serverandenforcer 33 Posted December 8, 2010 Now just imagine being underneath that thing near the runway when it's coming into land. I got to do that when I was at Gulfport a couple years ago.
+daddyairplanes 10,243 Posted December 8, 2010 they can move fast tho when they wanna, like the time i say one take off right at the start of a mortar attack. heard later the tower told him to hold and the pilot said F@<* youuuuuu......................... and away they went. Lexx_Luthor 57 Posted December 8, 2010 pfft They used to do it with slide rules. I love the way 99 turns to the runway for takeoff and the once glorious California sun shines off the pure metal fuselage -- they can't do that anymore.
Skyviper 1,101 Posted December 8, 2010 Now just imagine being underneath that thing near the runway when it's coming into land. I got to do that when I was at Gulfport a couple years ago. Wow. The rumbling ground beneath your feet...the entense roar of those engines...I can only imagine. Truely amazing...so improper question here...what about the brown pants factor? I saw this thing at an airshow and it made the B-52 look tiny. Then I stood under the nose that was raised up and looked at the cocpit that looked so tiny and thought "they don't fly the plane...it flies them"(I know I'm probably wrong about that)

LOL I'm kinda wondering what happened to the pilot. I mean you can't blame the pilot because that thing was probably the target everyone was wanting to hit. And for the XC-99 that plane reminded me of the bomber that props behind its wings like that...well the props, the jets, and the JATO...I would like to see that plane next to the C-
FastCargo 412 Posted December 8, 2010 The XC-99 should have reminded you of the B-36...it was derived from it. I used to see it all the time at Kelly AFB slowly falling apart after it was retired. FC

FC B-36 yup that's the one. So is the B-36 bigger than the C-5?

Viggen 644 Posted December 8, 2010 Got any pictures of it or any other aircraft waiting for restoration, Dave?
ezlead 42 Posted December 9, 2010 I rode on a C-5 from Okinawa to Guam. We went up the front boarding stairs into the aircraft and then walked down the catwalk back to the stairs leading up to the passenger compartment. It was full of jet engines in their shipping cans. There had to be over 50 of them. I have walked into hangars that looked smaller than that thing. The power it had when they poured the cobs to it for take-off was really unbelievable.
