OT: Attention Fantasy RPG Fans

Recommended Posts

Thanks Olham (It's a little bit too gung-ho for my tastes)...but I just made it for the young 'un as he likes it

Well, I like it. Never heard it before but I've been jamming to it a lot since you pointed it out. Now you need to do another vid with Man O'War's "The Crown and the Ring", which puts a bayonet into a similar spiritual ganglion

BTW, cool Franzetta "Deathdealer" poses, too :drinks:

I wish I was taking videos. I just killed a dragon and 1) got the epic 3rd person slo-mo view where I jumped on its neck and rode it like a bull for a while before plunging my Skyforge Steel Sword (Superior) into the top of its skull, and 2) as the smoke cleared, there was Talscar the Wanderer, bard by trade, standing next to the wreckage, praising me for my feat, and singing "The Dragonborn Comes". So I'm now officially a figure of legend  . But it would have made a great video.

This damn dragon flew all over the place. My heart goes out to the patrol guards who fell to it's wrath.

I'll watch that for sure when I get broadband again, perhaps next year sometime. Long story....

Just now, I was wandering around at night and a dragon appeared. I was in the wilderness but it was densely populated with various nasty critters so the dragon was raining its frosty death down on them all as it circled around above me. It being dark, I couldnn't see the dragon itself very well except for when it was shouting. As it happened, I was close up against the bottom of a cliff that marked the saddle between 2 mountains, so as the dragon circled me, it crossed the ridgeline after about 270^ of its 1st circle. It went out of sight behind the top of the cliff but from that direction there sounded a series of the most horrendous roars you ever heard. Not the rather shrill shrieks of the dragon but some basso bellowing that shook the earth itself. This was accompanied by a huge number of bright white flashes, the tops of which were visible above the ridgeline, and all of which looked the same as when the dragon was breathing frost on my side of the ridge. This all continued for about 15 seconds as I tried to find a way up the cliff. But at that point, the red dot on my compass marking the dragon, and the "dragon" health bar under the compass (which was nearly full), both disappeared. When they went, the lights and noise also stopped.

Needless to say, I made a note to myself NEVER to bother whatever was on the other side of that ridge

Thanks. Be sure to video all your dragon fights in case you get that same "bull-riding" death scene. Your guy is dressed better for it than my guy. I think elvin armor looks rather lame but us light armor types must wear it....

This was all just a random thing. The dragon was just one of those that shows up periodically and I'd met that bard before. He wanders around Skyrim hoping to see epic fights so he can write songs about them. He just happened to be in the neighborhood.

The fight itself was pretty chaotic because the dragon had many targets in the neighborhood so didn't circle often but mostly zig-zagged along a more or less linear path. It was night and I was in hot pursuit, looking up trying to get a clear shot through the trees, so wasn't watching where I was going. Thus, I was forever running into treestumps, falling off cliffs, and tripping over campfire equipment. The whole countryside was awake and pissed off, so I was frequently beset by angry beasts during my chase. Several groups of bandits were particularly mad at me for kicking over their tea kettles. Each time I had to fight them, the dragon would pull away and in my haste to catch up again I left many unlooted bodies where they fell, without hope of finding them again. Between the dragon's strafing and my slashing through whatever stood between us, we created an impressive swath of devastation stretching from just south of Riverwood nearly to the west end of Lake Ilinalta.

Here's what old Snotr One-Eye (and his packmule Lydia) look like these days. I made all my own armor and also improved all gear shown here to (Superior).

I so need to buy a house. I'm getting loaded down with heavy junk that I don't use every day but don't want to sell, either. Problem is, Skyrim's economy sucks due to the civil war and dragon invasion, so there's a credit crunch. I just can't find any bankers willing to write me a mortgage so there's no alternative but cash up front, and I just don't have that kind of money.

BTW, I stumbled into a quest rather like that movie "The Hangover", where you try to figure out what the Hell happened to you the night before :good:

I thought it was a rather quaint cottage.

