On this day in aviation history...
Olham replied to Shiloh's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks for the reminder, Shiloh! I recommend McCudden's book "Flying Fury" to all who want to read also about the RFC before they entered the war. I like this recruiting poster. Can someone read and explain the wages? -
Mmuahahahahahaaaa!!!!!

Good point; for all who fly turn-fighters too! Lure an Albatros down to tree-top level, and you can sack him. Maybe you were a bit too greedy? Four Albatros...! Wait, when you come my way next time...!

Fifteenthousand post - you're right, Shiloh! And no warning point?! I guess I must let my "dark side" act out here more - Mmuahahahahaaaa!!!

I only throttle down anymore when a craft is slower than mine. When I fight a beast like the Brisfit, I fly full speed all the time, so I don't loose forward energy. Use other ways of curving; and most of all: use the vertical space as well. When the big Bristol comes in behind you, you could make a half-roll and pull the elevator. That way you get into the opposite course very quick. I doubt that the bigger craft could follow that so quick. You cause the biggest problem for an E/A, when you don't fly away from it, but towards it. Even if it's not an attack - you may only dive through under them. But they find it hard to follow, and also hard to shoot at you. Just put yourself into that position: an E/A always turns towards you, passing over or under your craft. It make me nervous, cause he always only gives me the shortest times possible to shoot at him. And important: don't fly away from them in the wrong moment - approach them, and only gain distance or height, when you leave their turn with an advantage. Like, when you cut into their left turn firing, then you leave the turn by just widening your own turn, so that you slip out of theirs. In such a moment you may also be able to regain some altitude. It took me a long time, until I realised how to handle the Bristol Fighter. And all my theory will only help a little - you'll have to try and find out.

Well, firstly, the Brisfit really was - after they decided to use it like a fighter - more than a match for German scouts and they could sure hold their own. I'm no flyer of the D.VII, but the Fokker should be at least as agile as the Albatros, I think. And when I fly the Albatros, the Brisfit can not get behind me, but I get behind them. But: attacking them from behind can be suicide! So my only working strategy is to fire long range deflection bursts to damage and hamper them. And only when they show effect, I go closer. Then I try to hit the rear gunner. Only when that is done successfully, you can safely "kill the beast". The Brisfit is the only E/A in OFF that often uses up all my ammunition for one single craft.

Alive and well, thank you, CaptSopwith. The quietness is shrieking loud and hopefully tells us, that they are still building and improving beautiful things. (I hope they haven't got lost in test-flying!) I guess we will all assemble here again more, when WOFF will be released. Good luck with all your exams! -
Great stuff everywhere! For WW1 aircraft models the WINGNUT WINGS customer model site is a great place to visit: http://www.wingnutwi.../customermodels

Albatros D.III (OeFFAG) graced Austrian Skies again
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I guess the camera is an electronic one that writes the pictures in lines; and the horizontal shaking makes, that the first (upper lines) are taken in a different position than the lower ones? Just my idea... -

I've just also found new videos for this craft - there are 5 parts, if you want to check them all. -

Albatros D.III (OeFAG) 253.24 with an original Austo-Daimler engine. Koloman Mayrhofer built this airworthy replica and presens photos of her first flight over the Austrian Mountains. There are many more photos in that thread. http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/replica-aircraft/58439-albatros-d-iii-oef-253-24-flying.html

Welcome over Flanders fields, MudWasp! Rural NY - can you specify that a bit better (in a PM if you prefer). Then I'll add your name to our OFF PILOTS MAPS. Put in data like time, altitude and location (you could even pick the longitude and lat. from the inflight map, if you want to go the safe way). and of course the aircraft type and number of craft you shot down. VERY IMPORTANT: avoid any semicolons - they will interrupt the report.

TVAL showing two (!) FOKKER D.VIII starting and flying
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Funny! That reminds me of an episode I have read. Was it at Jasta 5 or Jasta 17 - not sure. However; the officers were unhappy about the cows**t splashing against the undersides at starts. A French farmer used to drive his cows on their field quite often. So the mechanics started a nasty campaign against the beasts. They soaked a cloth with petroleum and stuffed it into the lead cow's bum (or so I remember it). The poor being ran away screaming, and the cows never came back to that field again. -

I'm no dev; just reporting. I use Windows 7 (32) and never had any problems with OFF or other sims. I guess it is just the right setup or not - I am lucky: I have a good friend who knows how to do that. -

Yep, nbryant, that's the destructive effect the Castor oil seems to have had on doped canvas. -
Yes, I think the fact, that America never had any of the 1. or 2. World War battles on it's own homegrounds made the Americans maybe even more paranoid about threats. As for sleepless nights, I guess each side made the other many of them. I liked to see the whole story well presented in the film "Thirteen Days" - only then I realised, how awfully close we had been to a nuclear war, when I had been sitting next to radio as a kid, who didn't understand much more of the threat but the alarming vibes in the speakers voices.

What is that - MMA events? -
I don't drink anymore, but here I am almost tempted to make an exception. A line from a song comes to mind: "The Russians love their children too..."
