Landing while damaged
FastCargo replied to MaverickMike's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Amateurs! Hard mode everything (of course)...no magic invisible wheels... Actually, I've noticed landing with battle damage is very hit or miss (so to speak). For instance, a F-80 gave me a crash when I tried a belly landing due to losing all my gear. However, in reality , I would imagine it would be a fairly benign belly lander because of the low, wide wing and slower landing speed. Conversely, an F-105 probably shouldn't be an aircraft you would try to belly land because of the fairly high wing, and long, thin, round fuselage. You get slightly sideways on the skidout and you'd probably flip. And of course, in this particular situation as seen in the screenshot, most tricycle gear jets wouldn't even attempt something like this, especially the F-16 with the small ground 'triangle' for a fairly large aerodynamic planform. Campaign Weather
FastCargo replied to Panama Red's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=33571 This thread talks about a modification to a terrain which allows 4 seasons (depending on the time of year you fly). If you note closely, you can see in the data.ini of the terrain that you can also specify the probability of different kinds of weather for each season. So no, you cannot modify campaigns, however, if you modify the terrain data.ini, it is effectively the same thing. FastCargo -
INI / Mapping Problem
FastCargo replied to Timmy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
There is a reason...everything is to the same scale (except for some landing gear parts) and there is minimal breakup. Makes it easier to make things line up. Think that's bad...wait til you see the wing mapping. I'll take ease of skinning over pure efficiency any day. But like others have said, different strokes for different folks. FastCargo -
Just a thought on the rule of proportionality (ie what the right amount of force is). What proportionality really means is the proper amount of force used to get the job accomplished while minimizing the potential of collateral damage. In other words, if there is a AAA gun on top of a building, you don't use a nuke to take it out. However, there is nothing preventing using a larger weapon than needed if collaterial damage is minimal (or non-existent). At that point, using such a thing is usually a matter of munition effectiveness/availability/cost. Nothing prevents me from using a AC-130 to blow the crap out of a single person target if he's the only thing in 20 miles and that's the only thing I've got. FastCargo

Well, it depends on the engine and reason for the compressor stall. Here is a pretty concise definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compressor_stall Basically, I've seen everything from just a slight buzzing with an engine not running at full capacity to full blown banging with flames shooting out. I've never seen an engine blow up directly due to a compressor stall...usually if that happens, it's because something else was already present. From what I can tell, the TW sims don't model this. First, you didn't patch OVER your modded install did you? If you did...ouch. Second, you MUST have the newest version of the weapons editor. Otherwise, any weapondata.dat file you create will not work. Hey somebody, is there a sticky thread we can put up somewhere since this still comes up (don't want someone having to wade through 40 pages to look for that particular answer). FastCargo

F-15SG
FastCargo replied to Commander31's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Since it's sounds like a texture and ini edit only, it sounds like it's within your ability to try. We learn by doing. We look forward to your contribution. FastCargo -
Which is not the same as putting your throttles to idle. One can be considered throttle bursting, which can cause compressor stalls and flameouts. The other is used to control your airspeed, critical in making consistent bomb deliveries. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass how you make your weapon drops as long as they work...in the sim. It's a different thing altogether if come screaming across at mach snot, only to splatter yourself into a hill, or pull out too soon and don't get close enough to ensure a good drop, or try to threat manuver and realize you don't have enough nose track because you're way above corner speed or you over G or black yourself out trying to make that nose track. Anyone up for new menu screens?
FastCargo replied to guitarclassic55's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Very nice...really adds atmosphere to the sim. FastCargo -
Yes, there are wingtip tanks for the F-5s. There is a weapondata entry for the tanks, because the tanks are not symmetrical (ie there is a left and right one). The way it was done is that there is only one data entry, but it looks for 2 LOD files. You may want to check to see if that is the problem. Also, FYI, the current shape of the F-5 wing tanks are wrong. The current ones in the weaponspack are area ruled, but area ruled like a coke bottle. The real tanks are actually asymetrically area ruled...with the ruling done on the inner facing portion of the tank, but the outer facing portion is straight. The MF is already working on changing them to the correct shape. FastCargo

INI / Mapping Problem
FastCargo replied to Timmy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Well, how about mapping the vertical stab on the fuselage map...it would be a logical mapping if you have the room. Here's what I did on the F-111 tweaking... FastCargo -
Heh...(slightly embarassed cough). I forgot that in the campaign ini (not the data ini) you need to add the following lines: ServiceXXX=USN and [uSNUnitXXX] UnitName=VSF-3 'Chessmen' ForceID=1 UnitID=25 <---- Must match cooresponding [AirUnitXXX] number in Campaign data.ini StartDate=1962 DescFile=woe1Start.txt StartText=woe1Start1.txt AircraftType=A-4B The rest of the lines are self explanatory. You must do this for each service and unit you want to add. I just did it right now to verify it still works correctly for WOECamp1 to add a single A-4B unit. Try these files as an example. Bone stock except for the addition of the A-4B unit and CarrierUnit. You still will need to make the appropriate changes in the GermanyCE targets and nations ini files. You should end up with something like this: FastCargo

Like I said in the post above yours. Anyway, if you want to determine where to put stuff...use KMD to open up a planning map for the particular terrain. Then note when you move the cursor over the map, you'll see coordinates near the bottom right corner...note the coordinates when you get the cursor near where you want. Then use a variant of what Fubar just posted to make a new TargetArea in the targets.ini file of the terrain you want. Like I said. FastCargo