It has some advantages. Two chests for storing your looted goodies until either disenchantment or sale. A shield display over the bed in the master bedroom for hanging some dead guys fancy shield on, a sword rack near the entrance to the master bedroom for putting some dead guys sword on. Two working bookshelves, for those of us that like to collect occult tomes. A weapon rack near the front door that I use like an umbrella stand when I come home after a long hard days adventuring. A cooking pot for preparing the venison and clam stew etc. And last but not least, a nice alchemy station for mixing up the potpourri.

I also installed the wife, who opened up her own shop from the house, she gives me a share of the profits, and regularly has around 750 to 1000 gold to barter, and it is next door to the smithy, and across the road from the hunters emporium. All in all a pretty good country home.

I have been trying to gather enough money to buy a house in Solitude, thinking I should move up to the city for a while, that place costs 25 000, and that is without any decorating...it has been a slow process, but I have saved 13 000 so far. Admittedly, I have been into a lot of tombs lately.

I bought a house for my first character, however I decided to just travel light for my Wood Elf Archer. I'll probably get one eventually though. Have to settle down at some point, right?

Well, I guess I failed my first real "escort" style quest. I got a quest to escort a pilgrim guy to the Evergleam. We made it almost all of the way there when the sound of the dragon roar filled the night sky. From out of nowhere it seemed the giant beast landed a scant few feet from me, kicking up a cloud of dust and shaking the very ground under my feet. Almost before I could react by getting my bearings and drawing the bowstring back, the pilgram charged the dragon bare handed! The mighty beast responded by unleashing a blizzard like spray of frost directly at the unarmed pilgram. Still the man did not let up, despite the withering frost, and continued his screaming charge - right into the dragons jaws. I reared it's head up high above us all, framed in the moonlight, then struck downward with open jaws and clenched firmly down on the head and upper torso of the pilgram. The was nothing I could do to save him, for even as I launched volley after volley of arrows into the great beast, it shook it's head relentlessly - no doubt tearing the man to shreds - and then flung him like a ragdoll at least a hundred feet away. Though in time we took down the dragon, the pilgram had met his end. Sadly, we were but 50 yards from the entrance to Evergleam. Faith is no substitute for common sense pilgrams!

Here's a video of one of my dragon kills (with one of those fancy kill moves at the end):

Plus a little 'extra' after the end.

At the moment I'm saving up for a house in Solitude, costs a 'ruddy fortune!

Crypt Shooting Gallery! Did I win a prize?

Hellshade

Wow... Hellshade.. you suck!!

I'm now totally addicted to this game! It's by far the most beautiful, emmense, graphically pleasing game I have ever played on a computer ... period!! Being a very old D&D player from when I was 10-13 (I'm 42 very soon), I longed for a RPG game that was not complicated to get into (nothing like the Ultima games from C-64 days), and fun to play! Man-o-man did I strike it rich with this one! I can't get over the graphics inside and out. The caves are incredible, the traps, the enemies you randomly run into...all the undead, all of it. It's like something right out of the TSR's Dungeon Master's handbook. All fluid and random, nothing is scripted. I can't get over this game.

I'm a huge FPS game fan and I love all the WWII/COD games, but everything is totally scripted. There is a definate flow you have to follow, otherwise the game waits for you... but this... wow.. like nothing I have ever seen/played before. The waterfalls, the trees, the paths you walk along ... all amazing. I like to just walk through it, like I do when I go for nature walks around Long Island. The autum scenery is breathtaking. My wife (the anti-gamer) was even shocked when she looked over my shoulder to see what I was playing. Then I told her, watch this... I can actually run to that moutain in the distance. Of course as I was doing this.. .I ran into a horde of frost-spiders and she ran away in fear as she hates spiders... and in Skyrim, they look f'n real close-up.

At any rate... thanks a million for posting this game. Without you mentioning it, I never would have known about it!

My character 'Conan' ... as we all seem to reflect all of our inner selves when we create them ...

Lvl 11 Nord Fighter/Mage.... built like a tank, bash everything, harldy use magic other than enchanted weapons. By companion is a woman, I forget her name, Leyla, or something. She was 'awarded' to me by the Jarl of Solitude. Smokin' hot, full gear, built like an Amazon, and kicks-a$$ like one too. Maybe I'll have my character marry her in the end... seems fitting. We've been through a lot, and hopefully she stays the whole game. It's a lot of fun. We recently fought a Dragon on top of mountain... it was pretty intense. The bastard kept straffing us with fire, back and forth and would not land. When it did, we both beat the crap out of it.

