Olham 164 Posted August 5, 2009 Yesterday, I got a message saying, the server could not be found or connected to. I had this message from morning to midnight - no forum. Did anyone else have the same to happen?

Olham 164 Posted August 5, 2009 Haha, you are right there, Wels, it's an addiction to meet all the pilots here, isn't it? Thanks all - now I know it wasn't my own mistake.
Olham 164 Posted August 5, 2009 Hmm - the only Gremlin I know is "Gremlin", who is a "good Gremlin" (Lol!) We live in strange times, indeed - birds flue, pig flue, internet viruses, Gremlins... Anyone ever saw the old trickfilm "Gremlins in the Kremlin" by Disney - a wartime short film?
Olham 164 Posted August 5, 2009 Thanks, Unc, that was really well explained.

Fortiesboy 3 Posted August 5, 2009 Because it was my homepage, I thought I had a big problem, my end. Was this a planned shutdown or what, do we know ?
Rickitycrate 10 Posted August 5, 2009 I wonder if we should have a back-up site to go to so we can communicate with each other? Just in cases like this. Hey you never know. I get frazzled when this happens and need to talk to someone asap, hehe. Now I hit the streets looking for familiar names in some of the few forums I belong to. Fortiesboy 3 Posted August 5, 2009 Please to read Post #7 of this very thread I read it Unc. But the vernacular is known very clearly to you, but not necessarily is it definite nor unequivocal to everyone else. An official statement saying what had happened would have been helpful. +Erik 1,812 Posted August 5, 2009 Well I wish I could tell you all it was some kind of huge drama but it wasn't. I've been prepping our equipment for a new release of forum software. Most of that includes upgrading services and some behind the scenes wheels and cogs that makes everything here work. The reality is that we never officially went down. The root domain http://www.combatace.com always worked but once you ventured past that to a dynamically named portion of the site like http://forum.combatace.com the page not found error was occurring. Dave alerted me at 7:04 AM my time there was a problem. Finding the problem took about 4 minutes once I was able to get to a machine I could work from. Fixing the problem took about an hour to rebuild bind (DNS Daemon) and resync the database. Officially named portions of the site came back online at about 3:10 PM my time. Total loss of connected and dynamically named portions of the site, 8 hours. All of that because I typo'ed (dropped the "e" from combatace) while compiling. Feel free to take me out back to the wood pile. I probably deserve it. E
Barkhorn1x 14 Posted August 5, 2009 Finding the problem took about 4 minutes once I was able to get to a machine I could work from. All of that because I typo'ed (dropped the "e" from combatace) while compiling. E Actually, those errors happen all the time and 4 minutes to identify the problem is damn good. I was involved with a new program compiliation once upon a time and it took literally 4 freakin' hours for a tech to discover that the server addy had a typo - and that was causing the compilation failure. Keep in mind that most of those 4 hours were spent checking hardware/middleware/cableing - just about every damn thing except the bleeding obvious. Lessions were learned the hard way that day!
+daddyairplanes 10,234 Posted August 5, 2009 well i was originally mad at the internet company here. given the quality of service(it ain't time warner cable) i think i'll stay mad at them. appreciate the explaination
Olham 164 Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Hey, Eric - only human, eyh? As long as it wasn't a hacker attack, everybody will be okay. Edited August 5, 2009 by Olham
JimAttrill 24 Posted August 5, 2009 I was also worried it was a hacker attack and am happy that it is all now working. It is only when it doesn't work that you realise how much it means. Flying OFF is great, but reading about it adds to the experience. The nearest I can come to explaining this is that I often go to the Kruger National Park, but never on my own. When I see the (occasional) car with one occupant I always think that it must be so lonely to see an animal and not be able to share it with a companion. At least here you can say 'whoopee I shot down [x whatevers] yesterday!' (or the opposite which often happens). Happy flying, guys

Olham 164 Posted August 6, 2009 Yes, good idea, Gremlin, we should meet in your Wings of Honour forum, when there is a "blackout" again. I would be a guest there more often, but find, I'm already pretty occupied with this one forum.
Bullethead 12 Posted August 6, 2009 Feel free to take me out back to the wood pile. I probably deserve it. Don't feel bad--a great many websites went down early this week and late last week, even Wikipedia. I put it down to the unannounced change Microsoft put out late last week that impacted a lot of things.
