Regarding targeting in Hard settings, I play with all the realism settings on hard except for visual targeting and HUD. I leave these on medium, and I think that's fair given the lack of complex targeting/navigational equipment and the fact that were limited to what we can see by our monitor resolution. Bridges and buildings can be visually targeted if they are the primary target for the mission. I think that's the only way to do it. Someon correct me if I'm wrong...

WOV and WOE Squadron List
malibu43 replied to malibu43's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
It's not the log I'm worried about, it's the time it takes to start and stop campaigns to find one for a certain plane, and then repeating it the next day when I want to fly a different plane or from a different base. I think it would take only as long to make the list as it would to look through all the squadrons in a campaign once, so it would be worth it. -
I was just curious if anyone had already posted somewhere a list of all the squadrons available in the different campaigns for the two games, which aircraft they fly, and where they're stationed. I find it annoying to have to "start" a campaign just to find out which aircraft I'll be flying and where I'm stationed. I think the first time I wanted to start an A-10 campaign, I had to "start" about 9 campaigns before I found one. If no one has done this yet, I'll extract the campaign files, put together the list, and post it here...

Tiles for WOE
malibu43 replied to malibu43's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I know this is slightly off topic from my original post, but is there anywhere to get Duece's WOV terrain while his site is down? -
Typhoid, thanks for your input. It is symetrically loaded most of the time, but I just read through the combat journal at Skyraider.org the other day, and it got me all inspired to try and loadout my skyraider with an accurate Sandy loadout. This seemd to usually include a mini-gun on one side, and either a fuel tank or flare pod on the other. Hence, my quest to loadout my plane like the picture in the first post... I'm not sure if in reality the tank and the mini-gun weighed in close together (I doubt it) or if the pilots adjusted for it in some other way...

I messed around with a bunch of different fuel tanks last night, and never really found one that looked right. Also, any stock loadouts that use fuel tanks on those stations call out the 300 gallon tank. So if I change the fuel tank for that station, then I have to start screwing with all the loadouts as well. (On a side note, is there a way to have two fuel tanks possible for a weapon station. I tried adding two to the fuel tank line and separating them by commas, but that didn't work...) I did, however, change the weapons grouping so I could load a different weapon on each of the inboard stations. I put a flare pod on opposite the minigun (which I believe is historically accurate as well...) and it gave it the asymetrical look I think I was looking for. I also found that if I ended up with more than 6 weapons stations, the 7th and above would not show up in the loadout screen. Is this a limitation of the game? It is interesting, though, that the installation screens for the razbam skyraiders, as well as several of the loading screens, show pictures of the player flyable aircraft with the what appear to be the 150 gal tanks loaded, as well as several other loadouts that are historically accurate, but not possible with the stock weapon data and grouping. Of course, it's not too difficult to modify the loadouts and all that, but I found it interesting that what you see isn't necissarily what you get... Wow, I seriously managed to derail my own thread, now, didn't I?

Do you know how long that one is? I think I tried that one, and it was about 2x longer than it should be. It looked pretty funny, if I'm remembering the right one... about 6m, I think. I think the tank would need to be in the 3-4 m length range. I can go through the tanks in the weapons editor later and just check all the lengths if no one can think of one without doing the same thing.

Yes, I did exactly that. But I was having trouble finding a drop tank to copy that uses a model that resembles the smaller drop tank used in the picture. The stock 300 gallon drop tank is pretty big, where as the tank that should be hung opposite the mini gun would be smaller. From what I've read, it was usually a 150 gallon tank... Do you know of a tank that exists that uses a model that would be a close match? (about the size of a napalm canister)

So since it seems like there's no way to fix with trim, I started experimenting with creating a new drop tank that uses an existing model, but weighs the correct amount so it balances with the mini-gun. The problem was that I was having trouble finding a droptank that uses a model that resembles the tank in the picture. Anyone know of a drop tank in the weapons pack that looks like a close match? Thanks!

So I've read here ( http://skyraider.org/hook/ordinfo.html#M-47A4 ) that the AN-M47 was dropped either retarded or armed depending on if it wanted to be used for smoke or incendiary purposes. Is that what the (incendiary) and (PWP) labels next to the weapon names in the loadout refere to? Also, the weapons pack has both A3 and A4 versions of the incendiary and PWP types. What is the difference between the A3 and A4? I checked the weapons delivery manual, but it didn't go into any details on the differences. Thanks!

Ok. So, I was able to update my graphics driver. It didn't fix the bright water on medium, but I was able to get better frame rates (or at least playable ~10 fps) with high water settings. So that settles that for now. Also, I found the cloudlayer.bmp's in the OTC flight folder and coppied them to my other install. Thant's all it took :) Thank you both for your help!

Ok. So it only happens for me on medium graphics with the water in OTC. If I switch to either low or high it doesn't happen. It also doesn't happen at all in WOV or WOE (even on medium). I heard somewhere there was a water effect that was added in OTC. Is that true? Maybe that's why it only happens in OTC... I don't think I have every updated the driver for my card. I don't even know if I can, since it's just an integrated card. I'll look into it. But for now, I'll just stick with medium, and if I know I'm doing something at night, I'll change the detail back to low. While I all your attention, I have one more question. The layer of clouds in inclement weather in OTC is different than the one in WOV/WOE. I have the skymod installed in WOV/WOE, and it looks like it uses the same tiles as OTC. How do I get the better cloud layer from OTC into the other parts of the series? OTC: WOV: Anyone know? Thanks!

I originally bought LOMAC last year, but found it wouldn't run on my laptop. I ended up buying WOE after that, so I could fly the F-15 and A-10, thinking that I was settling. Needless to say, I was wrong...

Different games to satisfy different cravings... I have the TW series for when I feel like some simple jet fun. Lot's of variety and covers a big time frame. I tend to play this one a lot after watching an episode of Dogfights... I have IL-2 1946 to get my WWII fix. I have F4AF for when I feel like getting technical.

Yup. I'm on medium. I did try a mission with water settings on high earlier to see if my 'ole Inspiron 2200 could handle it, but it was prior to this discussion, so I ran it during the day. The result was that it was not really playable. I'll try it again at night to see if it fixes the bright problem, but since I can't handle high settings, I'll just have to live with medium anyway... Thanks everyone.

Alright. I guess I'll play around with it more and see how much and when exactly it happens. I'm using a laptop with an integrated graphics card, and water set on medium, so there are probably some differences between what I see and what most others see. Maybe that all has something to do with it. If I ever figure it out, I'll post it. Thanks for all the help!

Agree. It's just Halo 2 with slightly better graphics. The mulitplayer levels aren't as good as the ones in Halo 2 either, in my opinion.
