Perfomance Issue
Lexx_Luthor replied to famine's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
EDIT **ack** below I'm on DX9 in SF-1, wrong forum sorry... Odd: I have 4850 (I'm sticking to it) and I re-install Win-7, and before I install teh Cat, I get great game fps and smoothness. Then install Cat 11.3something, but no matter what I do with that, SF loses framerate *and* is more jerky -- fps jumps far more reaching into lower values. So I go back to Cat 10.4, same thing. 10.3b, same thing. So I DELETE my ATI Cat drivers entirely, and I'm back fast and smooth. I think the basic ATI drivers in Windows is doing fine, but for some reason, the Cat and stuff are messing me up. Dunno. I'm going to go Cat-Free free for now. -
lol ... 45 --- P:: ^^ this Like, terrain slides around (that's very disturbing) and elevation pops or goes flat at varying distances? If so... P...okay, TE() is funny about Texture Tile Resolution (TTR) and Height Field Resolution (HFR) -- you know those two variables you setup when you go New Terrain. The ratio of these two variables is very important to TE(). Look at your TerrainEditor.ini config file for TileToHeightGridRatio = ... this variable MUST equal the TTR/HFR ratio you use when setting up New Terrain. TE ports this grid ratio over to your terrain's DATA file, and if its wrong, then map elevations do some funky things. If grid ratio is not equal to TTR/HFR, then to test if this is the problem, you can manually change the grid ratio in the Terrain_DATA file, then run the game. If that fixes things, just make sure to change the grid ratio in TerrainEditor.ini for this terrain. Every time you make New Terrain with a different TTR/HFR ratio, and you forget to tell TE.ini, then you get the funky terrain. -- On the other hand, the closest I've seen to P's y-flip is when I import a wrong size bmp *or* import with wrong tile size (don't know which), and the y scale goes negative. I've never seen a consisten y axis reversal if I recall.

How do u trim?
Lexx_Luthor replied to famine's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
I forgot how....Gr is it the Self and Key rates like this? [RangedControl001] AxisControl=PITCH_CONTROL MaxValue=1000.000000 MinValue=-1000.000000 DeadZone=24.000000 Saturation=165.000000 ReverseJoystick=TRUE MouseScale=1.000000 UseMouseRate=FALSE ReverseMouse=FALSE LimitValue=TRUE SelfCenterRate=0.000000 KeyControlRate=0.100000 AllowKeyControl=TRUE IncreaseControl=PITCH_DOWN DecreaseControl=PITCH_UP CenterControl= (...also do roll and yaw control if desired) ---- Panama:: That's a sad thing I always found cheesy since trim makes real life flying so much easier and, literally, lighter in effort. Don't forget, Oleg crippled trim in IL-2 for everybody because some online dogfight players were crying about trim cheats. That's the first indication I had that Oleg would eventually drop his ball. He did. There's something about combat flight TheSims develepors and trim. No wonder few souls play CF TheSims anymore....the devs offer "realistic" flight models but no trim. FAIL -
W,P:: CAUZ ya'll know why same reason, different reason Baltik that's some nice tips there. If you ever want a 3DEM sinusoidal projection of Iceland, lemme know. Its real easy especially for a small area like that, and 3dem allows max altitude of terrain to be set, allowing more elevation detail in TE(). I needed the Mt. Everest so I had to go from 0 to 8000m+. I was afraid to read your poast, knowing I would pickup a Free Tip that would force me to start over from scratch with my map. I swear I've started that over for the last time LOLOLOLZZ
-
Okay, that imported DEM, can you make a test map out of that, and see if it works? If so, then you may be fluffing the re-importing of the bmp. When you crop, do you change bmp size? I think TE() works best if map size in km equals image size in pixels. At least that's how I do it. Man where is Wrench the TE-Buster lol
-
Where do you get your bmps to start with? I went through this when I used 3dem to create my polar map sections, and TK gave a suggestion that I work with the colour palette. It worked. Exactly what I did...lol I can't recall the steps I took. Once I solve a problem, I forget the solution. That's me!!
-
What is "all hell breaks loose" mean? Is it terrain elevations not correct, or some arbitrary max altitude plateau is being created? I know you have to have the right colour palette set up, which gave me pains before I figured out how to do it. As for Y axis, make sure image size in pixels equals terrain size in kilometers, or weird things happen, or the hfd doesn't even get created. I dunno. Now that may not be a requirement, but its a rule I learned to follow: 1pxl = 1km

For motherboard, I'm gonno go with a Supermicro P67. SuperO has traditionally been among the highest qualitys board out there, although I talked to a local SuperO distributor today and he said the major common brands MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte, have caught up with SuperO in basic quality. But I ~love~ the retro green pcb look, very unique today, and normal spikey heat sink fins. I never got into the motherboard heat pipe theme. I had a SuperO board years ago before going AMD, and I want to go back. Since I'm going Sandy, I got my chance and I'm taking it. My ancient board (Pentium 133) even had a little US flag sticker on the pcb labeled Made In USA, although its not likely that flag is on their boards today though, and its not in any of those egg pics.

TMT -- Too Much Text how about.... (red Tsymbol followed by) NO TREADING VIOLATORS WILL BE PWND The best shirt I ever sawr, worn by a girl, was... Please Do Not Feed The Supermodels. Also, this old internets pic is now on T~shirts for a few years. I compliment everybody I see wearing it. On of my faves.

I've heard about this, but not so much in mainstream media (MSM): Chinese building mining operations in Afghanistan. For the Night of 18 July 2011:: I dunno. An idea I've seen before is a behind the scenes power finance shift, like London to NY after WW2, shifting bank debt creation to Asia and 2+billion untapped potential "credit" consumers. The manufacturing factories have already been relocated there, in an operation dwarfing the USSR moving factories beyond the Urals in late 1941. Maybe that's a good analogy.

If you want a great leg up, get the latest Upgrading and Repairing PCs by Scott Mueller. That 20th edition is not out yet though. At over 1000 pages, its waaay more detailed information than you'd ever need. Amazon is great but its also commonly found in major bookstores. Also poke around Scott's forum for good tips you can run with ~> http://forum.scottmueller.com/ Alternatively, Wikipedia also has good articles on types of parts (SATA/SAS for example, various DDR rams and stuff).

33rd Fighter Wing Gets First F-35
Lexx_Luthor replied to Dave's topic in Military and General Aviation
How many gun kills have there been since Vietnam? Butt, guns are always still a good idea, at least since cannon have become a less significant factor in load since the 1950s I suppose. --- daddyair:: Ceaser:: Bingo! You both missed. Its not about payload or current enemies. Streakeagle was talking about something entirely different (I think lol). He was comparing F-22/F-35 -vs- postmodern enemy like say PakFat-50 or whatever, against F-15/F-16 -vs- old modern enemies like MiGs-21 through -29. F-15 was the big cheese in fighters back in the 80s. F-22 is the big cheese in fighters today -- well I guess so from all the fuss about it. I don't follow postmodern military aviation. Thanks streak! I find it an angle I never considered, although its not a very important one in the long run, but its interesting. Going from F-15 to F-35 may certainly be a step up in terms of more recent uber tech and capability against postmodern enemies, and probably waaaay better than going UAV or even getting laid off. I'd wouldn't complain either. -
Sorry about that novel I wrote. In short -- if you build yourself, maybe start first with stock cpu cooler and its pre~applied thermal pad. Messing with non~stock coolers requires learning about applying thermal paste, and the pros and cons of dozens of brands. Keep things simple at first.

Go Regular. The recent years' giant strictly fan cooled cpu heat sinks perform the same as equivalently priced pre~manufactured water cooling, but then the strictly air coolers are HUGE. On the other hand, if you build your own water cooling setup, or buy a very expensive water setup, with titan size radiators with several FANS on top of your case, you wouldn't be thinking Athalon II anyways. There is NO WAY I will let *water* inside my computer case. Some things I don't do, and that's a big one right there. Also, I don't fully trust water pumps. In water coolers, you have not only radiator fans, but also pumps to pamper. In other words, water cooled setups are also air cooled, so its a bit more complex than the strictly air cooled coolers. Some like water as a hobby in itself. I only want decent cooling. For my next build, whenever that is, I'm planning on the Noctua NH-C14. I like top-down coolers like this more than the side blowing tower castles (my name for them). This C14 is one notch below the giants, but only one notch. One fan only needed. Two fans cool a bit better, and more importantly, would give redundancy to fan failure. Noctua makes good fans though, apparently. Surf the hardware review and forum sites. If you go Athalon II, you only need the stock AMD cooler. I know this very well. But, I don't overclock it, but I may try soon just for kicks. I do plan on playing with overclocking the i5k I'm planning to use, but that's down the road a bit. Surf the hardware forum and review sites. Good move waiting to research *PARTS* before you buy, even if you go pre~fab box. Take your time, there is so much stuff out there to learn first. It is a lot of fun **see below**, and you learn things you never knew about. Take your time, and learn. The hardware sites are where you want to be, but more than one. Also, surf the hardware review/forum sites. ** One thing I never expected was becoming familiar with all the high end cpu heat sinks out there, and there are dozens of them, while just weeks ago the lot of them totally befuddled me. You learn them all, or any part type, in the various reviews all over teh~internets. That's part of the fun of poking around to learn about parts before you build, or even just order pre~built. Take your time.

33rd Fighter Wing Gets First F-35
Lexx_Luthor replied to Dave's topic in Military and General Aviation
He said: "...kind of a step down..." Streak makes sense on a different level than you guys are talking. I think he meant, F-15 in the 1970s was the high end. F-22 in the 2010s is the high end. On the other hand, shux, F-15s and F-22s both would be the "lo" component if monsters like F-108s or F-12s, and their replacements, were Made, and were similarly updated over the dekades. -
If you do your own build again, you are thinking good out of the gate. For a low price build, get that Athalon II X4. Its smooth working. I have one, but only X2 dual core. Love it. For a higher price build, go with i5 2500K...(not the much more expensive i7 2600k). Do your research and see if you come up with similar idea. Okay, there are low priced budget Intel cpus out there, but I know nothing about them. I only know AMD, although my next build will be i5 2500k. The most confusing thing will be deciding on motherboard. So many out there, so many slightly different sub~variants.

Thank You! Computer 2 -- 829$ ... mmm... build your own. What kind of monitor do you have, and are you willing to move it over to the new build? Neither of those boxes comes with monitor. Possibly keep your case, keyboard, hard drives, DVD, possibly power supply but it may be too old and low power...6 years old? Power supply is the most important thing, like engine is the most important thing in airplanes. What Windows are you running now? I always suggest Win~7, but notice those two boxes comes with Win-7 "pre installed" and note that the software included does NOT state a full Windows installation disk. If so, that is unacceptable. A bit different than the usual hardware sites, is Scott Mueller's website. He's writes the Upgrading and Repairing PC's books, now on 19th edition. ~> http://forum.scottmueller.com/ One of the better normal hardware sites is [H] ~> http://hardforum.com/

Black Sea v.2.0
Lexx_Luthor replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
How about tile height map bmps, make a single pixel, with a good height, and that would be like a huge mound. Guns might sit on top of that, uh I think. I never really tested if ground objects can sit on top of the height map bmp dots. -
"Waterworld" Terrain
Lexx_Luthor replied to Wrench's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - File Announcements
If you can do this, you can entertain some wild ideas. One example: Recall the prehistoric story of one giant continent, and everything else one giant ocean. Gia maybe, or whatever its called. I know you can make 12,000 kilometer maps, cos that's what I work with. So if you can cut-paste your own bmps from other generated DEM, or iffin TK releaces NewTE someday where terrains are created as bmp files from scratch, or something like that, you can patch up a Jurassic Map or something. Or make a Cretaceous Campaign. I just know somebody would end up making brontosaurus lods or tgas. -
Yep, for games that first one is not even budget box. Skyviper, poast link to the offers so we can czech em out. or edit that rubbish into humoid readable format. That's the best thing you can do; slap together your own box, if you have the time to catch up on the hardware websites. Athalon II X4 is a great little quad chiplet, and you can't go wrong with it. I think the II series is the best low price cpu out there. I have the X2 dual core, 3.0Ghz. You need a good grafix card. Shop out parts for own box to see what it would cost, assuming you can use some of your current gear (keyboard, drives, monitor, etc...)
