+Monty CZ Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 (edited) I was thinking about my next RC model and then this idea came to me: What if we would build plane similar to XF5U-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_XF5U) with technologies we have now. And here it is: powered with 2 turbo-prop engines (on lower speed there is some thrust vectoring used) speed range 60-600kmph manned and unmanned version 2 bombbays, gyro stabilized cameras and laser under the belly what do you think? mdatelmi Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Mmmm... interesting... Just a little "hint"...I think that the rudders should be more "actual"...not straight but angled and increased...and the stabs the same modern look with some negative dihedron...the props caps a bit more pointed. Just my cents... Quote
FastCargo Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Well, it wouldn't be stealthy in the modern sense, but would make a good carrier based long duration aircraft...maybe a good sub hunter. FC Quote
+Monty CZ Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 It is not supposed to be stealthy because of those two biiiggg props, I only tried to use the design similar to the Predators or Reapers (UAVs). Size of the rudders and stabs is similar to the XF5U ones and I read that it was very effective thanks to the constant propwash even on slow speed. And the role for that plane? CAS, LGB delivery (all future munition would be smart wouldnt it?), RECON/Armed Recon...etc. Dont know if aerial refueling would be possible with this configuration :-) Monty CZ Quote
EricJ Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 You'd have to make the refuelling probe like the CH-53 which allowed the aircraft to refuel despite the huge rotor it had. And yeah there would probably precision munitions so an LGB/CAS role could come about. Quote
Wrench Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 AFR doors aft of the cockpit (ala Phantoms)? or like EricJ said, an long probe (extendable?) coming out from nose/fuselage/cockpit region Neat idea!! wrench kevin stein Quote
+Julhelm Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 How about rotating gun/micro missile turret like on the BAe SABA concepts? Also, the XFU5-1 had integrated footsteps all along the spine for crew entry. Quote
FrankD Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 What about a photovoltaic module covering the whole upper side of the fuselage ala Helios? Quote
+Monty CZ Posted February 13, 2011 Author Posted February 13, 2011 Julhelm minigun turret was tried on OV-10 Bronco but I dont think it is good idea flying low and slow while angle of attack is more than 20° is not the best way to support your troops :-) I can imagine 30mm fixed cannon instead :-D FrankD you are kidding me! right? :-) this plane has wingspan about 8meters, the same lenght, so the maximum power you could get from photovoltaic pannels is about 110kW in absolutely sunny day...my bike has more :-) You are not supposed to think green here! :-) Wrench: I believe that AFR doors would work Monty CZ Quote

+daddyairplanes Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 What an ugly "Flying Pancake", looks like a jumping toad The best weapon for this monster is self appearance you mean like the X-32 prototype? Quote
JediMaster Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 You've got the wrong service. The USN wouldn't want this thing, but the USMC would love it! It's a one-Marine mini-AV-22! While the Harrier and F-35B will get to the target area fast, they don't have that persistence and low speed that make CAS more effective. Stealth doesn't matter in that regime, you just need agility, firepower, and the ability to defeat MANPADs and other short-range IRH SAMs. The USN went and retired perfectly good S-3Bs because they weren't interested in ASW being carrier-based at that range anymore I guess. I can't see them caring to get these. Quote
+Monty CZ Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 I made one ugly nose insteady of that pointed and aerodynamical, because I need to place sensors somewhere and that cannon needs to be fitted somewhere too :-) It just cant fire unguided rockets :-( Monty CZ Quote
EricJ Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 That's okay CAS can be just as effective with unguided or guided bombs Quote
+Julhelm Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 How about fitting rocket pods on the centerline? Also I think it'd look much cooler if you put a longer-barreled gun on it, such as the 3-barrel one used on the Cobra. Now that I think of it a curved canopy like on the Whiskey Cobra would look cooler than the stepped one IMO. Quote
+Monty CZ Posted February 27, 2011 Author Posted February 27, 2011 Julhelm as you can see from this point of view it is not so easy I dont want to affect that Lantrin thing on the left side (I designed it retractable) on the right side is cannon (not too long barreled because of the previous point) under the belly is 2 bombays and 2 exhausts from the engine 1st stage compressor for some aditional lift on slow speed. I think there is place for 2 external weapon stations for bombs or missiles with delayed ignition :-) Monty CZ Quote
EricJ Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Yeah I see them too, just to the insides of the main landing gear. Quote

Do you have "Active@ File Recovery" software? Might able to salvage it.. Just a thought. If not look around at the following address: http://www.file-recovery.net/download.htm L Quote
+Monty CZ Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Unfortunate... Do you have "Active@ File Recovery" software? Might able to salvage it.. Just a thought. If not look around at the following address: http://www.file-recovery.net/download.htm L Thanx for the support I will look at it. I saved the file but with 3DS still open, left the computer for a while It was in sleep mode and wont start correctly...it said something that system need to be repaired (blah blah) and after that 3DS said that file cannot be open and my ini work wasnt saved either. I was "x%!&@{" !!!! because I lost 80% of UVW mapping with textures already done, animations, hierarchy etc etc. I dont like Win7 ! but maybe I will start again, because this concept is weird enough :-) Monty CZ Quote
+Julhelm Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Check the autoback folder in documents/3dsmax. Max autosaves 3 copies of the last file you were working on. Has saved me many times. Quote
FastCargo Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Yea...for a program that is a standard of the industry, it sure can be buggy at times. I've got mine set to save 5 previous copies at 5 minute intervals. FC Quote

Julhelm you saved me few hours of my life!!!! thanx a lot the oldest autoback was file just before I mirrored all the components the others two were from time I checked older files...ufff I am glad that I didnt open anthing else :-) It gave me the idea for the name: Phoenix, what should be the code? (it is not supposed to be an american aircraft :-)) Monty CZ Edited March 7, 2011 by Monty CZ Quote
Wrench Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 oh, I sooooo glad that it got saved! It's too cool to loose! For which nation/service? That'll help determine 'model type' number wrench kevin stein Quote
