That doesnt surprise me. Just last month Iwas flying in to addison airport dallas texas and the air traffic controller that day must have had an eye patch on or something.He first gave me clearence to take off when i was #4 in line and a whil later usher me in for a landing with one plane bearly turning on to the taxiway after landing and another bearly starting its takeoff run. It almost turned out the way the movie did had I not decided to go around on my own. About two minutes later a women airtraffic controller relieved him of his post. I dont understand however how the pilot of the plane on top did not see the plane on the ground before slaming into him. Prop planes even the trubo ones dont realy go all that fast and the plane on the ground was read for peats sake.

You know, it was probably the exact same air traffic controller on duty for that crash.

Actually, this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened with light aircraft (or heavy for that matter).

 

Take a look at the configuration of both aircraft...notice anything interesting in their wing configuration?

 

Yep, both aircraft have giant blind spots facing the other aircraft.

 

The exact same scenario happened a few years ago in the air. You guessed it...the high wing aircraft was the bottom and the low wing aircraft was on top and never saw each other.

 

I could see it happening.

I never take a runway with another inbound unless I'm given permission to take off. I will never land, or be on final approach with another aircraft on the runway. When I'm given permission to land, or takeoff, the runway is mine and mine alone.

 

I can't count the times that I've landed and been asked to expedite Alpha1 taxiway to assist another plane on approach. Nope....I generally piss everyone off and putz on down to the last taxiway. My runway is my runway.

 

I wonder if he logged that landing in his flight log?

The understaffed air traffic controllers and over burdened air traffic network thank you for your cooperation.

 

I believe an incident like this happened at an uncontrolled airfield in Florida a few years back, another case of low wing on high wing due to the blindspots. Thankfully, the only time I was cleared to land on top of a guy during a busy day at KDAB, I was flying a high wing and made a go around. That was the other pilot's fault though, he took the runway after hearing hold short, must've heard position and hold.

This was an un towered airport. Which means pilots anounce themselves and thier intentions, can be very confusing on a busy day.

When I was 12 back in 1969, my brother and I were at a neighborhood gas station in Tucson near the local airport getting the tires in our bikes aired up when two planes passed overhead. I watched as they got closer to each other, one above the other, when they disappeared from view. A couple seconds later we heard a rending crash so off we go to the airport a couple blocks away. The lower high wing cessna was slightly ahead of the low wing piper I think it was; they never knew the other was there till the crash. They both survived with one guy having his back broke I think. Man, feathers and parts were everywhere.

 

A few years ago in So.Cal. near San Diego, a Ca. Dept. of Forestry OV-10 spotter was coming in unseen by the big 4 engine DC-8 (I think it was) tanker. They nearly landed in the local neighborhood Kmart. All 3 crewmembers were killed in that one. Sad day...

 

It do happen.
