If you look closely at Mustang in the Foreground, mounted dorsally behind the normally included antenna you should note the inclusion of a directional loop antenna. Other pics have the loop installed on other CBI/PTO 'Stangs. Its unusual but I believe had downloaded files where a pic in the 'outer' opackage had the mod, but inside the pack at the 'plane level the 'loadnig' or 'hanger' screen (of the same plane) does not have the loop. Obviously, the pic could be 'modded.' Maybe the fake pilot method was utilized.

If anyone could clear up the mystery, thanks. An double thnks if you know how to get this mod.

I finally bit the bullet and got me some YAP. I wanted to fly from le Shima escorting the YAP B-29 to the home islands with skinned TW P-51D/Ks etc5f343d260acb0_71stTRG.thumb.JPG.10ff960bb1237c671288e7bf0151f0ca.JPG

Raven, iirc, did the loop for me for CBI Warhawks. It's added via fake pilot.

Is this fakepilot directional antenna thing on combatace?

I suppose the 'Uncle Dog' beam riding directional antenna is a non-starter

Since it was originally for the AAF CBI Jugs, looking in the downloads section, one can find this:

you can throw out the rest, all you'll need is the adf nm and fake pilot folders in the /Objects/Pilots folder.

and you should thank Russ for building it, and reminding me what I did with it!! (some other people don't seem to do that anymore)

OUt of curiosity, why YAP map?? They're terrains are fucking horrible! There's one here (Okinawa) that has much more detail, even if it has numerous flaws. At least the cities have things to bomb, and stuff is actually IN (or very close to) Real Life (tm) locations. Given the game and terrain engines limitations

What map are you talking about?

I do believe I have combatace 'Okinawa.'   What I'm Interested in terrain-wise  is the island of Le Shima off Okinawa. I seem to remember having a problem. Could have crashed or populated tiles like crazy. Will try it again. I just looked at the map though and Le Shima is there. Motivation.

I also decided to try YAP as I wanted to check out the YAP cockpits and a few planes I was hoping to add or replace. I like his version of the P-51B and P-39D. The P-38s are good as are some bombers. The TW P-5D and cockpit with the plethera of combatace skins trump's YAP.  I like some of the YAP jap planes too. Some stuff isn't as good as others true. Oh, I have dumped all necessary files into the subfolders of my WWII Install, but in 'OBJECTS' have 3 folders named AIRCRAT.ETO, AIRCRAFT.PTO, & AIRCRAFT.YAP.  A simple rename before launching is all that is needed.  Will prob combine the PTO CBI YAP planes at some point.

Back to terrains: Mustangs over the Philippines and hitting Japan from Okinawa (+ Le Shima) while escorting B-29s has been interesting for a long time to me.  Cool paint.  Oh, flying from Iwo Jima to Japan though, that's scary.

Thank you for the loop antenna. Historical eye candy but sublime!

There is a small island next to Okinawa called Le Shima. Mustangs flew from there to Japan. It is on the combatAce Okinawa Planning map. Dont think I tried to start a plane from there in the combatace Okinawa terrain though. But, I have done so with the YAP Okinawa terrain. The YAP terrain is acceptable to me but not all the way up to modern standards. I think most of it was built several years ago by a small team. Kinda rushed.

Could use some green hell.

the one that's here was rebuilt by me. so, you know what to expect. I'm very sure theirs is based of the same inaccurate one by Edward from around 2005, and probably stripped out.

Given what I've seen, especially in their Persian Gulf terrain -the same one that's here by Gepard and stolen -let's call a spade a space- and used without permission, has NOTHING on it. While my rebuild, well...you see the point. All in all, they don't have a good reputation. Some of their models are good, even passable. But they're all optimized for the 1stGen 06 patch level. All need extensive work to get them "sf2 ready".

Ie Shima is there on my rebuild - I should know, I put it there. Along with the anchorage at Karama Retto.

The Pacific War is my thing -- most of my family was there (well, perevious generation)

Yeah, i adjusted the position on the loop and it's cool. I checked what documentation as per a previous comment and indeed the CBI Allied Fighters appear to be the main or only fighters sporting loop antennae. I probably read that in the past or noticed the situation in mustang pics as it seemed familiar. Oh, should the loop be silver or black. I haven't noticed that before, but they appear black in my book. Even my Airfix 1/48 P-51 show it as black.  I'll post a pic a later.

That's interesting you have family that served in the Pacific. Rough duty to be sure. Images on the screen can't do it justice.

Hey, uuh... I haven't been using the YAP Okinawa/Japan. I've using yours. The YAP one doesn't load right, on my machine anyway. When I get to Japan its messed up.

I attach some pics with the loop.   Incidently I just figured out why I can sometimes take screenshots and other times not. If I use the "Cntrl-'H'" feature before taking a PrtScn it won't work. I didn't try turning off the HUD data from the 'Options' Screen yet.

I am purplexed as why some planes get the Camera lenses on the fuselage and some Mustangs don't.

Pal, I'm sad to say that only those CBI Mustangs carried this ADF antenna.

Yep.

Iwo based use a double vertical antenna (also seen on P-47Ns), and a "thingy" inside the canopy

and the "camera lens" equipped versions would be F-6s. They're NOT P-51s

Are you saying  'AircraftShortName=F-6K Recce Mustang'  and/or  'AircraftFullName=F-6K-10-NT' has to be in the  'AirCraftName.ini'  to trigger the lenses to show up? That's kinda cool.

