@ Gepard , why do some R-23 Missiles and the Training missiles have this small fins direct in front of the main wing and other R-23 Missiles dont have them  ????

Do you mean the small fins close to the seeker head?

This are "Destabilisatoren", vortex generators to get a better airflow over the main "wings" to the maneuver fins at the end of the missile.

Newer seen that before. Dont know what they good for. In LSK such fins were not on the missiles.

From what Air Force is the picture? Could it be romanian? IIRC Romania built R-23 missiles in license. Maybe they modified it?

Will check tomorrow in my book, it describes several R23 variants, maybe that's explained as well.

The training missiles have them as those are the forward fitting points of the wings on the live ones, on those the 'motor" section is replaced by either instruments or just ballast weights. The one on your pic is some sort of hybrid, as the motor section seem to be shorter - that appearance probably coming from the differently mounted wings position.

The fully winged ones with the black stripes (airshows and static display items) - if I know correctly - are dummies or ballast versions so practice flights are more realistic for wight load but not using up the 'live' missile's carry hours.

I think Logan is right, my book does't show them on any of the schemes or talk about those little wings.

Thanks for the Info ,  i still have one question about the dimensions of this R23 missiles in russian net sides the dimensions are

  • R-23R  length   4,46 m
  • R-23T  length   4,16 m
  • Diameter 200 mm for both missiles

in the western media the dimensions are

  • R-23R  length   4,5 m
  • R-23T  length   4,2 m
  • Diameter 223 mm for both missiles

especially the diameter is confusing me a bit , for the length i go with the russians

anybody who knows the exact Diameter  ????  or is the diameter 200 mm for the Missile Body without the cable trays  and the diameter 223 mm with cable trays  ????

Svetlin is right. Can confirm from east german sources

R-23R  has diameter 200 mm and lenght 4.460 mm

BTW: the MiG-23 pilot has answered. He wrote, that the training missile was called "R-23 Schreiberrakete", the official soviet designation was not used and so he had forgotten it.

Nice pictures. Its real a training round. The red letters stands for "utschebno dejstwojuscheji", what means "training object" or "training device"