Even the look and sight of the Dragons are intense in this game. They obviously took the needed time to model everything correctly by movement, and shape. When one flies over-head, it gives you the feeling of being totally helpless, waiting for it to breath fire, or ice. It's amazing how it's body twists and snakes around with it's long spiked tail, and serpent body, so fluid and life-like. It's almost impossible to shoot one when it's flying. I read that an etire team of developers was dedicated soley to making the Dragons in Skyrim. And it shows. I hate killing them... but it's my job.. nothing personal. LOL!

All the best and lost in Skyrim!

Damn - another one who seems to say, the price is justified....

Oh, but it is.

I don't think it's the second coming of Christ, but surely it's a good game. And really justifies the price.

I've been in the first dungeon, and it was really nice. If what they say it's true, that this is not like in DA2, a copy and paste style dungeons, then I can't wait to see more.

Only the UI, is still making me crazy after 6 hours of playing. Even my mouse, sometimes, seems to give up, and have to restart the game again. And not being able to redefine all the keys properly, it's unbelievable. :deadhorse:

I wonder what they will do with next week patch. But I think they won't touch much on UI, unfortunately.

Anyway it's worth the price , Olham.

I agree. I can't say that with many games, certainly not with any of the CoD MW series (biased I know, but those games are beyond anything realistic).... but this one is definately worth the pocket coin. It's so damn random that you simply become part of the game. You have no idea what is going to happen next, there is no time limit on completing tasks. Which means you can be offered a job, and put it aside to do some personal exploring, then come back to it.

The whole game basis is completely wide open. There are no rules, and nothing stopping you from doing what you want. Sure it's not the 2nd coming of Christ, but for gamers, this one is what we've been waiting for. Plus, the game is never the same twice. Even if you die, and come back to the same point, it's different.

Now, if they could incorporate this graphical engine/game style into a FPS WWII game... that would be awesome! Slogging through France on foot with the 1st Inf, just going from town to town... no boundries, missions to complete, but totally unscripted... etc. Wow... that would be ultimate. :)

I'm in, too, but I'm afraid I will have to rob a bank first in order to afford the game and the needed computer upgrade to go with it.

I too am an old pen and paper D&D guy and having just turned 43 a few months ago, I was probably playing about the same time you were back in the day. I agree that this beautifully rendered, few restrictions, open world concept is exactly the type of fantasy RPG game I have been waiting for my whole life. Only now do they have the technology, skill and artistry to bring it to life like this!

As for the game never being the same twice, it may be more true than you realize. I started a second character and made him a pure stealth / archer type. No magic at all other than alchemy potions to brew poisons with and enchanting to augment my gear. At any rate, when I went through some of the quests for the second time (such as to find a particular NPCs helmet), I went to where I found it the first time and it wasn't there. I thought "Must be a game glitch, oh well" and didn't think any more about it. Then a few hours later I found the helmet in an entirely different dungeon! The Radiant Story AI has the ability to change where quest items are for any of the non-main quests. It can change who gives you a quest, what they want and where it ends up being held at, so it's literally never the same game twice where you can memorize where all of the stuff always is. That surely adds greatly to the replayability since it keeps the "exploring" aspect of the game fresh.

"Money well spent" would be an understatment, in my opinion. Let's just say it takes the edge off waiting for P4. Yes, I still want P4 like mad, but with Skyrim, the hours just tick by without me hardly noticing them.

Simply put. If you enjoy RPGs, and/or games with great story and storyline delivery, then this is a MUST HAVE. The graphics, well, I almost feel bad calling them graphics. Better put, it's an amazing 'visual' experience. (kinda like OFF with its stunning atmosphere up in the clounds)

I have taken FULL advantage of the last 3 days before the holliday weekend to explore and adventure. Great fun! I'm hopping it keeps me distracted for at least another 6-12months. It would be nice to turn around and say "oh hey look, p4 is comming out". :bye: I have a feeling that 2012 is going to be a very 'unproductive' year for me. hehe
