Aircraft guns penetration against Cold War armor?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know If mid cold war tanks like the M-47 or the M-48, T-55, T-62, etc can be penetrated by aircraft guns like the Crusader Colts or the MiG-21 GSh-23?

Thanks.

You can destroy these tanks with the listed weapons but it takes a lot of hits to the rear quarter to do it. Attacks from the front are far less effective.

Weapon tests showed, that the GSh-23 was to weak against tanks or AFV. Thatswhy the GSh-30-6 was developed and this was a beast, especially when used with the proper ammo.

I think the same is with western guns. Caliber 20 mm is to weak to do real harm.

there was some article about USAF test of A-10 against soviet armor, turns out that ammunition for GAU-8 had some problems with penetrating some armor areas at some angles. While it had no problems at near perpendicular angles, problems raised when trajectory changed against slanted areas on turrets, or front armor, I will try to look for that article.
