F-102 cockpit alternative almost ready. I don't know if anyone will need it, if there will be a more dedicated cockpit option ,etc. It is based on the existing F-106 cockpit. Changed is that the tape gauges are gone, lots of new steam gauges are added, the radar has been reworked, bottom moving map eliminated, and the cockpit has been made a correct mostly gray motif as per F-102 color photos. I still need to ask permission to release it, if and whenever it might be needed by the community. According to the photos, it was really quite a plain cockpit.

Fantastic! It's time for some Viet Nam action! "The F-102 served in Vietnam, flying fighter patrols and serving as bomber escorts. A total of 15 aircraft were lost in Vietnam: one to air-to-air combat..." Wiki "It was during one of these missions that an F-102 was shot down by a North Vietnamese MiG-21 using an AA-2 Atoll heat-seeking missile. The MiGs approached undetected, and one of the F-102s was shot down. The other F-102 pilot managed to shoot off some AIM-4s at the fleeing MiG-21s, but no hits were recorded." Wiki "Interestingly enough, the F-102 became fairly heavily used in the air-to-ground role. The interceptor was equipped with 24 x 2.75-in FFARs in the fuselage bay doors, and these weapons were used to good effect against various types of North Vietnamese targets. Additionally, heat-seeking Falcon missiles used in conjunction with the F-102s nose-mounted IRST (Infrared Search & Track) were employed on night time harassment raids along the Ho Chi Minh trail. This is likely the only time an air-to-air missile has been used for air-to-ground operations." Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-102_Delta_Dagger On the cockpit: Someone could play with the F-106 cockpit to make a more F-102-ish temporary cockpit. They both have the same general layout as they were based on one another. -

A Cockpit mod of the Thirdwire Scooter's cockpit, to create the Cuban-modified Mig-19P working-radar cockpit for use in Wrench's Mig-19P (or any other radar-equipped Mig-19). Download Wrench's Mig-19P aircraft here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=5070 Referenced from multiple color photos, and cockpit layout diagrams. Instruments and placards moved, eliminated, repainted and painted from scratch. Individual instruments in Russian as they were historically. The Mig-19 series flew combat and reportedly got kills in the Viet Nam war, the Arab-Israeli wars and the Indo-Pakistani wars. This aircraft is the one that reportedly sparred with Gary Power's overflying U2. The Mig-19P could easily outclimb the F-4 Phantom at about 35,435 ft/min vs the F-4s 28,500 ft/min.* Top gun training showed that when flying the Mig-19/21, you can often go pure vertical at the merge and often defeat the F-4....or just outturn the F-4 in the deep stall buffet if the F-4 tries to turn slowly too.** What is different compared to my Mig-19S cockpit: 1. A radar display was added with correct range lines according to one diagram. 2. The cockpit panel is a dark blue per color photos. 3. The Mig-19P deleted one ammo counter between the pilot's legs as it was reduced to two NR-23 cannon to make way for the radar. 4.The Mig-19P also deleted one red gun arming switch because the Mig-19P only had two internal cannons. 5. Tens of other changes including instrument locations, instrument additions and color changes. For SFP1/WOV/WOE/WOI. *Thanks to Wrench for the Mig-19P and its Mig-17PFU avionics. *Thanks to Charles for permission to use some gauges from the Meteor (Fuel gage and graphics). *Thanks to Lexx_Luthor for massive help on relocating instruments. *Thanks to The Trooper for the photos and coding on making the ADI (artificial horizon work upside down...no mean feat!) *Thanks to Thirdwire and TK for their sim and some instruments. Complete credits and history in readme. Instructions: 1-Backup your files! 2.Add contents to the Mig-19P aircraft file. 3-When prompted, overwrite the files. More detailed instructions are included within. Just ask at the combatace forum if you have problems. Enjoy! *"The Illustrated Book of Fighters", Spick. pp.292 and 252. **"Scream of Eagles", Wilcox. pp.21-22. -

