Planet Nine: A New Addition to the Solar System?

Recommended Posts

Just found out about this. Some scientist are proposing a possible new planet in our solar system.

I have not had time to read the scientific article yet in detail yet.

Discover Magazine Article: Planet Nine: A New Addition to the Solar System?

The published source article titled "Evidence For A Distant Giant Planet In The Solar System" from The Astronomical Journal, Volume 151, Number 2.

haven't they been postulating Jovian-size (or at least Neptunian sized) bodies in the Oort cloud for some time???

be nice if they actually FIND something substantial

Triffids... wait, wrong movie

being able to detect anything in Oort cloud is still pretty impressive achievement

because us fancy Europeans and our astronomical science circles frowns at that odd sole chunk of rock discovered by these who opposed The Crown...

Its hard to believe that it has been there all along and we have not been able to see it or detect it before now.!!!!!

given I am advanced noob in astronomy I'd say it's because 1) too far away for radio/telescopes type A and 2) too close for radio/telescopes type B

I think the only way they've been able to "detect" it is by the gravitational effect on other bodies.  So not really seen yet - just calculated to be there.

It will be interesting to fly a probe out there to actually look at it.  Some decades in the future.......

yes it was gravitational oddities, but not really suprised as the idea was there for decades

as for photography other than radar measurements I am not sure if there will be enough light that many AU away
