Strike Fighters 2 : Operation Desert Storm Redux

Now a short revisit to one of the seminal Mods for the Strike Fighters series.

Strike Fighters 2: ODS Redux is a very impressive modification of the basic game series and included new aircraft / ground objects over the original.

As the title suggests the mod will have you flying over the Middle East battleground where Operation Desert Storm was actually set, so mostly Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait of course:

New aircraft for Redux included the amazing Buccaneer by Ravenclaw:

Install
As ever the mod works best at the game version it was tested and built for, and if you install onto a later version or one merged with North Atlantic there will be a bit more work to do. However if you can copy & paste files and edit word documents you shouldn’t have any problems.

The instructions are pretty good – however you must insure you follow the first and second rules of modding:
1.    Make sure you stick the files in the correct place!
2.    Make sure you stick the files in the correct place!

If you get stuck there is a few years worth of information and a knowledge base on here to help.

Gameplay
The variety of aircraft you can choose along with the different squadrons is vast as you can imagine, and should be historically accurate. For this I am going to be in VFA-81, - that’s right I can literally walk into any Navy squadron I am that good!
img00007.thumb.JPG.9c929f29f75f82c88469b7c53b3ea4d8.JPG

The campaign starts with a bit of background about the situation and the strategic error Saddam Hussain perhaps may have made:
img00008.thumb.JPG.57c910203ff17072b92edcd101e4c3c2.JPG

For day one I can rejoice in the fact that mod campaigns include targets other than the beeping Comms building!
img00009.thumb.JPG.12924792f9f0898ef4be87543b746dcb.JPG

Default loadout looks good enough so no changes for me:
img00010.thumb.JPG.b6d05d74b637ad138d4c9c1ca99f6044.JPG

And flying with my good buddy Ens Mike Erwin, who is not the highest in flying skill but is good with the ladies!:
img00011.thumb.JPG.334b7e48019eb64e0a864a0c1ebfbc26.JPG

Into the sky we go, the Hornet is a third party mod but includes a very good pit complete enough for us to get by with navigation etc:
img00013.thumb.JPG.5102d0a4bb1024bc28c92964d10d232e.JPG

Flying over Kuwait Mike seems to think keeping his lights on is more challenging!
img00016.thumb.JPG.4fd6b6abe51dd7be4f234495858d44bb.JPG

Plenty of Bandits are being called out, like this MiG-23:
img00015.thumb.JPG.a65711250364fe97a3ebd3c9cdf39694.JPG

They are being kept busy by F-14s on the way in though luckily:
img00014.thumb.JPG.d49b1ff0ff0bc0d3b84eac5921443329.JPG

We find and hit the scud rather easily, although Mike doesn’t think it is fun without flying low and getting shot at by every gun in theatre:

img00019.thumb.JPG.82f32f053ab076f48eb8e1e674f97e59.JPG

Coming off target, a MiG is within 10 miles at 9 o’clock, so I turn and lock it up.
img00021.thumb.JPG.baa8510ae22ccb83558f516dad15a826.JPG

Not being certain who or what it is I close to visual just to see a cheeky F-14 blast it out of the sky with guns (that's the guy locked in the circle).
img00023.thumb.JPG.1e45a2a18a267fe23e8782f264aa7660.JPG

Typical, I am off to the tanker, or Alt + N as it is more commonly known here:
img00025.thumb.JPG.558975029baf5bbdd2592a320fa3957c.JPG

Success is ours…in your face Saddam!

img00026.thumb.JPG.a06e6529565d422de6b8453388da0800.JPG

And of course, hats off to the many that contributed to make SF2:ODS possible!

One of the greatest mods, first time I played it, it was a version for the old Wings Over Europe.

My only gripe with it is that the terrain is pretty wrong, for target locations etc. The one I made is identical in dimensions (portrays the same area), but addresses such issues and was also built for ODS. I wonder if people are still interested in playing ODS; when I get the chance, I might rework the campaign files and provide a more accurate campaign.

This is a great mod to integrate 'what if' or 'what could have been' aircraft into and see how they fair! RAF F-4JUK (this is the interceptor the RAF wanted to deploy but politically the Tornado ADV got the job), RNZAF A-4K flying in a joint Skyhawk Wing with the Kuwaiti's (this option was actully pushed in preference to the USMC mercs that ended up providing ground support for the Kuwaiti's but the NZ government faltered ),  TSR-2, F-111D, F-111K even an extended service Vulcan with Falklands war ordanance/ ECM mods etc

Personally yes,

I'm currently play ODS  with the VFA-81,an upgrade are more than welcome!

Also,I played some different Service/planes since joined the community, and I think that in the strike missions, more ABA type will be incremented:for example,I didn't run a single base attack with the Brit Tornado, and we know that the reality was quite different...

You should just need to change the loadout.ini file for the aircraft.

Still playing the SF2 version!  Please tinker with it, and would love a 2003+ version.  The + being for the MiGs & Sukhois & Mils that should have (futilely) sortied into the jaws of the almighty Grumman F-14 Tomcat!

      Notes about the installer
Beware, the mod is available only in the ISO format. You can either mount it on a virtual drive, burn it on a DVD like in the good old days, or unzip it with 7-Zip or equivalent software.
The installer will automatically detect your installation of the required Strike Fighters 2 games by reading through the registry keys. Game folders that are copied from or manually moved from where they were originally installed are not supported. You need all three aforementioned Strike Fighters 2 games and they must be installed with ThirdWire's original installers, not manually copied from other sources nor moved elsewhere after installation to other folders or drives. If you do not meet any of these requirements, installation cannot proceed and you are on your own. If you install all required games properly, the installation of the mod will proceed correctly as intended. The installer then lets you choose where to install the mod folder; you can even install the mod on a different drive or partition than the one where Strike Fighters 2 is installed. No further user input nor manual edits after installation are ever required; the installer takes care of creating all proper links to your desired path for the mod folder. After installation is over, simply run the mod by using the created Desktop and/or Start Menu links.
If you have a previous version of the mod installed, please use the uninstaller to remove it completely. Clean installation is mandatory. You might want to make a backup of the Controls folder, so that you can easily restore your controller settings afterwards.

      Suggestions on common issues
Make sure that you are using your dedicated GPU. By default, Strike Fighters 2 usually selects the integrated GPU you may have on your CPU, which is much weaker in terms of VRAM. In case you have frequent crashes or black/missing textures, I highly suggest you download and install the DXVK graphics wrapper (x86 DLLs) into your Strike Fighters 2 game folder: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk. You need a Vulkan-compatible GPU. The wrapper can greatly improve the experience with the mod. With DXVK I can play the mod on a mere Intel UHD 710, whereas without it the mod would always crash to desktop. Go to Sound and set Sound Channels to 32. We got reports that 16 is not enough and will cause crashes on some systems, due to the higher quality sounds included within the mod. The mod is pretty heavy for the game engine despite huge optimizations. Strike Fighters 2's engine is 32bit only and apparently does not manage VRAM properly; consecutive campaign missions might show black/missing textures on objects or cause crashes to desktop because the game does not release the occupied VRAM from the previous mission you played, thus the more missions are loaded consecutively, the more easily you may run out of memory. Set Ground Objects to Medium or Low, Horizon Distance to Near, and Shadows to Medium or Low. These are the most troubling settings. Avoid Unlimited settings as much as possible. If the mod used to work and suddenly crashes to desktop, updating or reinstalling video drivers should help. Make sure that DirectX June 2010 Redistributables are also installed, they are included inside the ISO disk image of the mod. Inside the mod folder, you'll find some extra text files. "(Coalition Order of Battle)" should be of your interest; the mod's terrain covers the entirety of Iraq, at the cost of not having all of Saudi Arabia; this means that a number of important units are based on airbases that are beyond the in-game playable area. With those units you always spawn near the target area, you'll never get to start from a runway nor to land on the assigned runway beyond the invisible wall. You have an entire list of the affected units in the aforementioned text file. By pressing ALT+N, the plane returns to base automatically. The mod is fully compatible with the Campaign Customizer and Mission Editor DLCs by ThirdWire. The Campaign Customizer might be an alternative way to experience those off map units I mentioned previously, since it assigns you to a random airbase of the in-game flyable area. Escort missions are often broken, this is not an issue of the mod, but a bug of the stock game; sometimes the AI flight you escort does not engage its target and keeps flying in a straight line instead of following waypoints, thus the trigger for mission success will never happen. Abandon the mission or retry it if the issue happens, sometimes it works. Pray for ThirdWire AKA Tsuyoshi Kawahito to work on a 64bit version of Strike Fighters 2, maybe even with support for DirectX 12. With that done, any out of memory issues should become an old memory. SF2 E\F-111A\E\F Aardvark & Raven ODS30 Squadrons
      -------------------------------------------------------------
This pack contains the stand-alone version of the E\F-111A\E\F Aardvark & Raven aircrafts from "Operation Desert Storm: 30th Anniversary". This mod contains accurate ODS livery, nose art and serial numbers from ODS. This is just a sample of what you will find in the expansive "Operation Desert Storm: 30th Anniversary" pack. If you like this mod and want (much much) more! Please check out the "Operation Desert Storm: 30th Anniversary" mod here...

!! DO NOT INSTALL THIS MOD into the "Operation Desert Storm: 30th Anniversary" pack. That pack already has these aircrafts, customized for the ODS30 theater!

      * Included Jets:
      EF-111A Raven
      F-111E Aardvark
      F-111F Aardvark
      -------------------------------------------------------------
      Installation:
      -------------------------------------------------------------
      1) Copy the contents of the "To_Mod_Folder" folder into your mod folder and over-write if required.
      2) Update your "...\Flight\SOUNDLIST.INI" with the contents of the "Add F111 SoundList.txt". Please don't forget to maintain the number sequence in the sound list.
      3) Check, ensure (or update) all the squadrons in this pack is in your "SQUADRONLIST.INI" file. Once you look at that file, you will know what to do.
      * Please note that some squadrons may have multiple CO planes, this is not a mistake. Rather than just picking one CO, I am respresenting all the COs for that squardon during the period. So both COs could pop up in given scenario. I rather have them than cut them so...it's only a game...
      * Tweaked and Tested by the ODS30 team!
      * Mod Direction and Optimization - Menrva
      * Additional Data and Weapons improvements - Yakarov79.
      * Additional Sound tweaks and updates - Guuruu.
      * Accurate Skins and Decals - Viper63a
      * Added JosefK's "0.9 OPEN BETA FOR F-111 CCIP" Mod to F-111E & F.
      Thanks and Enjoy!
