An original letter from Lt. Schulte, Jasta 12
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yes, I see you all know and understand that feeling; thanks for posting. My - to imagine, he was killed only a month later (thank you, Shred) - Lotte Leuteritz may have never seen him again. Here is the Aerodrome link to his page. http://www.theaerodr...any/schulte.php "Das Kriegstagebuch der Jasta 12" about his end: "At 10.40 h Lt. Schulte shot down an F.E. near Rumaucourt. Ninth victory. In this air combat he collided with his opponent and crashed fatally." And additional Text by the author: "In the overall turmoil of this fight between the 18.Sqdn and Jasta 12, the FE2b (4995) with the crew Lt OT Walton and 2AM JC Walker, and the Albatros of Lt. Schulte collided. All three aviators died hereby." Maybe I did Lotte Leuteritz and the Pension Korfu wrong. Out of curiosity I googled the name of the Pension, and it still exists. And now I could even read the Sütterlin address on the envelope: Rankestrasse 26 The Pension Korfu still exists - at the same address. It is very close to the center of West-Berlin, and near the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial Church. A miracle almost, that it survived the heavy WW2 bombing right here in the center. This is how it looks today. -
Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Wonderful, cptroyce - some real information on that aircraft! -
Under this link, you will see many such items, among book titles; letters or postcards with the stamps of various Jasta. This example is from Lt. Schulte to Lotte Leuteritz, at "Pension Korfu" in Berlin W (West)* http://www.zvab.com/displayBookDetails.do?itemId=15227685&b=1 It may be silly, but it touches a sentimental string in me to find such handwritten items. *(Pension "Korfu" might have been a brothel - sounds a bit like that to me)

Well, it is the never ending debate: WHY did Voss take on the fight? From what I saw about the situation, I believe he had no other chance really. With 5 or 6 S.E.5a much higher, coming down on him, and those craft already being much faster than the Dr.1, even without that dive, he could only - go into a steep dive to escape - which wouldn't have got him very far - try to climb away from them (which is useles, as long as some S.E.5 would wait above) - or fight, which he did as maybe the best choice in such a turn devil His best chance would have been, to damage all craft enough, to be able to escape them, and maybe down one or two. Since all craft where hit, I think that is what he tried. A slim chance it was... -
Can Anyone recommend a good book?
Olham replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Just found this link - only one copy left; unfortunately no pic of the book: http://www.amazon.co...49&sr=1-1-fkmr0 Or what about this great photo calendar: Ghosts of the Great War: http://www.amazon.co...64633047&sr=8-4 oops - I see it's currently unavailable. -
I had a mid-air some time ago in my Albatros against a Nieuport. The Nupe crashed, while I had the left wingtip missing. Now, in an Albatros D III it is your big luck, when it isn't more, like the V-strut, cause the aileron cable goes through there to the upper wing. Now, my cable still worked, and I made an emergency landing. Since the lift was missing a bit on the left, it was flying with stick full right. But I made it. So, no: it isn't always automatically death to have midairs.

Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Okay, that must be the maximum compliment you could possibly get into scribbled lines as an Entente pilot, RAF_Louvert, so my kite and I take it as it is. The Albatros, when you really know it, is a quiet, unnervous, stabile-aiming fighter, that can take quite some hits; and if it can't do anything extraodinarily, it is more than good average in everything. Myself, I didn't have any unrecoverable stalls in the Dr.1 - I think it was Hasse Wind who wrote about such. -
Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
UnknownPilot: This thread is a good one that I keep checking on because it's about the plane itself (which has always been one of my favorites, although I'm more of an Albatros guy, just on looks. Hey - a man who loves my beloved Albatros, cannot be bad really - welcome again! Please tell, when you have OFF, cause then I'd like to add you to the OFF Pilots map. -
From it's introduction on, I thought this would be a craft for you. A "marine's craft" for the dirty ground attack jobs, rugged and stabile to chew a couple of bullets and spit them out again... I just shot down 3 Albatri with it in a campaign mission... ...but did you have to test it on my beloved Albatros??? (Whimper!)

Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, "correctly modelled" is a tricky word anyway here, as I assume, that there must be lots of values to get tuned in a way to get the specific character of a craft. And as you said: by changing one value, you might inflict another and change the whole flight model in an undesired way. So all I could beg for would be, that this unrecoverable stall and spin gets looked at and that attempts are made to get rid of it without spoiling the whole model. If that is not possible to change, we must live with it as it is. -
'Balloon Busting': Strategy Discussion
Olham replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
For balloon attack, I approach the balloon at 2.000 - 3.000 feet, zizagging first, and find out, how he is lined out, cause I always attack them along their full length axis, and if possible, from the sun side. From the right position, I dive on it in a 30° - 40° dive, stabilise my aim, and fire bursts at it, when it appears big enough. I mostly destroy it in the first approach. If that fails, I go back to 2.000 zigzagging, and then dive down on it much steeper (45 - 50 °), blow it up, and then pull out and away zig zagging, not climbing too hard, as that would reduce my escape speed. (I stop firing at the balloon at about 400 feet distance, latest, and pull out.) When out of reach of the balloon's Flak, I climb higher for crossing the line. -

Hey, Kingkat - what's the arms in your avatar from? I love white/black/yellow combined; surely would look good on a bird. -
Their Albatros have a black fuselage and tail, and a white band round the fuselage in front of the Cross. (Some have a white or yellow band round the cowling, behind the spinner). But you can check yourself; google for the freeware download of "DXTBmp" . After install, click on "browse" and go to the directory of the skins: (Your game folder) > campaigns > campaign data > skins Since there are more than 3.000 (!) skins made, I recommend to all to see them through!

Morris, I think Goering was addicted to more than one drug. There was morphine addiction (after a post war operation), and he looked much like an alcoholic to me. Last not least did he surely eat to much, too. Since I never met him, I can only judge him by photos and film. But I have a good knowledge of human nature. And I never saw a single picture that said to me: "You can trust the guy." But many of them said: "Danger! Keep away!"

Sorry, Paarma, but I'm not the WW1 buff, who has lots of books (better ask RAF_Louvert!). I really only have three about German WW1 aviation. - Ernst Udet: Mein Flieger leben - K. F. Kurt Jentsch: Beim Jagdflug tödlich verunglückt (still reading it) - Peter Kilduff: The Red Baron - Beyond the Legend and one is a booklet rather, but the one I recommend to you for pictures: - M. Schmeelke: Das Kriegstagebuch der Jasta 12 (written with the help, and photos of Viktor Schobinger!)* *The War Diary of Jasta 12

In the website "Frontflieger", you get a lot of data about the German pilots of WW1. I was especially touched by seeing (partly) very good photographies I hadn't seen before. http://www.frontflieger.de/2-jg1portrait.html

Olham replied to MK2's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Wonderful screenshots, everyone! And yes, it is the most wonderful WW1 air combat sim. All of you, who haven't tried it yet but do like the idea of flying and fighting in the early war birds - I highly recommend it to you. To all names new to me here: Compared to most other stuff one buys through the years, plays for short time and forgets about, "Over Flanders Fields" is like buying gold. Keeps it's value! But, MK2: ...it is NOT a game! -

Top 5 aircraft for next OFF installment
Olham replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Since the Albatros D I is much like the D II, but with far worse forward vision, I would recommend to you to change that into a Siemens Schuckert D III, Widowmaker. And for me one of those SPITFIRE beers! -
This is getting out of controll!... Candy Samples... "Brazil" was bizarre - you wouldn't believe, that Terry Giliam was NOT British! Great movie.

Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The Dr.1 in combination with the D VII - a deadly pack! In my American SPAD campaign, I found a sudden end, when I clashed with Jasta 18, the red-white ones. I had concentrated on the D VIIs, thinking they where the more dangerous ones. But then an ace came down vertical and got at my bum so well and so close, that I could only attempt a fast turn away. I tried to roll headover, to do a vertical dive, but the SPAD did too slow. No way could I escape that Dr.1 - he just shot me to pieces! -
Most efficient way of gaining altitude?
Olham replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Don't try to climb too steep. These aircraft have little power mostly. You need speed not to stall, and to keep up with your squad. So you must climb more patiently, in an angle of only 10 - 15 degrees. You will reach them after some time, be patient. Another good method is what I call the "staircase climb". You climb in steps like a drawn stair. Up a bit in about 25°, and then horizontal for a longer bit to re-gain speed enough for the next step. The vertical part not long, just until you loose energy. The horizontal bit long enough to get back to full speed. With that method, you can catch up with craft, that have a better climb but lesser speed than yours. -
Fokker D VI - Better than the Dr. 1 ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
British_eh: ...when stalled, (the Dr.1) would turn to the right, approximately 1 1/2 turns, floating almost, and easy recovery with a scant loss of altitude. That would have to be changed on our flight model, which is (or at least was before HitR) pretty bad there; some had unrecoverable stalls, which seemed to be unbelieveable for this aircraft, from all I had heard. -
That was exactly what I wanted to suggest to you, Siggi - great! Perhaps you could call it "Fallen Aces" (as there might be yet living ones too)? And will you also add the Americans, once they enter the war?
