First Medal of Honor for a living Afghan war vet

Recommended Posts

Glad to see a hero wasn´t paid with dead by destiny. Others died, like USN Lt Michael Murphy in ambushes, or stopping grenade sharpnel with ther bodies. It´s a fair, but not enough, reward that after such behaviour you can stay living. About the grenade thing, there are some others who did so. A Marine in Iwo Jima, 16 years old, survived his wounds and was awarded the Navy Cross. Lt Baldomero López, USMC, did something simmilar in the landing of Incheon. (López is the guy on the famous photo, from a LCI, the one on top of the ladder)

this is outstanding tho the things a living recipient would go thru they wouldn't want to talk about it.

I've read the stats for Iwo Jima. Seven of the thirteen posthumous awards of the MoH to Marines there were granted for the same feat : throwing themselves on grenades to protect their fellows. Only one more received it still alive, crippled. Something of a miracle. Accidentally, seven to one seems to be the same rating today.

But no medal will ever match the life-long personal gratitude from the buddies whose young lives have been saved by these braves. Bad luck here for the boy Giunta tried to save. :salute:
