Iranian Revolutionary Guards play with fire

Recommended Posts

Seems the iranians are out to get some metal pain their way, a flotilla of 5 gunboats having threatened via radio to attack three US Navy warships (Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Port Royal, Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Hopper and Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Ingraham) in the Strait of Hormuz...

Yes and in our world, a radio transmission like that and closing at high speed is considered "hostile intent" and with the proper ROE in effect usually leads to people being shot.

Quote from the article..."Ali Hosseini said that similar incidents had occurred in the past between Iranian and American ships, and the issues were resolved as soon as the ships recognized each otherIRNA reported."

We steamed at wartime steaming with full lookouts, not to mention radar, etc. The iranians were ID'd very quickly. And if they dont know their ship silhouettes and cant tell what that large ship bearing down on them is from more than 200 yards away, they need to get out of the water or we'll gladly help them out of the water. IRNA reports all lies, LIES I tell you!

Anyone know what type of gunboats the Iranians have that they can take on a Cruiser, Frigate and a Destoyer at the same time??

:blind:

the British sailors were in a rubber dinghy when they got caught btw - I can see why the Iranians had the upper hand in that one

Well I mean, gunboats , could be anything when its the news that says it. It could be Houdong missile boats carrying the C802. Get inside a formation, don't start the firing until you are inside. Thats if the shooting game hasn't started before you get inside.

Well a rubber dinghy blew a hole in the side of the USS Cole, and at the ranges they're talking about things like Harpoon aren't going to help any. Asymmetric warfare it's called.

I think I'd rather stick to my flight sim than take on the USN in a runabout.

They probably timed it with Bush's visit to the ME.

The following is from GlobalSecurity.org

Elaine Sciolino pointed out in her April 20, 1997, article in `The New York Times,' the potential for real conflict between the United States and Iran is significant, `when two enemy navies with vastly different military missions and governments that do not talk to each other are crowded into such a small, highly strategic body of water.' The acquisition by Iran of advanced cruise missiles, like the C-802 model, must be considered a serious threat to stability, given the explosive situation that already exists. Iran's intent seems clear: to challenge the United States for predominance in the Gulf.

Good video at CNN. No missile threat there, damn go fasts is all basically. Block 1B CIWS can handle that.

Good warnings too from the USN, sounds familiar.

After watching the video of the incident, I think the Navy did a fine job handling the situation. It is very clear the Iranians were trying to provoke the US Navy, by both their actions and their comment over the radio. The Navy did a outstanding job at keeping their cool and not poking the tiger. I really feel the Iranians wanted the US Navy to fire on them, this way they could play the victim card and kick off a situation that could very well spiral out of control. Score one for the squids.

Whoa, hadn't seen that movie yet... jeez... creepy just looking at how those gunboats circled the ships, like Piranhas... I wonder if the Navy will want to put some 25mm Bushmasters on the Oliver Hazard Perrys as well, just in case (the Ticonderoga and Arleigh Burke have them I think) - the single Vulcan Phalanx seems to be placed aptly for missile interception, and the OTO Melara and 50.cals don't seem to be the right tools for the job...

I know what they're capable of, just the way they're put on the Ol.Hazard Perry frigates makes me wonder if they'd be enough to protect it, and those crew-served Bushmaster mounts wouldn't look too bad on the frigates, which don't have much in terms of armor btw, so it could come in handy...

Edit: And I checked, the Oliver Hazard Perrys still only have 1 Vulcan Phalanx and 1 OTO Melara 76mm as surface guns - dunno what the .50 cals are for though, swatting flies?

Edit 2: *GHASP* Seems the Irans reverse-engineered the OTO Melara and are building some of their own?!? :swoon:

Why do you always refer to the OHP? You do know there was a Tico and and Arliegh Burke there also? What do you think it would be like on a speed boat with more than two 50 cals firing at you at the same time? Maybe 5? 6? 20MM CIWS?

I mostly refer to the OHP because it is also one of the most-used vessels to protect civilian shipping in convoys passing through there, not always do those convoys have the luxury of having destroyers and cruisers as part of the escort... and the OHP only carry about 4 x .50 cals, 1 Vulcan Phalanx and 1 OTO Melara 76mm... I bet the iranian navy can muster more speedboats as targets than just those 5 that arrived at the scene... and the US Navy not having opened fire on them before they got that close to them, the window of effective fire is very small, especially with an ambundance of targets, when it's the targets that have the element of surprise...

Bah, maybe all that's needed is just a second Operation Praying Mantis... :aggressive:

Oh well, seems that at least one OHP, USS Simpson (FFG-56, which also participated in Operation Praying Mantis), was retrofitted with two of the Mk 38 25mm Bushmaster cannons... :good:

I laugh at the Iranian navy for doing something so stupid! But I think that they want us to open fire on them so they can say that we attacked them in their waters! But in all reality those armed bass boats would just be target practice for our destroyers. BTW does Iran have any destroyers?

We have the best boating industry in the world, outfit each ship with 2 of the fastest speedboats and outfit each with Ma Duce's. Have them hidden on the deck but ready for a quick launch. Next time launch our armed speedboats off the ships and let them chase their (Iran's) speedboats. Give them a little surprise and turn the tables at the same time.

Negotiating in good faith with them is a waste of time. All they will ever respond to is superior force. In other words they're full of $h1t and "Le Puswas" at the same time.

Being ex-Navy, I'm proud the way the Nav handled it. Showed professionalism and intellect!

OMG!!!

Iran's now saying that the US faked the footage of the intercept/gunboats! Tsk Tsk Amerika! And to think I trusted you...:haha::rofl: I thought it was odd that Ernest Borgnine looked to be captaining one of the Iranian boats...