Yep will go back & remove F-6 from the appropriate files and comment out the loop from the non-CBI planes.  Do you think a tactical Recon Group or squadron would have both camera laden and non-photographic Mustangs? I think the did so.

I found where the recce lenses are located. In the decals.

Man my troubleshooting skills have eroded with all this idle-sitting preying for a vaccine.

I probably came across this back in the day, but had forgotten. For much of my life I was into fighter aircraft or my favorite was fighters. I was interested other types as well. In about 1990 I bought my first computer and the race was on. I bought a flight sim ASAP and soon started to shoot virtual planes down. (After much trying.)  Anyway, more recently I've developed an interest the F-6 and photo recon in general.

You probably read an account of a pair of F-6 Mustangs shooting down several planes then proceeding to take pictures of the smoking wrecks. Confirmed! (street-cred maximized)  Also, it is well documented that the  reconnaissance photos are invaluable to military planning. Very important missions.

Hey, I have not tried  the  recon mission in SF2. Time to try that.

Oh, what was all this about?  I have a pic of the 110th TRS, 71st TRG Mustang with no cameras on the left side. I may have even read that all the fighters in a TRS did not have cameras. I guess the  provided top cover. Sounds like SF2 mission editor time again.

Little known is the fact that F-6D/K had this wing markings to aid the photographs.

actually, those are for dive bombing. Get a copy of Osprey's "Very Long Range P-51 Mustang Units of the Pacific War".

Wrench, you confused the markings. The dive bombing ones were these:

They were pretty much different.:good:

I saw the dive bombing markings before (and still not sure how they were used).  Not sure I've seen the photo recce markings before.  I have the VLR book so can give it a look.

I found the recon stripes on Kagero P-51 (vol?) and on NET. With some keen eyes and good photos you'll see those markings. Only on left wing.

There is not much data, but I liked the final futuristic model of the P-51 inverted arrow wings, so now almost finished I present it to you
for the moment with the fictional skin of the Korean War
I named it P-51V because of the shape of the wings.

      Dear Friends,
Good news today - one of the most experienced campaign designers James =Jaegermeister= Yarbrough has finished his new creation, a brand new campaign called Overlord, just in time for us to try and include it in the update coming out next week.
This means that if the testing goes well, the 5.107 update will have something nice for everyone: the La-5F Soviet fighter for Eastern Front scenarios and multiplayer, two additional Flying Circus Vol.III Early Access aircraft, Hanriot HD.1 and Niueport 17 GBR, for the Great War gentlemen, and if you prefer the late WWII Western Front, this excellent historical campaign will be right up your alley.

Here's what the author has to say about his latest effort.
The 354th Fighter Group, commonly referred to as the "Pioneer Mustang Group," was the first USAAF unit to be equipped with the new P-51B/C Mustang during WWII and to see combat in Europe. They flew long-range escort missions over the English Channel with the 8th Air Force's heavy bombers in the months leading up to D-Day. As final preparations were made for the invasion of Normandy, the 354th Fighter Group was reassigned to the IX Tactical Air Command and committed to direct support of the ground troops going ashore. The 354th flew escort for C-47s dropping paratroopers and towing gliders on D-Day.
Your role in this campaign begins as a replacement pilot arriving with the 354th Fighter Group on D-Day and assigned to the 356th “Red Ass” Squadron under the command of Major Richard Turner. In mid-June 1944 the Pioneer Mustangs flew strike missions across the English Channel from ALG Lashenden during the first V-1 rocket attacks on London and were directly in the path of the “Doodlebugs” as they headed towards their intended targets. They moved to ALG-2 at Criqueville in late June where they flew ground attack, search and rescue, fighter-bomber escort, and fighter sweep missions during all the major battles of Operation Overlord. After the Allied breakout at Saint-Lô, the 354th FG was reassigned to the new XIX Tactical Air Command and moved east with Patton’s 3rd US Army through Paris and eventually into Germany. Due to the hectic flight schedule and squadron reorganization, you will move up from wingman to element leader and finish the campaign as a flight leader.

This is a historically based campaign depicting real events, however, the number of planes and specific squadrons involved in the missions have been altered slightly, and some event locations have been moved for improved gameplay.
We hope you'll enjoy the campaign, new aircraft, career mode additions, and all the other improvements in the upcoming update. It's just around the corner!

I'm doing a Pacific World War 2 install, and i kind of wanted to do it in the old school hard way (without HUDs). The instrument gauges are a bit problematic since some world war 2 cockpits have lower details in them so they are hard to spot but the even harder bit is actually locating the enemy aircraft since there are no search radars to compensate for the lack of HUDs.

I always call the tactical air control center and ask then the location of nearby bandits every few dozen nautical miles but they just always give me the all-clear (even at the mission waypoint) so I try to manually locate enemies but still just spend minutes circling round and round without action. (having read a few books, i know this is actually quite realistic, world war 2 wise but meh )

I'm just curious how do you guys do it? am i missing something? please share some bits to me as I am a Sukhoi Flanker dude who's having way too much fun flying P-40s and Zeroes.

      Hello P-51 Lovers!

We know you’ve been waiting patiently to see more of the P-51B, so today we show you what it looks like both inside and out! This new ‘Pony’ should be ready by the end of this month. It’s the Holiday Season and a time for giving, so there will likely be two updates in December! One with the new clouds and the DFWC.V and the other with the P-51B and maybe, just maybe new fuel systems and drop tanks for several Bf-109 variants. Of course, plans are subject to change pending testing. And as mentioned previously the Malcolm Hood has taken extra work to get it right, so that component is not ready to be shown yet. Without further delay…

      Enjoy!