Speaking of Ranges...
ordway replied to Viper6's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Hmmm, that supposedly happened when two Mig-19s were trying to intercept Gary Power's U2 over the USSR. The Russians got both the U2 and the Russian wingman with separate SAMs. So I guess, it is accurate. -
Errr, blame the Russians. The "a, goi duk clam" avec des deux cercles rouges et une instrument pour des deux moteurs à réaction. When you explain "a, goi duk clam" to me, I'll explain "avec des deux cercles rouges et une instrument pour des deux moteurs à réaction." to you It was a twin-engine jet fighter with a radar as an afterthought. The instruments and radar are pretty close to where the docs show. The real-life airplane often had to be turned on with lighted rags being thrown into the exhaust...no joke (like in cross-wind conditions). The Russians basically just threw a radar into an already crowded cockpit. If you don't like it, make one of your own.

"One thing about the radar. The radar screen shows the RP-22MA. The Mig019P had a RP-1 Izumrud radar. So the radar screen should be all red." Can you show me a color picture of the RP-1 Izumrud radar. Hmmm, so it looks like this? http://www.sanko.wroclaw.pl/apt/mig-19/kon/radiolokator.html -

This looks great! -
Really nice. Thanks! One question, and it is probably me. In WOE, both with and without the Q-5 weapons installed, I don't get a gunsight reticle in the Q-5. Do you have any idea what might be going on? I do get reticles in the other aircraft. I rebooted WOE from scratch just to make sure it was not that. I also tried substituting the F-100 reticle and still it did not show up. Thanks.

A Cockpit mod of the Thirdwire Scooter's cockpit, to create the North Viet Nam-modified Mig-19S cockpit for use in the stock Thirdwire Mig-19S cockpit (or any other non-radar Mig-19). Referenced from multiple color photos, and cockpit layout diagrams. Instruments and placards moved, eliminated, repainted and painted from scratch. Individual instruments in Russian as they were historically. The Mig-19S was the Soviet Union's first supersonic fighter. It flew combat and reportedly got kills in the Viet Nam war, the Arab-Israeli wars and the Indo-Pakistani wars. The Mig-19S could easily outclimb the F-4 Phantom at 35,435 ft/min vs the F-4s 28,500 ft/min.* It also could out-accelerate the F-4 up to 465 knots.** Top gun training showed that when flying the Mig-19/21, you can often go pure vertical at the merge and often defeat the F-4....or just outturn the F-4 in the deep stall buffet with flaps down if the F-4 tries to turn slowly too.*** Features: 1. The exhaust gas temperature gauge (EGT) has the twin-engine version with two red circles in it. 2. The gunsight is changed to the square ASP 5N gunsight with a square crash pad. 3. The Russians added a distinctive six-light warning panel. 4. The Mig-19 added three ammo counters between the pilot's legs. 5. A large red and yellow landing gear handle was added. 6. Tactics on how to fight in the Mig-19. 1). Top gun training showed that when flying the Mig-19/21, you can often go pure vertical at the merge and often defeat the F-4..and of course the F-100. 2)...or just lower flaps and outturn the F-4 in the deep stall buffet if the F-4 tries to turn slowly too.* *"Scream of Eagles", Wilcox. pp.21-22.

<<2. Use lag-pursuit>> I find that I horizontally out turn Migs at 450+ knots (push them out) in an F-4. They bleed off airspeed trying to "cut the corner" and I simply end up on their tail after a few turns and gun them. This F-4 tactic was also in the Top Gun tactics book called Scream of Eagles. In other words "my turn rate exceeds their turn radius"...they can't turn as well at high speeds as I can and I force them to fight at my superior speed. Those two huge F-4 engines push the truck around faster then they can. Migs have pretty high airspeed bleed in tight turns be they the Mig-21 Delta or the sharply swept Mig-19. Remember, even the later versioned- F-86 Sabre is reputed to be able to out turn the Mig-15 in many cases at lower altitudes.
