our food. For the normal dross of games I agree with Matt but for those specialised areas like ours were a few people try to make good software best they can then it's different.

No sim will provide ALL things to all people, there are too many personal preferences out there so the more the merrier. It IS a smaller industry than some games with a smaller market and it costs an awful lot in developer time to make too, totally counter productive to actually making enough money to make the extraordinary effort worth it.

true Sir Mike,

but Winder has complete control of the kitchen.....

Hey there Widowmaker,

it would be a godsend for the multiplayer crowd....

nothing can touch this for offline where i assume the majority of people are....

so each to his own....may everyone have the time of their life no matter what sim they are useing....

PD

Yeah, I totally agree with you PD.

Although I play FPS games online, I have never been a fan of Sims online (no idea why)..just how it is for me!

Good to hear Canvas Knights is still being worked on..I was a big fan once I saw it

IF, by some crazy (and I mean CRAZY) twist of fate, the OFF "franchise" were to merge with any other WWI sim, if it were feasible, RoF would be the one for my money. I'm fully aware that the prospect of that happening could be compared to Earth sending a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri, so I'll enjoy the "you know what" out of the flight sims I have now while waiting patiently for P4. I haven't even discovered a fraction of the OFF world yet, so, take your time guys! No hurry!
